I'm currently listening to the 6/9/77 Help->Slipknot!->Franklins which, if you haven't heard it, is the absolute best there is out there (IMO, I guess...but really, it's hands down the best)

Why does the dead have to be associated with Phish? They are not even remotely similar, besides their affinity for improvisation. Phish, as much as I like their instrumentals, has stupid lyrics that don't make sense. The Grateful Dead is divine poetry set to the most dynamic jams in modern history. One is merely a very good band. The other is the greatest band that has ever played and ever will play.

Obviously bigdaddytmac didn't realize that there was a follow up post from the creator of this thread asking what other stuff we like and listen to. Furthermore, a ton of people that like the GD also like Phish. There is your association. Quit being a hater. GD and Phish are completely different bands as you stated, your the only one whose putting them in the same cart.

the dead and phish are obviously very different beasts to anyone remotely familiar with their music. however, it is pretty much inevitable that a dead discussion will at some point lead to phish. and vice versa. when phish began their career (circa 83) there were very few bands, other than the dead, that were playing even remotely similar music- jazzy rock and roll with an emphasis on improvisation. the two bands music sounds quite different, but idealogically, its very similar. then, to cement the connection, in the fall of 95, when jerry garcia died, all the dead heads went on phish tour, thus making the passing of the torch official. that being said, they are both sick bands.
