shhhhh... damn it, why you gotta tell all of NS? Job Market is already tough enough. Don't bother, this will be mine.

year and a half til i have my degree and i'll be all over jobs like this, i've been seeing a lot more open up so i'm pretty stoked.

I'm going to give you some advice about applying for jobs... let THEM tell you YOU aren't qualified. Don't tell yourself that. Make yourself look awesome. Honestly, most art directors don't give a shit about whether you have a degree (though it helps), they care about your book and what you've done.

I was offered a design position as a junior designer / prod artist at a large action sports company before I had even set foot in a college classroom, (/subtleclaim) but case in point. They had similar requirements.

I don't know lol, you are right but to an extent because it does matter at least somewhat. Every design/marketing/etc job i've seen lately in the ski industry requires at least an Associate and 1 year experience in the field, this K2 job being on the lower end of requirements. If you have a solid portfolio you have a better chance, but a lot of people won't even make one unless they're in school. the design field is completely over saturated with kids who can torrent photoshop and play with layer effect and call themselves designers. i don't blame companies who require this stuff because they do need to sift through the bullshit.

Can't score if you don't shoot!

I don't have any schooling that relates to journalism / photography / communications / etc... Yet I still managed to snag a job as a Editor & Photo Editor for a magazine -- and now GM for NS

I've also had a design job for the past year, i loved it, but at a certain point you realize you do need a degree in this time to excell in certain fields. i wanted to be able to get the jobs in the ski industry i really wanted, a degree is pretty much a stepping stone i need to get there

Yep they do! and that's why they write "Must have degree and X years of design work under your belt" because the kids who torrent photoshop and play with filters won't apply. However, the people who are motivated and have worked hard, or know they are talented in one way or another will still apply even if they haven't had the same opportunities.

Even if a business gets 200 applications, they will be able to narrow it down to 10 or so, mostly after looking at the first page of someone's book, because they are experienced enough to know talent over the copying of trends (or bad work) and they know what sort of work is going to fit with their brand.

I have a communication degree, but it's not like it's helped me get any jobs in the ski industry. Most "art" jobs are based on experience, people that just go to school for film or graphics but never make anything should just do business or something.

I have no degree in the design field and yet I've worked at a large company for three years.

As people said before me, your work is the most important thing.
