Graffiti-Art or Vandalism

graffiti is vandalism.. plain and simple, whether you think its art or not isnt the issue. We dont care either way.. i paint legal walls and trains on a weekly basis and i could give a fuck if someone thinks its wrong or not.

if its just a tag somebody scribbled on a wall thats vandalism. when its something somebody put time into that is more than a few lines of paint then its art.

^the whole building is covered in amazing grafiti...the owner had a huge compatition i guess and its all on the outside too, id definatley say its art

some really elaborate graffiti is cool, like the one posted up there^^. but, when i'm walking down the street and there's a ton of raunchy graffiti all over the place, it just makes the area look trashy and unclean, and i don't like it.

It cant be one or the other, its definitley both. It is vandalism, in its most simpliest form, yet it is also artistic. All you people crying about how its illegal and only vandalism...shut the hell up and show some respect for the artists. Ever heard of Basquait? eat it bitch...

on some abandon trains by the waterfront in burlington there is some absolutely sick graffiti, i would consider it art. it's got religious symbols and all this other cool shit hidden in it

I hate the idea of vandalizing shit, just do it on paper or in your house or something, not on someone else property. There are also legal walls you can paint on in almost every city. but anyway i think anything that takes less than half an hour to do is a waste

there was a skate park that held a comp of graff artists, and some of the stuff was just amazing. it looks way better than plain concerte and there would have been crapy tags any ways, this way theres art all around.

there for art for shure

If someone is doing it just to fuck someones property up, then it's vandalism. If it actually means something, then it's art.

It also depends on how much work goes into it, if someone throws a crappy tag on a fence, vandalism. If it's a well done bomb, art.

^sry mod, that was sarcasm. i was showing that i believe that gaffiti is def vandalism becuase people write obscene things. just imaging something obscene and inappropriate where that picture should be

swastika's are one thing, i'm for self expression through art, but swastika's and racist shit is just stupid, obviously i'm against that but i know people arn't gonna be for it...straight up graffiti is art, classified as vandalism if you look in the book

^well i wont disagree that it takes a talented person to be able to create some of the sick thing you see on buildings but the odds are they didnt get permission to put them there so no matter how good they are, they didnt have the right to do it. i just used swastikas to show that people could paint anything on a building and its still grafitti.

yep, i agree with 100% , but although they didn't get permission to put it there it's still art, and it's vandalism i too. so BOTH!!!!

did te disciples have permission to write the scriptures? fuck no, they did it anyways. who the fuck care if some kids are putting their names on shit

I studied graffiti for part of an art project - it's definately a form of art and those that do it well are very talented.

The question arises because they do it on public property which is when it becomes vandalism.

There is also the difference between the graffiti art and 'tags' which are just pointless.

see if you "studied" graffiti you would realize that to have a dop tag takes years and that tags are just as dope as pieces but most you just dont see it o well...

its vandalism u chode....unless u r getting paid to do it and given an area to do it in...then yes, its vandalism

depends. a little tag is a nasty piece of shit, but a whole wall with huge ass letters and symbols looks sick. when i went to Poland there was this road in the capital city where there is a huge ass wall running across the road for a couple of kilometres. its the only legal place to graffiti and the wall looks soooo nice.

well its always vandalism

but i would say that its art also, unless your just writing FUCK on a wall or something like that just because you think you're a badass

but yeah, i dont think its bad if your actually putting up your artwork on a wall or something

I believe it depends on two things: the quality of the piece, and where it is. If it's a legit piece, by a legit writer, and on a surface where it's not being complete dick, then yes it's art in my opinion. But that weak tag shit you see everywhere is most definitely NOT art. It's just being an asshole.

To lazy rite now to read through this thread, but here is my take.
Graffiti IS art and graffiti IS vandalism, and yes i write. Graffiti is obviously art, its the "bombing" part of graffiti that is looked down upon and is looked at as vandalism. But its also the most popular and rewarding part of graffiti. Quick spots = Quick fame. But i think if people were to except graffiti it would have a great affect. Kids would 1. Not be getting in trouble for it. 2. This would make them respect shit more and 3. we would only be out piecing because we don't have to worry about getting in trouble, and we would only want people to see our best. I know I for one bomb because it is fast and easy but when i have the time i only want to piece.

holy shit. theres so many classic members from back in the day. i completely forgot about d-loc. what an asshole that guy was. lol quality bump

Was anyone in Park City when Banksy did a few pieces around the area? For anyone who doesnt know he's from the UK and he's pretty infamous for doing thought provoking street art. I snapped a couple of them around several spots in Main St
