Graffiti-Art or Vandalism

I want to hear your opinions. Mine is that it is art because graffiti can be done on paper or on walls it doesn't matter where it is done. Keep this going.
 
First of all I haven't watched any air force one thing and second I am into writing so I wanted to know from people that didn't know much about it. I'm not saying that nobody else is into writing here it's just that most people aren't.

your a dumbass. its vandalism because your spraypainting/writing shit on a wall that somebody built for a reason, and not to be painted on. half the shit looks like crap anyways with paint dripping down from it and stuff
 
depends. sometimes if the persons really talented and they actually know how to do it right, it can be art. but usually it just looks like shit.
 
in largers cities many of the owners of the building, either a restaurant, or shop, or whatever, will pay a graffiti artists to paint something somewhat relevant to the building's content. at least they do that in montreal everywhere and it's gorgeous.

Theres so many kinds of "graffiti" that its hard to decide. Pointless ugly tags on every flat surface is definitely vandalism. There are some amazing pieces on legal (and illegal) walls that are beautiful pieces of art. All depends where, why and how its done.
 
Graffiti is a form of art...BUT when done on someone else's property without their permission, it is vandalism. End of story.
 
if its an expression oneself, then art.

but if its racist slang or profanity scrawled on the inside of a culvert, then no, its not art
 
graffiti is art. but it depends. tagging someones tombstone or a government building is straight up vandalism and thoughtless. if its on an apartment building or something and its an actual mural or somethign thats good and took an artist to make, then its sick. i hate seeign people just writing shit on walls like NIGGA WHO DA BOSS
 
Definitely vandalism. If the "artist" doesn't have permission it's vandalism, plain and simple. That doesn't mean it isn't art, it's just illegally placed.

And by the way, art has different definitions to different people. What may be "racist" or "gang signs" to one, might be an artistic expression to another.
 
some of it is very artistic and looks awesome but some sux so it depends how good u r but id say art
 
First of all it's art....not really much need for interpretation. If you don't like it then don't look. When I am in a public place and I see a fat ugly disgusting person, what do I do? I look away. So if you don't like graffiti then don't look. I say as long as they let the ugos run around town let the art stay too.

ehhh i don't think you can really compare it to a fat person at the mall and say "look the other way". what about when there's wildly inappropriate profanity sprayed all over the side of a building and little kids have to see it all the time? i agree that some graffiti is very very well done and a legitimate form of art, but any way you look at it, it's vandalism, period.
 
The point is, your head moves from side to side for a reason. Look away if you don't like it. Something you may find to be unattractive may not be to someone else. Oh yeah and it is the exact same thing as a fat person, an eye sore is an eye sore!
 
except that a person being fat is not in any way, shape or form defacing someone else's property. there's really no argument here.
 
it really depends. like the vandalism part is a huge part to it. like in sf most peices are legal, which is art, but i couldn't say that tags, hollows, and fills are really art. a lot of them are creative, but a writer only usually has one or two tags and one throw, so its not really art. and that is all that mosty people do. and it wouldn't really be grafitti if it wasn't vandalism. i kinda think it is a good thing though
 
shit most you people dont know what your talking about and dont turn this into a "skateboarding isnt a crime" BS... Real Writing is vandalism thats why it is done sure its art but its still vandalism.. and also why you hatin on throwies and tags it takes so long to get an ill tag than to be able to piece... most people over look street bombing bec they dont know... but in this thread you either know or you act like you know.... It is only vandalism when a)done by an "artist" with no talent or b) done by a Vandal, meaning the german tribe that helped sack rome.

why cant you vandalize someones shit and have it be art too. theres not an arwnser to this question, and you are making it way too black white. so many differnt types of grafitti, and lots of itis just people dropping quick shit all over the place to get up.
 
it is art to some, and vandalism to others. it also depends where it is, and who is going to see it. you put graffiti on someones fence, they will take it as vandalism. and it only becomes vandalism when tax payers have to pay for it to be taken away. but for the most part, if it looks awesome, than why take it away? it give the city a new look. And as long as its not actually physically hurting someone, than I'm fine with it, and I can call some of it Art because I knew it took the person time to do.

IF YOU ASK ANY STREET BOMBERS IF GRAF WAS LEGAL WOUOLD THEY STILL DO IT MOST WOULD SAY NO BEC THE RUSH WOULDNT BE THERE.. So TRUE GRAFFITI is VANDALISM... legals and shit look good bec they have so much time to make it look good but that isnt graffiti.... If you dont know you need to not talk about this subject OK????
 
Depends where, who and why it was done. Lets say a gang signs their graffiti on someone's property is definitivly vandalism.

But, if an artist gets payed to draw on a city wall (by the municipality) is art
