i can do 3's 5's and 7's, but i cant grab for shit. whenever i try i loose my balance/it messes up my spin. pleaseee help! :)

just be patient with your grabs. dont rush them.. wait till you've set your trick then grab.

you're probably going for your grab right off the lip..

I had the same problem. I don't know what helps other ppl, but I just got the grab down with out spinning, so that way when I tried it while spinning, it was a lot easier and didn't have to think about it as much.

just chill with trying the more tech stuff. I'm definitely planning on not throwing anything over a 540 this year without solid tweaks and/or dub grabs in them. style is what's good now.

for grabbing with 3's when you pop and suck your knees up. practice doing that on straight airs and 180s. Then make sure your 360 rotation is smooth and after the rotation is set and going just suck up the knees and reach er down there. Once the rotation is going you shouldn't be too offset by reaching for your grab. In other words, it shouldn't send you off axis if you reach for a grab if you're doing it right.

same problem... ive been practicing bringin my knees up during my 3's and keeps my spin nice n smooth and im starting to learn grabs

yea what i would do is just slowly work your way down to the grab, even if it takes you like 20 tries just go a bit further every time without going off axis, it'll come

just tuck up, reach down, and grab. and don't look at your skis when you grab keep spotting your landing and turning your head.

I don't think that is the best way to go about it... For some people they develop their own style, and then try to progress their trick bags. I don't work this way. I learned all the basic spins and flips and stuff without any style or grabs. 3's 5's 7's 9's etc.. and mistys and corks and stuff. I made sure I had those tricks super consistant, and then slowly started to work in grabs. Trampolines are definitely a good way to ease into the more difficult tricks while not being pinned out. Mutes are really smooth on the tramp, and get your body comfortable in more styley and realistic positions. Then it's just all practice, watch the pros and your favorite skiers, and when you see a trick you want to learn, just study it and see how they set it, where they rotate, and how they spot their landings and stuff. It obviously just takes some real quality practice to get better and better. Working on your own style and being really creative and smooth looking is the hardest part. That's where I am now. If anyone knows any helpful hints in that department, let me know.
This style of learning might not be right for you though, 'cause I've definitely had people tell me that I just huck myself and should have worked on style before learning new tricks. I guess it just depends on how you like to learn. Wow this is a really long post, sorry. I'll stop talking.

when i spin and grab i feel like i put my arm somewhere and bring my feet to where i want to grab while spinning. when i have done it the other way around ( reach for my feet with my arm) i have gone off axis.

i hope that makes sense.

you have to get the feeling of the grab before you try to do it in a trick. i was learning how to do a nose grab and this is the process i went about.

+i wanted to do a critical nose

+on the lift i grabbed my tip and felt how my legs felt with a straight leg and where to reach on my ski

+the next run i hit every jump in the park attempting this grab (i continued doing this until it felt natural)

+i realized to do the grab best i needed to grab high on my ski, then slide my hand up to get it to my desired height on the ski (you will have to make changes to best suit you in the way you grab because of your flexibility and how it affects your balance)

+after i had the grab down i did a 3 and grabbed it, i did it perfectly because i was used to the way the grab feels and a 3 is an easy rotation for me

when i learned to spin initially i grabbed my skis, try throwing in a tail grab it helps because it is a pretty simple grab to throw with a spin.

i did left 3 and grabbed my right tail with my right hand. it is important that you pop off the lip and set your spin and then reach for the grab

i find when I do a safety grab with a 3 (only one I can do), it makes the spin smoother and I can actually stay more balanced. I grab a little before I get to 180 degrees in a 360.

What the fuck.. Last year I saw you land switch 9s, some almost corked

And you still can't grab.. damn you!

I learned all the grabs I know (not that many lol) in a 180 cause thats the trick I feel the most comfortable doing. Then, once I had the grab super smooth in a 180, I moved it to 3s...and only recently to 5s lol...I guess I spend most of my time on rails lol.....

i had this EXACT same problem till the last day of momentum then frank raymond told me to just relax in the air and i got it the next time, i dont know how to put it any better, but it worked for me

yeah, i used to freak out and totally pencil. i know everyone says this, but dont think about it, just relax

i think it's easiest to learn tail grabs and blunts first but maybe thats just me. i also found it eaiser to set the spin for the grab you're doing. like if you go a bit corked it's usually ok just dont be scared and grab hold it and if u crash super mondo correct it next time.

Start out with something simple, like safety grabs. Pop, set your spin, then bring your knees up towards your chest when you start learning. Reach down for the grab, and you are set. When learning how to grab and spin, make sure and don't look back at the lip of the jump as you set your spin. Keep your head level with the spin (keep your head up) and you should be fine.

hmm....when I saw the title of this thread I immediately thought of Jeopardy.

Me: I will take Skiing for $800

Alex: The answer is: Grabbing while spinning

Me: Um...what are things that Simon Dumount doesnt like to do?

Alex: Correct! That puts Ryan in the lead with $11700. Dan Nertall is in second place with $5600 and rounding out our group is Jethrow Dorrison with $1800

yo n once you start gettin into the tricky grabs flexabilty deffidently helps
so stretch alot because it help a ton with all aspects of skiing

Listen to Gus. I did the same thing, I went right from rollerblading into skiing and I could do all the spins and flips they just looked like balls. I found it easier to just learn how to huck you're tricks and the slowly improve style from there.

Another thing that a lot of skiers do but dont realize is they grab to early, essentially trying to grab immediately after taking off. Set your spin a little bit before trying to grab

At first just try grabbing your boot while doing 180s and 360s because it is the easiest grab you can do and after you can just work you way into better grabs.

Cannon Ball Steeze.

I was stuck there for a few weeks this season. Just force yourself to bring your knees up when you spin. It feels different, but it works. when you get that on lock, you start to realize that your hands are only like 6 inches from your skis, and your like, fuck I could grab that... then you do... thats what I did... anyway...

pretty much i just progressed from doing pencilly 3's to just bringing my knees up as high as i could while i spun once and not only did it make my spin 2x smoother but it makes grabing way more easy.

precisley. DO NOT GRAB UNTIL YOU ARE AT 180 AND YOU ARE SPOTTING THE JUMP.

EVER!!!!

trust me. ull pretty much throw down if you do this.

just do 3s all day everyday and start grabbing them slowly until ur so comfortable with grabbing that it becomes harder not to grab( yes it can happen) then step it up into your bigger spinns ....before grabbing your threes you have to be super relaxed in the air

ya i have this same problem, and i think its cause i grab too early off the lip. it makes sense to wait until your already spinning before you start to grab, cause i get messed up when i try too early

To grab, do not reach down to the skis, but bring them up so you dont go off balance. reaching down will throw you off and you'll bail. if you bring the skis up toward your hand, you dont have to reach nearly as far. I found this very helpful.

However if your doin double true nose, you gotta bend like a bitch.

dude i have the same problem i can grab once and a while, but i loose balance too. I am practicing on the tramp and just repeating, like eeveryone has said

ive always been able to grab on a tramp, even with flips, but the main thing for ME was to relax but it might be different for everyone else

no dude everybody goes through the hucking phase and that's ok. once you get used to spinning and bringing your knees up the grab is just kinda there so dont even trip youll get it.

every coach ive ever talked to has said to wait until 180 to get the grab. unless youre doing a 180, then you can pretty much grab whenever you want cause its so slow.

for sure dont grab until 180. thats big. dont overthink it either just do it. start with safety of kang. when doing a mute put your other arm up to balance

The best way I can describe it. You have to pop in such a way that it sets you up for whatever grab your going to throw. Sall about pop.

try getting in a pool while learning new tricks...

Like actually get in the water...

It makes you feel weightless, and helps with the thought of how to do the grab

also a tramp is wayy good...
