Grab Guide With Pics

Ok this is just an attempt to come up with some kind of list of grabs with directions on how to do them, then throw some pics in to make it easy for everyone to understand. I had noticed a lot of "I need new grab" threads and figured this would be a good start to them. All the pics are going to be off of NS and be cited to their rightful poster. So wish me luck, and lets get started

Safety Grab
Probably the easiest grab to throw. Simply take your right hand and grab under you're right binding on the outside of the ski. While this should be outrageously self-explanatory, here is a pic can be doubled by grabbing with both hands.

Next up is the Mute grab. This is done by crossing the skis, and using the right hand to grab the outside of edge of the left ski in front of the binding. Balance is often obtained by raising the left hand above the head. Not overly difficult and still very stylish. This pic shows the grab very well but with the hands switched.

The Japan grab is done by reaching your right hand behind your back and grabbing the inside edge of the left ski at or behind the tailpiece.

Critical grabs are very similar to japan grabs, except instead of being grabbed behind the binding, you grab in front of the binding. So you reach across your body, grab the inside of edge of the left ski with right hand, in front of toe piece. Look at the third and fourth step for best shot

Toxic grabs are done by crossing the fronts of the skis, then grabbing the inside edge of the right ski with the right hand.

The octograb is done by crossing skis then grabbing nose on the left ski with right hand and tail on the right ski with left hand. Or vice versa (See Gagnier during the Xgames '08)

Ok so these are the basics without getting into double grabs and such. Feel free to add something to the list, just search the media and find a good pic to go with it.

i know most of us know better but for the ones who dont you sholdnt of said only right hand cuz you make it seem like your left hand is useless.

no, you are wrong. Blunt is crossed.

grabbing anthing behind the very tip of you tail crossed is tindy.

O yea I was thinking that the whole time but kept it right hand for the sake of consistency. I meant to say hands and skis can be switched.

i disagree a blunt is the same thing as a reversal tail and true tail is a true tail like he said it and what your thinking of uncrossed tail or just tail

Ok time for some additions

Nose mute is done by doing a mute grab but with the grab at the nose of the ski, couldn't find a good pic of this one.

The Japical is a japan grab plus a critical grab.

The screamin seamen is not a grab, but still quite interesting. You lift move one leg forward, and one leg back, like you're going for a daffy, but then cross the skis over each other so that your legs are crossed, but the skis are still going straight. By doubling this, your skis become uncrossed and you can ski straight again. These can be done in the air, on the ground, on rails... wherever.

The Phil grab is done by reaching your right hand down and grabbing the inside of the right ski behind the binding (can be done with left hand and left ski also)

The guitar grab is done by crossing the fronts of the skis then grabbing the outside of the top ski with both hands

Keep givin me some more grabs to look up, and i'll throw them up here. Can't remember everything right now, so I just need some help joggin my memory. Thanks for the props everyone, this took some time but i'm out injured right now and this is how I get to live my ski life haha.

will someone explain more detailed wut a cruton is. it seems almost exactly the same as a jappical.

cruton, double japan, and japical are all really similar. They all have to do with the front hand. And I believe double japan is the exact same as one of them.

in skateboarding and snowboarding for a rocket air you cross your arms and grab nose, so id assume its the same for skiing.

rocket is just double nose on skateboards and snowboards. crossed arms would be cross rocket and/or crotch rocket, depending on how neat you are.

I've heard grabbing both noses as being double nose and I've also heard both hands on one nose as being double nose, so this is one of those grey areas.

No, and that's the idea. Tindy is the lamest grab in snowboarding. Noone has any business grabbing behind the tail of your skis.

Normally this is the type of issue I would say "who cares" but if you are going for the full effect it's important. It doesn't matter if you are skiing the park and do a tindy, but if you are a pro, and trying to look good for the cam, there's no point in grabbing tindy when you can grab blunt.

I should have removed "noone".

Im saying that for big tricks that are being filmed. when it's Tindy vs. Blunt, blunt always wins.

i don't understand this whole "tindy" deal... is it sort of like a safety grab that you grab more towards the tail? if so that shouldn't even be a grab. the "japanical" and double japan are the exact same... i'm not sure what a crouton is. whats that grab that jon olsson has been doing where he grabs japan and grabs his nose with his other hand? i think you're wrong about the phil grab as well... i was under the impression that a phil grab was essentially a crossed up safety grab. what about "under mutes" where you grab mute but your grabbed ski is underneath your other ski. whats the name of the grab where you grab your left tail with your right hand (or vise versa)?

Yea I realized that after I did the whole thing I was like "O shit i forgot to put in that hands can work vice versa" Eh i'll blame it on the vicodin I was on at the time haha.
