GPA?

yes, i know there are a million threads and even one below this somewhere but idc...

i'm a sophomore in highschool, yeah i know that's kinda early to worry about this stuff but oh well. i am a really smart kid actually, but school just doesn't interest me. i mean i make mostly B's and a couple A's, but i just can't really apply myself in school. i never do homework or listen etc. etc. the things you learn are just so boring, most of it is useless, and i often find myself trying to think of ways the teachers are wrong and things of that nature. anyways i am just wondering do colleges really take your GPA into consideration THAT much. i think i have like a 3.4 or 3.5 now, which isn't really THAT great...i know i will do really good on my SAT's cause i did really good on PSAT's this year...so yeah how much does GPA count, as well as SAT or ACT scores?

you should be fine with a 3.4 to a 3.5. I have a 3.2 and i know that ill be fine getting into state schools and ones that i want to get into.

I have a 3.4. sucks because my freshmen year was like an A, mostly B's, and a C or two. my soph. year was better and my junior year should be even better than that because I really want to bring it up to 3.5 or 3.7 or something. not caring freshmen year kinda screwed me in some ways.

.

Well, it'll be easier to convince a college you should be there with a good GPA rather than telling them you're smart but didn't try.

you are exactly the same as me....i could get above a 4.0 if i tried really hard....i just cant bring myself to do it so i get like a 3.4

Im a freshman and ive got a 4.0 right now. I want to get into Western Wa uni. And i believe they require a 3.6 or higher to get into collage your freshman year.

colleges really look at your whole application from gpa to essays to sats and acts. obviously a higher gpa will help you get into schools but it isnt the only thing they look at. i would say shoot for around 3.5 and you will be good for alot of schools

heres the deal man. college's look at everything, but they do know that some kids who arent very smart test very well on the SAT's, and the other way around. that means that even though you will most likley get high SAT's, they will still want to see a high GPA as well. now, 3.4 isnt bad, but its not really great either. i would honestly just tough it out for the next year or 2 and try to bring it up to like 3.6ish or 3.7 because then you can really go to a lot of schools.

you also gotta be a well rounded kid, because if your applying to good schools (i mean GOOD schools) and you got a solid everything, but nothing to make you stand out, then your just like everybody else that applied to that school.

my point is, you can prolly get away with a lower gpa if you put time into SAT's, college essays, and extra curricular activites (i donno if you will get recruited for a sport or anything, but they can give alot of pull if you get in contact with the coach and seem interested).

oh and by the way, something ive learned about getting homework done that you dont want to do- get a group of like 4 kids and have one kid do the hw each night. just switch people each night and copy (try to not get caught- make it somewhat different) untill its your turn to do the hw. that way you are somewhat up to date with whats going on in class with minimal effort and you get your hw in all the time

yeah thanks for the long response man. and junior and senior year at my school are really easy, a lot of my buddies are seniors and have like 3.7s and had like a 2 something sophomore year. i just need to try and apply myself a little more, i just can never seem to do it with skiing, girlfriend, buddies i'm sure you know haha. also i am pretty good at soccer i am almost certain i will play in college, but it depends on the school too. anyways like i said thanks for all of that info.

does anybody elses' school have different weights for different classes? like in my school we get an extra credit for taking a level 1/honors/AP class, so if you get a B in Level 1 english, it counts as an A towards your gpa? i had like a 4.2 soph year, i can't tell if it's good or fucking me

yeah, my school does the same. it works out well if you're in those classes and you're doing well.

but I hate how in my school getting an 89 is the same as getting an 80. that's a huge difference.

dont lose it. i used to do soo well in school then same shit happened to me where i couldnt apply myself. im struggling with my 3.0 it sucks fat cock. im a soph to.

im the exact same way. i dont do shit, pull good grades, piss my teachers off...school is so fucking lame, im not going to college.

I feel like test scores are more important. GPAs are so different between schools that standardized tests are the best way to compare students from across the country. I personally feel like people with the high GPAs and no test scores to back it up aren't that smart, they just try hard. I don't know if colleges think like that.

I've had a 4.0 every semester since 7th grade. I'm only a freshman though, but later on my AP classes will get my gpa above 4.0 hopefully. Having parents that are professors has its pluses and minuses....

first of all, i would like to say that youre clearly the man for having a 4.0 in middle school, its quite an accomplishment but, to answer the thread, yes, colleges do look at gpa a lot, which is basically your transcript, but i would try to get as good a gpa as i could

this is what i was thinking too, which is kinda why i made the thread. because i know people in my school, who are almost dumb and pull of like 3.8s or 3.9s. they just do a lot of extra credit, all their homework, study all night long and pull like B's on tests...nothing against them though, that's good really.

and i think they do take them into consideration, but i think with a decent GPA and good test scores you should be okay...

I need a 3.8 to get into my state school...UW.

But I'm not sure if that's adjusted to a 4.0 scale or the 5.0 scale with the AP and honors courses being 5.0. If the latter is true, I shouldn't have a problem, but since my high school didn't do that the highest you could get was a 4.0, and I had a 3.6 or so before switching to Canadian schooling.

GPAs in general suck, because they aren't very specific though...I should have had a higher GPA because I was 1% or .5 of a percent away from getting an A in a few classes, which drops my GPA down a few points every time that happens.

fuck the whole college application shit. any one with the money should be let in if they really want to learn

Ive realized that i procrastinated my entire life. from kindergarden until grade 6 I was a fucking angel. A+ on everything. Then i had a bad year in grade 7, and that just threw me off. Since then I have gone from a perfect student to around a C average. I am currently in grade 12, and last year i promised myself I would try hard all year, becasue like you, I am smart, yet cant find it in me to apply myself. This year started good, but quickly declined to 2 A's and 2 C's. I have decided that I really enjoy art and that kind of stuff so I am applying at an art college after I take a break from schoooo. That way, my grades will not matter AS much, and my natural art ability will be more noticed.

Most schools take away the weighted grades from AP classes. At least thats what my college claimed to do. They get thousands of applications though so I don't know if they actually take the time to do it if you don't have above a 4.0.

And whats the deal with people acting like state schools are so easy to get into? A lot of them are competitive with the Ivies. (Michigan, Cal Berkeley, Virginia, etc.)

gpa's dont take into consideration ap and honors courses at my school. my consouler told me its more about class rank or something. colleges will look at your gpa but they will also look at your sat. a really good sat can even out a not so good gpa. i'd say your are set for most state schools. but work and try and bump it to a 3.7 or something. then your set.

Yeah level 3 courses have no added points to the final grade, level 2 have 5 points added to the final grade, and level 1(AP) courses have 10 points added to the final grade. I have no idea what my GPA is on the 4 point scale, because our school just does it on the numeric scale.

It all depends on the school. There are some colleges that will look at your SAT scores, but not weigh them as heavily as your GPA or class ranking. On the other hand, some schools will not even take a look at your application if your SAT score is not high enough.
