Returning from a brief vacation to Germany in February, Bill Hogan was selected for additional screening by customs officials at Dulles International Airport

outside Washington, D.C. Agents searched Hogan's luggage and then

popped an unexpected question: Was he carrying any digital media cards

or drives in his pockets? "Then they told me that they were impounding

my laptop," says Hogan, a freelance investigative reporter whose recent

stories have ranged from the origins of the Iraq war to the impact of

money in presidential politics.

Shaken

by the encounter, Hogan says he left the airport and examined his bags,

finding that the agents had also removed and inspected the memory card

from his digital camera. "It was fortunate that I didn't use that

machine for work or I would have had to call up all my sources and tell

them that the government had just seized their information," he said.

When customs offered to return the machine nearly two weeks later,

Hogan told them to ship it to his lawyer.

This sucks for any of us who are traveling out of the country or have to for work, or whatever purpose, since alot of Film Companies and Athletes do so much traveling!

it sucks but its for national security..... i mean wat if the guy when he went to iraq to investigate the war was abducted and forced to listen terrorist BS and had all the addresses in that laptop to all the alquida linked members living in the US so he could get bombs and shizz from them.... then none of u would have heared the story like it is now...... if ur still reading this.... it jus makes me mad when people get pissed about an hour delay in the airport cause of security... they r jus tryin to protect all ur asses... tho the system is corrupt... thats jus a lil of my bs on this subject....

you touched on two completely different topics. I'm all for security, but duplicating my computers HD's, or taking them for two weeks at a time? Thats overkill, and unecessary! And a breach of any privacy, they can strip me down, w/e I could care less, when it comes to my personal belongings and information though, thats where the line is crossed, and that could be said for most!

The acronym stands for "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism

pretty cool huh

I think safety regulations like the patriot act are definitely a necessity, I mean 20 minutes from my hometown of Saratoga, in Albany, a few years ago they caught some dudes planning a terrorist attack on the same street one of my boys lives on. Saving even 1 life definitely made the immediate investigation and wire taps worth it in my opinion, but what's unconstitutional is when assholes in power like the Bush Admin, and the government that took this reporters property, completely abuse their powers and the system for totally irrelevant shit. That is what needs to be regulated, youd think congress would come into play for regulatory standards but of course not.

It is a very slippery slope. They may save a life one day but the next they are strip searching 80 year old women in airports. I'm like patrick henry, give me liberty or give me death.

George Sensenbrenner, the man who wrote the act, is our district's representative and lives a few miles from my house on a super exclusive lake. I only think this can be proformed when traveling internationally though

lulz people agreeing with the patriot act! open ya peepa's kiddos the governments got you bent over the kitchen counter in mid thrust of its big black spikey dick of power, corruption, and puppetry.

if you cant say something intelligent, in english, then don't talk.

if you think airport security is about national security, well then your obviously a 10 year old with a learning disability.

theres no such thing as al qaeda, its a generic name invented by the state department to designate "terrorists"

abductions are for leverage not to force journalists to learn political ideas.

you cant be linked to something and be a "member" of something.

no one would try and smuggle a bomb, they can be made in spain just as easily as in africa (maybe even easier)

corruption refers to the abuse of power by the people who hold it, for personal gain.

Dont talk about things if you dont even understand why you dont understand them.
