Gotta Choose A Fat Ski...

What can you tell me about them? I can't even find the measurements...and I'm thinking about the Gots seriously now...the only reason I haven't decided on the Prophet 130 though is the fact that I suspect they'd be insane to ride anywhere except in the deepest pow dumps.

Pretty similar to the triplets (contruction wise - sandwich) and just alot more burly. Comes in a 192 or 181. Its atomics backcountry freestyle ski.

 
How stiff are they? Also, what are the pros and cons of Sandwich vs. Cap construction? Anybody like one or the other better, and why?
 
sandwich construction all the way. I find them to be much livelier, less dead feeling. more durable, but at the same time if you are skiing on them wrong then you will chip up the topsheet.
 
The Prophet 130's are looking sweeter, and sweeter by the minute...just the thought of having a ski that crazy. *Must...Resist...Urge...To...Buy...Prophets...*
 
hahah, ahh, the dillema of choosing a pow ski. almost all of the choices you have are killer skis. having kingswoods would be dope, but definatley $$$. Iggy knows his shit, and definately one's opinion to listen too. i absolutely love my madens, but they are 179's, so lighter than the 89's. mite wanna consider how much these babys are gonna cost as well, becaue that can make the decision easier

elizabeths, something like a 110 waist, heard they are good for park too, i have flexed them and they are quite soft.
 
the prophets are stiff... real stiff and heavy

because josh bryant can and does ski them doesnt make them godly skis. you are really tall and really skinny- which leads me to believe that you dont have much core or leg muscle to throw around- meaning that you should have a softer ski- which the prophet is not. ive ridden them and they are sick on groomers but a bit too stiff for pow

just my opinion- and im probly wrong on your size but your dimensions speak to that.
 
No dude, you got it...I am really skinny. But everyone says they aren't that stiff, not questioning you, but I read a comparison between the Prophet and the ANT...and it said the Prophet was quite a bit softer, and has less swing weight(and I dunno how the hell that's possible) than the ANT. But I dunno I've never ridden them, I'd imagine you'd have to muscle them around at least a little, but I don't want a ski that is totally un-managable.
 
I have been reading this thread and one things sticks out to me...for some reason you think you need something that is 110-130 in the waiste and 190cm long. That is way to much ski for someone your size. I ski on 177 mantra's and I am 180lbs and have never had a problem with float. I would love to have a PURE powder ski, which would be the Sanouk for me in 193 (only size) but if you get a ski as big as your talking about, forget being able to ski trees or the groomer back to the lift.

i'm 6'3" and 155 lbs myself, and i wouldn't ski on a pow ski under 185cm and 100mm underfoot if you PAID ME. even that is small.

OUCH SEAN! I have to disagree with you three times in a row.

First the Gun Lab 188 IS NOT wood, though Salomon did put wood into a couple models for this year.

Second the new Gotama does not have the same huge tail as the previous generations. It has a more reduced tail but is still turned up enough to land switch on and whatnot.

And lastly the Prophet 130 is an awesome ski and if you're a good enough skier it can be as verstatile as a 100-110 waist ski because it is soft enough and has a progressive shaped midsection that gives it a short turn radius. On my feet they have felt better in soft snow, from fresh to fuct, then any of the above mentioned skis. This guy just hadn't previously showed any intrest in wider skis so I didn't mention them, plus no one that hasn't seriosly ridden them belives people like me when we rave about them as everyday soft snow skis.

So as for the guy who started this post, if you have very strong legs and equally big balls and can get a good deal on that guys Prophets then go for it. Or just get last years for dirt cheap as REI couldn't sell them to their clientele to save their life and practically gave them away so there are a bunch of them out there that people paid dirt for and would resell at a good price.
 
We are talking about the Prophet 130's at this point not the 100's. The 130 is one of the softest skis on the market so i really hope you were just confused about the model we are discussing.

The 100 is substantially stiffer but still much softer than the ANTs.

Comparing 130 flex to Ants is like comparing park skis to race skis, ie there is no comparison.
 
the gun lab isn't wood. i was told it was, but i looked around and it isn't.

the tail on the gotama was tuned down a little bit, yes, but it is my no means small. perfectly suitable for landing switch and pow.

and the prophet 130 is one of the softest skis on the market? are you kidding me? it's suprisingly stiff. there are much much better skis out there. fuck line anyways.

and flex, if i was to point out everything i disagreed with you about, i would have pages and pages and pages. i could probably write a fucking book.
 
Dynastar big troubles, they were my ski for this year and they are the sickest ski. There not to heavy ( but there not super light ), and there pretty soft as far as big skis go ( I used them in the park all this year ) there just a really solid ski to land and ride. The tails are also raised higher that the tips I think by 5mm so they stomp the switch landings in pow.

I'd rep the Salomon 1080 Gun... remember when the Pocket Rocket was THE ski for every pro freeskier in the biz.. Salomon continues to set the standard in BC booter skis. The gun has everything you want. People these days are getting too hung up on the boutique skis like Line, 4frnt, Ninthward, Armada etc, and not considering that the larger companies are churning out top-notch skis that will fill the bill as well as have better customer support and availability.
 
Okay, first of all...I know what kind of ski I want. Maybe you didn't notice that I'm 6'4"...that's pretty damn tall...and even though I'm not all that heavy I know perfectly well that I can handle a ski of this length...before I got into riding twin tips I rode a pair of 191cm Atomic Super Moguls all over the hill. As for the Waist...I just want a ski that no matter how much pow I get in, I won't sink...I do live in ALASKA in case you didn't notice. As For the rest of this stuff...Everyone keeps saying ANT...and I know that is not the right ski for me, I just don't need something that stiff, cause I am pretty light...I dunno about the VCT/EHP cause I have no idea what they flex like. And I own a pair of Mike Nick Pros, and they are a solid ski for sure...so I have nothing against Line, I dunno why so many people hate a compnay that has done so much for our sport. I don't like a noodle by any means, I skied Fujis once(granted, they were the 169s) ad they chattered and scared the fuck out of me just cruising groomers, so I gave them back after one run, I hated them. The Prophet 130s are looking sweet, cause they don't sound like they are super, super stiff...they can float anywhere, and they just entice me with their insane-ness. I dunno though, still not decided for sure.
 
DUde, like somebody said before, the ANT is waay exagerated in the stiffness department, and plus they did soften them this year. How can you count them out.

With that said thee VCT may be a good option too.
 
EHP/VCT flexes a tad softer than the gotama, and it's pretty much the exact same shape.

what about tha 187? 109mm underfoot and a medium stiffness i believe.

Those Puder Luders are crazy badass, that is such a sick graphic......but the description is kinda confusing, I'm not sure if it's stiff or soft or what...but damn they're pricey.

There's no way I could afford them, but I think you're right about flex, cause on the order sheet now I notice it says :'Standard ski shape, custom stiffness - 1,200 CHF' Which comes to 962.85 USD...I can't afford that at all, but damn I would like to have a pair.
 
How stiff is Tha 187...just out of curiosity...not sure I want to support Ninthward with my money cause of the whole thing that went on awhile ago with them and this site.
 
First off I must say that I wasn't tryin to bring the hate, just that I was surprised at the inacurracy of stuff being said in this thread and you were part of it.

The 130 is not stiff at all if you've ever been on a pair or hand flexed it, though it does ski more stable than the flex would suggest because of its sheer size. Maybe that is what you mean by "surprisingly stiff" that it skis surprisingly well, but I don't know if you have actually skied it or not. I have and it is soft and it is great.

And what is this "fuck line" business? That is kind of a fucked up attitude, they make great skis. I am taking a more "We'll see" approach to the whole K2 thing. Who knows maybe it won't suck, but anyway your name reflects a love for a chinese made ski anyway so I don't know wtf your beef is with all the Line business anyway. Did you ever ski the Mothership Ti? It crushed the Pistol/Vicious. The 100 and 130 are just bigger and better.

Sure there are hella big pow skis out there to choose from but that doesn't mean we should just say "Ef this brand or that." I'm not a huge K2 fan but I don't say "Fuck the Pontoon" before I ski it. Notice how when this thread starting leaning toward shorter turn radius fat skis for versatility's sake how I stopped even mentioning the skis I rep because they are all so straight?

And if you ever disagree with what I say on a factual basis, as in I say something that is empirically incorrect, then I'd hope you would tell me. If you are working on a book length version that is fine but it is my job to know this shit and if I am misleading people or just have wrong info to give I need to know. That is the beauty of the internet, between the 80,000 people that come to this site there are going to be a few people that can tell us what we don't know, especially when we think we do and are wrong. We all make mistakes and when we do it in open forum we get jonged, that is how it works.
 
Anyone know how the Atomic Thug compares to the Prophet, they are both pretty big and sick looking, also any idea of the turning radius on the Thug? Cause it comes in a 192...which is a nice sounding length for me. Any other skis of around this size that come to mind anyone?
 
How's the flex and turning radius? I still wanna be able to rip some sick tree lines, that's one reason I shied away from the JP vs. Julien. How do the Thug and the Prophet compare in that respect? Cause those are the two I'm kinda looking at right now, although I'd love a pair of those Puder Luder's.
 
i also wasn't trying to bring the hate, so don't feel like it. a book? little bit of an exaggeration. there have just been a few things you've said recently that tickled me the wrong way "for example: bamboo sidewalls making the ski not good for cliffs or jumps, especially when i need scott to sell his skis so he can finally build a press and i can finally get MY skis).

anyways, the prophet 130. i don't think it's ANT or explosiv stiff, but i certainly don't think it's a pocket rocket or maden. i skiied stiffer to me, when i was expecting a ski of that size to be super soft so it's more managable. i don't consider hand flexes good for much, so i usually don't use that to base my opinion.

fuck line. personally i don't like thier skis at all. i think they ski like shit and are sketchy as hell. for that matter... i don't like K2 either. fuck K2. everything they make is a goddamn noodle with way too much sidecut. nothing they make tickles my fancy. (my seth pistols were my first pair of skis though, and i'm kind of attached, not that i ski them anymore except if it's opening week and i need rock skis.) if you want a real ski, customs are the only way to go. capitals, kingswoods, igneous if you're a rich man... i think volkl makes quality sticks. i'd ski volkls, and surfaces in the park.

I had a pair of Seth Vicious' last season. Great ski, performs very well in everything from groomers to powder. If you'll be riding switch often, definetly mount them closer to centre. i have mine at +5 and i'd still like them closer to centre.
 
Haha...hey sean incase you didn't notice the mantra was one of the top selling and ranked skis last year...and i would love to see you keep up in the trees with these huge ass skis...the big skis are only good for above tree line skiing when you can go fast enough to need the extra stability...oh and to the other kid...just becuase you can ski a 191 mogul ski does not mean you can ski a 191 powder ski....they are so different...and did you ever notice how ski length is chosen based on wieght not hieght? Do whatever you want...it is your money

The wider a ski is the more it floats. The more it floats the quicker and more nimble it can navigate the powder. As such 100mm+ waisted skis outski 90-99mm waisted skis like the Mantra everywhere, ESPECIALLY in the trees. The Mantra and skis like it are for a dying breed of folk who either don't know from experience how much better bigger skis like Gotamas and Sanouks (to use the volkl examples) are, and whose styles are old and not accustomed to the reality of modern ski technology. That is why you see so many guys in their early 20's who kill it big mountain right now, because we have been lucky enough to come up on big skis. Skis like the Mantra, Vicious, PR, etc hold us back in comparison to bigger skis.

I have worked in the skis industry for 7 years now and me and my colleagues would be the first to admit that "the top selling and ranked skis" of a given year are NOT necesarrily the best. A lot more than the reality of a skis performance goes into sales and reviews my friend and anyone who doesn't understand that is an obvious victim to the normative hegemonic influences of the neoliberal capitalist restructuring of our time.

There are threads pages long on TGR about guys who would like to trade there Mantras for old Explosives or any model year Gotama.

One last thing, the wider a ski the longer you ski it for the most part, not the other way around as you suggested. If he can ski a narrow 191 he can definitely ski a wide one. The average length Mens "All Mountain Ski" based on ammount sold last year is around 175. The average length powder ski is around 8cm longer. Short skis can be made stiff enough and are for carving so they can be short. Shortness doesn't cut it in the powder so powder skis are still made long. You don't see anyone making a 190 length ski under 84mm wide this year. But every brand makes a 190+ length ski in waists bigger than 90mm.

If you are trying to make a sad attempt of referring to the notion that Reagan was actually a neoliberal economist, then you are sadly mistaken. It is a shame that people are allowed to use words when they don’t know what they mean. It is so obvious that you did not hear these words while sitting at a quality University or from a reputable text. Otherwise, you would not try to relate the consumer mentality with neoliberalism. Neoliberalism refers to elimination of national markets and the move toward a single global economy, whether that be a free market economy or not is not part of the standard interpretation. I would imagine you don't really know what true capitalism really is being as you are wasting your time on anthropology. If you want to learn about economics pick up some Friedman so you know a little bit about what you are saying.

As for the skis…good luck…you should go ask for this type of advice on TGR. These park rats won’t be much help.

 
skimasterflex and seanpistol know thier shit, and I'm pretty sure I can handle most any ski I'm put on...just trying to get get opinions from people who have RIDDEN either the Prophet 130, or the Thug...or other large skis so that I could try to narrow down a choice for a fat, verstile ski that'll kick ass.

It creates export based economies and developes states of underdevelopement in the third world to lower the costs of commodities in the US and Western Europe by deregulating the appropriation of materials and goods in poor countries throughout the rest of the world.

Dude, I have gone through almost the exact same debate as you have in this thread when I was trying to decide what ski. First I thought Prophets, then Gotama's, then JP's, then Prohpets again, but I always had the Maden' in the back of my mind. I picked up some Maden's last year at a REI, and the 189's are quite hefty. However, they seem to flex well, and supposedly perform better on more all-mountian terrain. While being a bit heavier, they can still rotate.

I've decided to go for some this season, because I know I'm not going to be skiing perfect powder every day, and while I do want to have a rediculous amount of fun in the powder stashes around my ski area, I know I'll have to ride them in crud and on groomers about half the time I ski. Thats why the Maden's rock. No other fat ski can perform as well as they do when you arent skiing powder. And yeah, I'll be looking around for a pair from last year as well, I'm actually less of a fan of the new graphics.

Anyways, I hope you consider what you are going to realistically be skiing when you decide what skis to get. While some may be amazing in powder, you dont want to have an impossible time controlling them when you dont have deep perfect snow.

I'm obviously coming in late to this conversation here, but I've skied a couple of the things you are thinking about (next years ANTs and Made'ns, and I own this years JP vs. Julians)

I'm 5'9" 175lb. Having skied all three of those, I am quite happy with what I have. I love going ridiculous fast and straight, and even though they are soft, the JPs haul because of the slim sidecut. The ANTs haul too, obviously, but actually want to turn a little more at high speed because they have a tiny bit more sidecut. The ANT is awesome, but for someone of your weight, the JP would be a better all around ski.

The Made'n is completely different. It is so much fun. Amazing flot, even at slow speed, and its awesome in the trees (soft + huge sidecut). It is not as good at speed, still doable with its length. Its also tons of fun in the park and to just generally screw around with.

If its between those 3, obviously I have a personal bias, but the JP is the best all around. It was a little trickier in the trees than I was used to (I also have 179 1st gen. pistols) but I got used to it.

I would definitely consider the prophet 100, and Gotama, or custom skis (But they may be pricy). However, unless you are getting a deal on a pair of something, I would wait and try and demo once the season starts. Ski as many as you can to really get an idea of what you want.
