ok i just bought a new mac and i was wondering if i should norton or any anti virus on it (im new to mac i know they cant get virus) but just for security should i
Macs can get viruses. there just isnt as many viruses made for mac because it isnt used as much as windows. I have a mac and I dont have any virus protection and ive been fine for a year and half. Just gotta watch what you download.
You are going to be super stoked on your new mac dude, I got one back in december after many years of a pc, it has been really easy to adapt to and is a lot more powerful... enjoy
as nomensteven said, there are no recorded mac viruses going around right now. but, if you use boot camp in pc mode you are open to all pc viruses regardless of what computer, so on your pc install anti-virus but on mac's it's pointless unless you piss off some hackers and get a personal attack from them
don't, i got it for free on my old comp so i did it for poops and laughs but it was really annoying, it always gave popups and took a long time to get rid of, it's annoying as fuck
thats sick bro i love my mac and i know everyone is saying be careful what you download which is true but don't stress it to much. i've been using limewire to download music for over a year and been totally fine, and it totally ruins my friends computers that have pc's. macs just kick ass
i got a mac used them since forever and i installed norton anti virus in like spetember and there were 2 viruses on my mac. idk specificaly what they were but they did nothing to my computer they were just like some files in a folder that i didnt know about.
dont know how they got there or what type of virus thing they were
probably weren't viruses, more likely that they were files that could have potentially been viruses. often if you download things like keygens etc they get identified as possible viruses and get quarantined when theres not anything wrong with them. but you gotta watch out with them cause some of them do contain viruses, so its a mixed bag.
I've been using PC's my entire life, I have yet to install an antivirus software and have yet to get a virus. It's not that hard not to be retarded. Combined with Firefox I only need to run Spybot Search And Destroy twice a year, and most of the time it's unneccesary too. Seriously, Norton and Mcafee and all those bullshit companies are only for people who are too fucking stupid to have the right to use a computer in the first place.
your so right. i havent gotten a virus or adware in a year. its just because im not fucking stupid. i dont serach up random porn sites, i dont download random cracks and programs, and i use firefox. if u just do that you won't have viruses.
safari is overall way more aesthetically approving and while it still does have its share of memory leaks (a problem of webkit not of safari) it is still not at bad as the leaks of firefox. If you get safari I recommend getting Saft, greasekit, and a few other input managers to suit your needs. Plus input managers are easy to write if you take the time to learn. Camino is good and as a former helper of camino I can say its made alot of progress, probably more than any other mac browser in the last 6 months.
1 - yes, a must cant believe its not included in mac already
2 - twitter = homo
3 - skype is good once in awhile
4-7 are good
8 - X-Chat Aqua or Irssi - if you use irc these are the good ones
9 - Text mate - best text editor out atm
10 - Awaken - turn your 2000$ mac into an alarm clock
11 - X11 good if you ever plan on doing anything advanced
12 - Little snitch - dont let your mac snitch, yo
My threads! I just bought my new Macbook - arrives monday or tuesday. So stoked on it, can't wait to start editing.
Got it with Final Cut Express 4 too. So Should be able to make some super sick edits without having to wait 12 hours for something to happen as I do on my PC.
The guy chucked in3 years apple care and a 15% discount on all the stuff I bought too. It's worth haggling if you get the chance.
