GoPro HD - A must have for every skier

I have the GoPro Hero Wide. I paid $150 for it. It's OK. Video is of decent quality, but the video always seems so distant, even when I try to get close ups of friends. Overall, I'd rate it a 6 out of 10...
My main complaint is the lack of any sort of remote. Always having to check to see if you recording or if your out of memory or battery dead is a PITA. I constantly have to take my helmet off, check the status and put it back on. Or go up to a friend and ask, is the "red light flashing?"
A simple audio feature that beeps loudly with different tones for things like, recording, running out of memory, battery dying, turning off/on, etc, would be nice.
There are times where just doing a "press and guess" will work, but I have had many of quality shots lost by lack of feedback. Example, at the Dumont cup I was riding behind wallish and a big crew of PROs bombing down a trail. The battery was just low enough to look like it was good to go, but I only got a couple seconds of video before it died...

I also am not a fan of the attachments. I've broken most of my mounts during half of my season last year. Sure you can buy new mounting kits, but some of the breaks were just from bad quality plastics and design...
Looks like the HD version has much better quality video from this edit...
You look like a total gaper wearing them. If your confident, it's no big deal, but when you get a ton of Joeys, moms and dads all going "Is that a camera on your head? "Does it take pictures" "Wow, it shoots video!!! How???" it gets old...
As long as you know you look stupid, and are super attractive to gappers (kinda like skinny jeans), it's an awesome camera :)
I broke down and got the P.O.V 1.5. Paid $420 for it. PM me for the deal...

^debbie downer on such a positive thread

thanks for your input though. my main gripe at first was the look. but I got over it...

To all EURO ppl !!

My GP HD should 've been delivered this week since it was to arrive in port by the beginning of this week...Sadly i didn't hear or see anything, so i called my importer and he said that ALL GO PRO HD SHIPMENTS TO EUROPE ARE HELD UP BY THE PORT CUSTOMS !!i don't know if this goes for shipments to every GP dealer in europe but it sure sounded like it was :( ...

:(
let's hope they release it any time soon !!!

If i'm looking for a camera to film some fun little mess around edits which would be better go pro hd of the flip hd camera

They got a newer countourhd 1080p now, I ordered that one cuz it goes good on the gogs, so you dont have to wear a helmet all the time skiing pow.

with an attached lcd screen do u think this camera could be used for primarily normal filming. maybe 20% helmet cam 80% normal filming. i know that defeats the purpose of gettin a helmet cam but im lookin for a new camera and this one is cheap, durable, and has great quality.

You don't have to wear it on your helmet. duuurrrrrrr. It comes with a strap and you wear it just like a headlamp. You look like a badass with it on not an idiot. If you are that worried about how you look skiing you should just quit. I just used mine for the first time yesterday. It's sick. It is ideal for POV shots not necessarily filming your friends cause it is so wide angle. I haven't shot in 1080 yet where the angle is only 120 degrees. At 720 the quality was sick and the camera takes sick pictures too. You don't even notice it on your head and there is little or no shake especially if your shredding soft snow. If your following someone you have to be closer than you would think at first. Overall I'd rate it a 9/10. I need to try to wear it on the side of my head and ride next to my brother so I can get much closer than following him. Overall for the price, quality, and ability to easily film yourself/others everyday of the year it is a no brainer.

Had the same sort of issues with the first cam - With the new battery pack, I've never had the cam even lose one bar of battery (out of 3) over a whole day's use. The beeps in this new cam are louder and it has one for starting video, stopping, finishing recording to the card, battery dying and turning off, and a few others. I agree, some different tones would be great, but the new system seems to work really well for me.

And really, if looking good is such an issue, that's just silly to me. Get sick shots, make sick edits, and no one will ever question looking dumb. Looking dumb has never crossed my mind after landing a backflip and thinking holy crap that shot is going to be soo sick. come on!

Also, they just released the HD Hero Naked - it doesn't come with as many mounts but still has what you need - waterproof housing, some stickies, and what not. It's priced at 259 so if you have the old GoPro stuff that'd be perfect.

Good to hear! These fixes alone would make me reconsider the HD version.
My first impression of my P.O.V 1.5 wasn't great. I had some issues with my video. Also the cord and brick were kinda a PITA. This is where the GoPro excels. The POV's brick was kinda large, but it was also pretty sweet to have a real-time preview of my angle and work.
The mounts on the GoPro had their quality issues, but the ability to change angles was much easier on the GoPro then the POV.
The goggle strap for the POV is sweet. I guess I could rig something up similar with my GoPro, but it would be a nice addition to their packaging.
I did get more complements v.s. strange looks on my POV. The gappers didn't swarm either :P
IMHO, the lipstick lens is better look then the camera head. I don't really care either way. If looks really bothered me, I wouldn't have rep'ed the GoPro all last year. Though I know it is a factor for some...
Can't wait to have conditions that make the video worthwhile... I need to take a trip to PNW....

I got the gopro hd and was trying to figure out if the chest mount strap would be better than helmet mounted. Since it seems like the helmet mounted comes out angled too much towards the ground. Only thing about the chest footage that Ive seen is that when the knees come up on airs it looks weird. One other thing, what do u you guys think is best, 960 or 720 p?

Has anyone tried mounting it in front of one of their bindings? I think that would make a really cool and interesting angle.

^^LCD screen is an add on from my understanding. I took my go pro hd out on my quad and rallied some trails. The quality was really awesome when you plug it into an hd tv and watch it. Colors are real vivid.
