Because sleds weight 500+ pounds, plus a 200lb person on top of it. Puts way more stress on the snowpack than just a skier alone. All that weight can stress down into the weak layers deeper and wider that just a person alone, thus causing more avalanches.

Plus, snowmobiles cover WAY more terrain in a day than a skier can, putting themselves in avalanche terrain much more often.
