Goodbye Vimeo...

End of an era. In the process of downloading every video i have pretty much ever made before impending doom. Vimeo is really cracking down on their copyright infringement laws. I have seen in the last week or two a few homies accounts get deleted because of copyrighted music. We are going to lose a lot of great ski edits because of it...

quick someone who has good internet download all of the trashparty's channel

this post is making me so nervous I'm checking their page like every few hours now

It was a general inevitably, you can honestly blame Vimeo for doing a shit job with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. They started off at this indie site that got too big to be "cool" anymore and they had to crack down on music or they were going to get destroyed.

Music rights in general pose a threat to all ski videos and TBH there isn't much that can be done to change it.

How does Newschoolers protect against it?

I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying. Vimeo didn't have any sort of system to flag copyrighted music, it was a "cool" site that let people do whatever they wanted. Now they're huge and their copyright system is like YouTubes, aka if you don't have rights you're gonna get flagged, but unlike YouTube, Vimeo iust deletes videos while YouTube has many different options for people with the artists/labels.

so glad I stopped using and paying for Vimeo years ago. The interface alone is awful, and the player usually sucks as well. Sad to see so many awesome edits getting deleted because Vimeo never got their shit together.

Does NS not have to deal with these issues because this is a small site or do you do DMCA takedowns?

If we received a dmca takedown on a video we would take it down.

yeah wtf alot of my videos now are gone. Don't even know where alot of the original files are....fucking blows

recently with no warning Vimeo deleted one of my videos (so far...) and it was 9 years old without a backup, after a lot of back and forth emails saying theres nothing they can do, they finally gave me a one time use download link that expired 5 min after it was clicked haha. Good riddance Vimeo

Yikes... did they notify you after it was deleted at least? Or did you notice it was gone yourself?

I just emailed them asking if there's a way to batch download all 236 videos on my channel. Don't need the original file but their HQ converted version would be nice. I doubt they have a way to do this, but it would be nice to save my old ass shitty videos to look back on in the future. I went through a few of them last night from 11 years ago and they have songs by AOTP, Jedi Mind, etc. Maybe not the first videos to get pulled based on the size of those artists... but I'm sure eventually they will get to them :/

damn dude! it's so wack that they do this. I lost so many of my first edits when bright cove did a similar thing years ago. Hope you get all the edits backed up before anything happens to them you got some good ones on there!

Beat making skiers on soundcloud are the answer

This has been a big thing in the music video world as well. I've had homies have their work on official productions taken down in the past few weeks because they don't own licensing rights for the video they write and execute with (sometimes) their own pocket money. Say someone brings their $50k camera package on to a MV for $200 and doesn't get a DP rate because 'that was the budget.' what if that video blows up and the label makes $2,000 on the ad revenue and another $1,000 on streaming spikes? The crew gets nothing and effectively payed for some else's success. This is why unions are fantastic.

Sorry this was unrelated I'm just sad about all this

Damn, really?? And with Youtubes being shite as well, we're gonna need a new platform then..

Crazy suggestion but just hear me out... newschoolers

I started using vimeo not long ago, so I haven't noticed any issues yet. Thanks for sharing, I'll check it out!

This, its ironic that a VIDEO platform privileges the music rights first in theory. I could see someone making a fair use argument that when you shoot AND edit a beautiful video with music underneath it that the new work is substantially original when compared to a flat audio file. But yeah, music industry has been lawyered up so damn hard for so long, I do think music artists should be compensated, I like YouTubes approach with some music rights holders, they don't delete the video, they try to monetize the music for the artist and let the video stand as an advertisement in a sense.

That being said I only use rights cleared music now on ANYTHING I make, gotta future proof that media.
