Good Knee Braces....I need your opinions from experience

Ok so I have a Townsend Premier knee brace...and after using it for two winters I've had enough. It sucks. It's not very comfortable & it's always sliding down my leg a little. I'm looking into getting a new brace and I was wondering what you boys/girls wear. I know there's plenty of you that have had acl/mcl/medial meniscus surgery. I've been looking at the CTi2 by Innovation Sports. looks pretty good, but it'll suck to go out and have another custom brace made then not like it. thanks

stowek2: yep..theres a few skilled ones...a good number who love it and want to progress, then a bunch of morons that are trying to impress the boys by wearing as little clothing as possible and as much make-up as possible on the hill

SLTskier: yeah however im one that trys to progress and impress the boys :-)

When I was filming the bonus footy for 2Track's Versys, Chris Turpin thanked Don-Joy for their knee braces. I can safely say after seeing what Chris was up to all year that the knee brace is money. He said it was super comfee. I don't know what kind of cash your looking at but this link might put you on the right track.

i have the cti2, it is really comfy without as much padding, cuz they form it to your leg, but it is pretty expensive, my insurance paid for mine or i couldnt have paid for it. the chick that fitted mine said the don joys bend easily cuz they are metal,

Bob: i want Jon's autograph

me: i will see what i can do

Bob: u grab the swedish bastard by the ears and tell him bob dake wants his autograph and hand him my card

i have a breg tradition (? not sure of model, i think that's it).... i like it.... it's comfy if you set it up right. it's a bitch if you don't. but the big thing that stops the sliding down the leg problem is tightening up the strap right below your knee. then tighten all the other ones after that, so that it's almost uncomfy. walk around for a min or two, and then go ski. your leg will get used to having the brace tighter, and it will brace your knee better too. i use mine while i'm teaching little kids too, and it's been great.

the brace i have now was 1250 and insurance paid 1150 of that. i'm hoping i can get my insurance to cover a big part of this one. i have a different insurance plan/policy/company now. i think they're all pretty expensive.

someone said the don joys bend easily?

Yeah... See im gettin confused.. If you had the surgery( I had acl recon. and meniscus repair) isnt ur knee back to normal? that what my physical therapist tells me, that a brace is for if you slip er something and twist ur knee but not really needed all the time.... but what do you guys feel like after a day of skiing with the brace Vs. a day without the brace.. this will be my first season back after surgery

its not fully back to normal...i tore the shit out of it. the brace is almost like a seatbelt or a helmet. just there in case you land the wrong way. prevents the knee from twisting in that shitty position again.

yeah. i feel more comfortable with it. i've skied without it, but in the back of my mind i'm afraid i'm going to screw it up. i always wear my brace when skiing, skating, playing racquetball, tennis, and basketball. (well almost always with those last three sports.)

Skeeordye: no, you can't - it depends on how you set it.

I'd say go with the Don-Joy! I have some experience with sports medicine, and that's definitely what I'd recommend. But at the same time, if you want to ski, be fucking careful, and do some reconditioning of your leg muscles (mainly quads). A good strong knee supported by strong muscles is the best thing to have - and don't wear the brace all the time, just when you ski (unless you've _just_ been operated)...

About wearing the brace, I just had surgery last march, and I've talked to my doctor and he says I should wear it this season, especially if i'm not gonna take it easy, and then not need to wear it after that... but I know some dr's are more or less conservative than him. Also, I've heard that the brace can, in a way, weaken the knee cause it's not working as hard when you're skiing to stabilize itself. I don't know if that's true, have any of you heard about that?

hmm interesting. i was told to always wear it when skiing and during other strenous or contact sports. muscle conditioning i do...it helps a ton.

I have Pro by Breg. Its to keep my knee cap in place (I donno if thats what your looking for)and just generally keep things good in there. I wore it one and a half soccer seasons, very nice

I had an acl reconstruction and meniscus fixing 3 years ago and Ive worn my townsed rebel brace since then. Ive had a couple of days where I forgot it and I def didnt go as hard, I always knew at the back of my mind that I didnt want to go through all that pain again.

My fixed leg is still weaker than the other no matter what I do to strengthen it. The brace doesnt really support it or anything but there have been about 4 or 5 times in the last 3 years that Ive done some thing really dumb and felt it tweak to the point and then not go any further because the brace stopped it - hyperextension is what your acl is spposed to stop and its damn easy to do eh. Also busting to the side its waaay more protective

My brace doesnt slip at all. Do you have yours set up properly and have the right size? Like someone else said do the strap under the knee first then the 2 on top then the one above your knee and then the next one then the one on top of your thigh,

Also I usually wear an elastic bandage underneah it, you know the ones that look like tight sox without the foot part? stops any itching esp when hiking (my mums a nurse so she hooked me up)

When I got mine I looked at lots (insurance paid for it so no worries!) and just be careful at the way the hinge moves because some of them arent independant from the brace and can end up moving all over the place

right thats enough from me!

good luck
