Good knee brace?

hey guys i was wondering if you could recommend good knee braces to get, i blew my knee out and i want to get a good high quality and durable one that would hold up well skiing.
 
good knee braces are kinda like ski boots, you should get them fitted if you really want them to work well. Don Joy's and CTi's are worth a look. I dunno about asterisk though, they're more of a moto type brace and are pretty big and bulky.
 
CTi! I knew I was forgetting one.

I wasn't sure about Asterisk for skiing either but I've actually heard a few good things from skiers about them if you want mega bang protection... Which I'm not gonna hate on, knees to rails = THE WORST.

CTi also has this knew feature for ski boots. From the website: Rod and piston mechanical attachment used to link the CTi brace to a ski boot, aiding in the prevention of rotational injuries.

BINGO! That'd be my first choice.

my friend blew his out and got one of the Don Joy ones, im forgetting which one, but he doesnt complain about it at all
 
I've been using one I got from townsend design everyday I ride for like 4 years now. They sent a rep out to my house to take my measurements and custom made it. It's super comfy and does not move around at all. I highly recommend them. Also if you're having surgery there's a solid chance you can get your health insurance to pay for it. Something to look into for sure.
 
my buddy and I both rock asterisk knee braces and i feel like super man when wearing these! i could ski all day zero knee pain!
 
this is a great thread...what are we looking at price wise...ive heard upwards of a grand and that they are not covered by insurance...can someone back this up?
 
My DonJoy has saved me at least a dozen times this year. I have major issues with ACL, MCL, and PCL, which hasn't been repaired yet. Multiple times I have crashed, and twisted by knee, both skiing and snowboarding. And I have felt the Donjoy brace my knee enough that it didn't blow out again.
 
Well... that's depending on your insurance. MOST insurance companies will cover the full or almost full cost IF you have ALREADY had a severe knee injury such as ACL. (Which is fucked IMO.) If you want to get braces as preventative, then no, your insurance will NOT cover it and you will have to pay the full cost. Which is around $1000- $15000 per brace for custom fit.
 
The type of knee brace you get should depend precisely on what type of injury/instability you have.

Most knee braces are designed to keep your knee in alignment when you flex your leg. These types of brace typically protect against your knee buckling in (if you've medial instability) or out (lateral instability). I (well, my physio) had a look at some of these after trashing a bunch of my cartilage and meniscus (for medial instability).

My Dad has a knee brace but he has a trashed ACL and his knee brace has a different function to the ones I was looking at.

You really need to see an Orthopedic specialist or a top notch Physio who is experienced with such devices. They'll advise you what to get. In the same way that NS is not a good place to ask how to perform surgery on yourself it is also not a good forum for diagnosing and treating a knee problem.

 
I blew out my ACL last Jan, had surgery in Sept and am now just starting to back to skiing/regular activities. I got my brace through my physio, custom Don Joy Defiance III, short cuff model for skiing, which also happens to be the official knee brace of the US Ski team. My work insurance (Canadian) covered the whole shebang. Through my physio it was $1450 for a custom brace and $650/700 for an off the shelf model (s/m/l). He sized me an everything but the good part at least with Don Joy is that within the first year of getting your brace, if it no longer fits properly (i.e. get fat, slim down, or bulk up) they will send you a new proper fitting brace.
