Good kids, depression and influences, a govy tragedy

May is a big month for the small town of government camp. Skiers and snowboarders come from all over the world to crash on couches, party and ride. Lots of kids too, kids with ambition and kids running from places with none.

And every town has its good, bad and ugly scenes. Government camp is no different, here you can find any drug you can name and dodge accountability like theres no tomorrow or become a world class athlete in a mere matter of decades. Kids ages 18-27 love it here, its heaven on earth for athletes, ski bums and bums too.

There is a core group in every ski town and in govy, the ski season is 12 months if you make the most of conditions. A seasonal worker can easily extend their stay.

The core groups that prioritize partying and drugs have a lot of influence over the less motivated kids during the “mud season”(august-october for mt hood, may-january everywhere else). And with blurred lines of when your season can start and end, its easy to let the off-season become your year round night life, sucking all the early morning pow turn energy away.

From timberline freestyle closing day in august to reopening in December, one has exactly 4 months and some change to ruin their life. And boy oh boy does one have the resources to do so if they get sucked into the wrong scene.

this summer I met some of the most relaxed, down to earth people I ever met. 3 months later, some are unrecognizable, their minds completely overpowered by their immediate desires and temptations.

Winter is here and some have gained a literal 15 years on their age and can’t sleep, eat or socialize without the aid of (somehow decriminalized) dangerous drugs.

Being in the scene is half the problem. Kids smart enough to see trends in health and moderate themselves are a threat to the validity of the core group’s drug habits. And the second these good kids try to give their “”””””””friends””””””””””” any actual love or concern for their health, they get exiled. Drug addicts are not your friends, and if you were friends before their addiction you are now enemies, really, really serious enemies sometimes. The only emotions an addict can feel for you at that point are hate, envy and jealousy of your superior discipline and maturity. They can drag you down but you can’t bring them back up.

government camp has a massive wealth of positivity and knowledge and one has to go out of their way to even find anything other than that.

Be warned, you are not experimenting with the heavy drug scene by partying on the off season, you are signing up to a literal gang, once you sober up or stop partying to go ride, you get harrased and seen as a potential snitch, the scene then tries to start a feud as it works great against potential snitches, everyone knows cops prefer to see feuds play out in entertaining ways

so take my advice, practice settling conflicts while you can, practice being extremely rational, practice assertiveness and most importantly, practice not taking shit from anyone.

Don’t get involved in the first place, just don't do drugs, don't hang out with resentful people. They may be edgy and entertaining at first but how they talk about other people when you are around is exactly how you will talk about you when you are not.

What kinda drugs we talking bout op?

if it's anything similar to a couple hours north of the border; it's opiates and cocaine.

also meth.

all the drugs essentially. A shit load of drugs run through that area on their way to Canada as well, which probably doesn't help matters.

This is how i feel about those "vaccine abusers". They already shooting up their 3rd shot. Addictive bunch

Just read it this finally.

Honestly this is some bullshit. I hear a lot of blaming these people and those people. Ski towns and most towns honestly have a party scene, drinking scene, drug scene.

There's a lot of people that hang out and party, there's a lot of people that don't. A lot of people don't even drink much, and focus on riding. Some people party and ride a ton. Some people party and don't ride.

If being around any drug use weirds you out, don't hang out with those people. It's totally fine. If being around people drinking all the time bothers you don't hang out at Charlies. Camp with people that aren't partying. Or if you have a spot, hang out with people you align with more. Go out and hike, go to the many skateparks around Oregon.

It's easy to sit on a high horse and complain about all these people and how they're the problem. Idk man, I'm just not about it.

From reading it it sounds like friends wanted to do other things, you got weird and judgey, and they didn't want to hang out any more.

This is so overly dramatic it's kind of weird honestly.

Hopefully you're just bored and trolling or something. Otherwise I don't even know.

This thread reeks of "People seem to be having fun, I feel weird about it. Some of them drink or use drugs, I don't like that but I can't handle being chill or finding new friends. I'm going to judge them and and be a dick so they don't want to hang out, and then I'm going to rant about how everyone is a drug addict and an asshole".

Idk what happened, who your friends are, but this is some bullshit.

This whole thing is vague. There's drugs and various scenes everywhere. What kind of drugs are we talking about. Opiates? There's been an issue with those in every small town or big town in America.

Drug decriminalization is great. Prison is not rehab. Putting people in prison for drug possession actually does ruin their lives. Sure there's the "i went to jail and got sober" then there's everyone else that went to prison and got a record for drug possession and struggled to find a good job. Not to mentiom what drugs you use is your own business.

Have some personal accountability. I've had several friends die. And some get off pills/dope, some still not so much but again, making it illegal doesnt help.

At this point people know opiates are dangerous af. It still happens, you can slip into things real easliy if you stsrt dabbling in the wrong things with the wrong people, but this is legit everywhere.

If you feel sketched out by people don't hang out with them, maybe don't stay in Govy year round if that's going to be a problem with you.

This seems to be about a very specific situation while being very generic. Dont do drugs. This is how it will be like.

No context whether OPs friends are legit addicted to opiates or other drugs or OPs friends do cocaine every couple weeks and he yells at them so they don't want to hang any more.

No need for resources for mental heslth issues or addiction, just get rid of decriminalization and put people and jail. That should weed out the people that temped you and the drugs will go away.

Jails being overcrowded, do we build back better jails?

A bunch of very naive people in this thread.

"Being in the scene is half the problem. Kids smart enough to see trends in health and moderate themselves are a threat to the validity of the core group’s drug habits. I mean straight up what is that. Said people are going to keep doing they're thing, you aren't a threat to it. If you don't like it find friends you align with, thats life.

The don't do drugs rhetoric is weird. The, everyone is all fucked up, unrecognizable, and aged 15 years vibe is meh.

3 days and no update on anything.

I get it, maybe you and a bunch of people reading this thread are still crazy sheltered. Maybe haven't even been around weed really. Or maybe are used to a bit of drinking or weed, but if they see any other drugs they freak out and make threads like these.

Some people will drink and do drugs, some people won't, do whatever the hell you want, tattoo straight edge tatts on your hands and go to hardcore shows.

Idk, just saying a bunch of y'all are naive at best. You will almost guaranteed encounter drugs at some point in your life. You don't have to hang out with those people, you don't have to be friends.

But whatever OP isn't going to respond and the people downvoting probably won't post.

You don't think that you should try to help friends that you see going down a destructive path? Maybe I'm wrong, but if somebody feels the need to be high all the time there is other stuff that they need help with and just letting them handle it on their own and cutting ties is disaster waiting to happen. Maybe I'm naive as well though since I've only ever watched from the outside, it's just a bummer when you see friends go down a path that you have no idea if they'll make it out or not.

It depends a lot on the situation and there's nothing close to specifics here. A lot of times it will be people partying a little little bit, and friend with whatever good intentions comes in all dramatic about it. If there's actually a serious problem talking to them could help, but coming in judgey is def the wrong angle. Sure people might tell you to fuck off regardless, but if you come in hot and judgey it absolutely won't accomplish anything but make them want to dostance themselves from you. And if they actually have a problem definitely won't help that.

You can still be friends with people snd not support everything they do. Really depends on the situation and you as a person. I was just visiting a friend that probably does more blow than she should. That said she's got full time job. Is doing well. Both "who am i to tell her" otherwise but also that wouldn't help anything.

Idk i think some people come in naive, misread situations, approach confrontations badly, and then get mad that those friends dipped out on them.

I just think the "don't do drugs" vibe is ultra naive. And as far mentioned about people misreading things and coming in hot, there are plenty of people who are still freaked out if they see weed or mushrooms that people can hang with.

Both question of 1. Is it any of my business and 2. What with this accomplish. Are a good place to start. And if going to approach them coming in calm and not from a place of judgement. Come in judgey and you'll find people resenting you most of the time.

Idk that's how i feel about it anyway. Again hard with no context from OP that could vary from my friends smoke weed and drink sll the time to, my friends do molly sometimes, to my friends are heavily addicted to pills and dope and are stealing shit from people in town.

I strongly agree

I mean OP isn't that far off Govy is one fucking wild place where a lot of people are running from something.
