radeon 100% go for the 9600.. if you wanna spend a lil more, go for the 9800 pro

NO, go with a Radeon X700 or a Geforce 6800, both of which can be gotten for under 150 and are AGP. You will be dissapointed if you buy a 4 year old card like a 9600 or even a 9800.

ya, for sure. for higher end, it hurts me to say this, but Nvidia is better. for what you are looking at, ATI is MUCH MUCH better. I have the top of the line ATI card and the only reason I didnt buy an Nvidia instead is because I found a special deal on www.tigerdirect.com

if you have $350, I highly suggest buying the ATI X850 Platnum edition.

but you dont have that I guess.

get this if you have PCI E (only in newer computers):

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1535691&Sku=P262-3032

if you have a slightly older computer, or a cheaper newer one, it pains me to say this (boo nvidia) but get this:

shit, i realized both mine are the same link. im too lazy and sick (literally) to find it again. look for a nVidia 6600 GT. its the most band for your buck right now, but it may be slightly above your price range.

yea nvidia 6600 GTs are pretty sick for the price, saw a gigabyte on newegg for 141. 6800s will run a little more like 160, but it's about the right performance increase for the cost. ati x800s and sometimes x800 pros if you find a deal. if you want to go cheap, a 9800 pro off ebay will play any game at minimum 1024x768 and can be bought for about $80.

if you take any of those cards with fans your computer will sound like a jet engine; way too loud formy standards. I have a radeon 9200se and i've been able toplay every game with it.

No Props!

what the hell are you talking about!?!^

ya its a little loud, but its not that loud and its totally worth it. I wouldnt spend a penny on a card that dated right now. you could find better cards with small fans or no fans thought too. if it is really that much of a concern, you can get aftermarket fans by companies like Arctic-Cooling that are much more quiet.

i bought my computer almost 3 years ago and it still has the same graphics card in it because i haven't needed to upgrade it. by no means am i saying to buy the same card that i have, i'mjust saying that it isn't worth it to buy a 400$ card.

No Props!

excuse my ignorance, but how would one find out if their computer has pci e or not?

if your computer isn't too old then i wouldn't worry about it. a pci is an expansion slot. all you have to do is take out your old card and put your new one in the same place.

No Props!

k, thanks. i think im going to go with the all-in-wonder 9800 pro. 160 canadian.

Hey can u guys help me now/?? I have a somewhat shitty dell 2400 demension desktop. We upgraded our ram so im at 640 i think and we have pentium 4 2.19 mhz. My graphics card is hored so i cant play CS:S or Battlefield 2. I was thinking of buying a ati 9800pro. First are these games that much doper than like CZ. and Will shit work out with the pc i have. Is the rest of my PC up to snuff if you will... thanks

hate it or love... little John's on top...

^o and I was thinking 9800pro not because i know what im doing, only because ive been reading forums and i hear its good for the price and will run those games

hate it or love... little John's on top...

two choices now. the all-in-wonder 9800 pro for 160 canadian or the x700 pro for 190 canadian

heh CZ is on HL engine whereas CS:S is HL2. huge difference graphics wise. 7 years difference. but anyways if you're going to upgrade, make sure you have an AGP slot (for systems older than about a year) or a PCI-E slot, which is NOT the same as PCI. PCI-E is fairly new, so if your computer is yesterdays shit, don't worry just check for AGP.

you can either just look for yourself or google your computer for info.

uh... fuck. My PC apparently doesnt have an AGP port, does this mean, I wont be playin any new games unless i get a new pc...?

dude i'm tellin ya, i played battlefield with a 9600, and now i'm upgraded to 9800 pro. the 9600 was sufficient, so i mean, you'll be fine. save the 30 bucks. you don't absolutely need to overkill it. it's all pretty much in your connection anyways. if you get shitty throughput, even if you have the best of graphics cards, that shit is gonna lag you out of your mind. even with a shitty card, if you have a good connection, you'll be fine.

i'm sayin 9800 fosho

stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

no! he is talking about PCI E. you should be able to find out if you have pci express, agp, or just pci with the program found here: http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php

from there, you can look for a videocard, I suggest tigerdirect.com
