Good film colleges

hey, i wanna look for sum good colleges to study film. i wanna be a producer or director or sumthing like that, but i dont know any good colleges really. any idesa? where have sum well known peaple in the film industry gone?

okay, its like this. you're probably very anxious to become a producer or a director. the thing is you need to get an education. i know i sound like a nagging mom, but thats exactly what i'm doing - getting an education first. you can't make very good movies if you haven't a clue about sociology, anthropolgy, english, philosophy, etc. if you don't know about the way things work, then you can't possibly articulate yourself properly. if you think i'm full of shit, then pick up a copy of 'how to get into film school' they say same fucking thing on the very first page. if you still aren't interested in my advice then you have one of two options, an arts school like SCAC in san fran, or a more traditional approach like at USC or NYU. film is a disgustingly cutthroat industry. besides the business aspect, you need to be fucking dedicated and you better have some gift that the next guy/girl doesn't. you're never going to make it if you aren't unbelievably passionate about filmmaking. not to bring down your dreams or anything, but these are all realities that you should know. i personally won't be heading off to film school until after i have a few undergraduate degrees. right now i'm studying english, because writing is crucial to becoming a director - in hollywood and the indie scene alike, they won't give you a second unless you walk out of film school with a nasty script for a film idea - its just the way things are done. honestly pick up that book i was talking about.

A large number have gone to school in new york. If skiing is important to you, then look into Montana state University. It has a really good film department, which is suprising. I think there utah has some as well.

I agree with alpinecowboy, I dont mean to shatter your dreams, but the chances of you 'making it' are very slim. Going to school in NYC wont garentee you shit. If you are content with the fact that you might just be a poor camera-man for the rest of your life, then go for it.

well im a sophmore, so i still have quite sum time till i go to college. im just looking for colleges to look into. i do know it is a nasty business also. thatts why im gonna try to prepare myself as much as i can. possibility i si wont be a director or producer or anything like that. but actually, being anything in the film business is what id love to do

Well if its what you are passionate about, then go for it. Lucas went to Univesity of southern cali , steven spielberg went to school at cali state , but I dont think he studied film. (I learned alot of useless facts in my film class). As long as you are realistic about your goals, then go for it.

NYU, Yale, but alpine and bigsky are right. A well rounded education is more important than where you go. People only care if you're good. If you're good and went to Bumfuck State, people will still see your movies. If you're shitty and went to somewhere well known, people will not go see your movies.

B) Vancuver Film School (great for skiing anyway) I am looking to go there, but I want to do more of the computer/special affects and less directiong and shit.

Also I don;t know how good they are but they cirtanly get there name out, Full Sail in florda cirtanly seems good. and same with Sevanna School of Art and Design. If you go to Sevanna, they have general education too...

north east (the ones I looked into) emerson, RIT has a very VERY well put together program, I just hated the campus. NYU is of course good. a lot of small ones around.

as for the ability to make it, that's one of the main reasons I'm in mechanical engineering instead of film.

i am a junior this year and this summer i am going for a week to the new york film academy. it looks like it will give me more of an idea of what to expect. it also looks like you can get a lot more done there, a lot faster and a lot cheaper, than you would at a 4 year university.

go to a big school so you can double major. ANd the thing about getting an education, almost every school has gen. ed. courses you have to take, like sociology and crap. I'm atteneding the colorado film school through cu denver so I can get the fine arts degree and a business degree. also don't pick the wrong mojor. I started out as a rec major and I wasted a lot of time and money just realizing it sucked. So now I gotta do the summer school crap to make up lost time.

Van film school huh... Uvic is really the 'drama/music/things related to the editing and development of drama and music' place around here. Might want to look into it. Plus you have Mount Washington on the island, and that doesn't hurt. Plus it's a pretty laid-back place.

I'm going to my community college to get my educational shit outta the way...science, math, english...then after two years at the CC...then im transfering to a more powerful university such as NYU, USC, or VFS

nyu and usc are probably your best bets because you're right where most of the industry is and can develop connections and whatnot. also, the whole 'making it' thing depends on your definition of 'making it,' like whether you want to make big bucks or make artsy independent films.

i just got into savannah college of art and design for their summer 'rising star' program, yes very exciting. from what i hear they have a video department. and SCAD is one of the number one art colleges in the country, so that might help.

And it makes me see, every puff that I breathe, potent herbs and leaves could ease the world . . .

alpinecowboy is absolutely right. and its also amazing how many kids who get into these good film schools and go in completely blind without any experience. Todd Richards, the awesome director of all our favs road trip and old school to name 2, he went to the NYU film school and he said all the poor saps were trying to write really good scripts but were only 19-20 years old at that point and hadn't really experienced life enough to be able to write something that really came from heart and lacked any artistic aspect. Thats why Todd decided to do documentaries in college and make a name for himself, he waited until after college to started making cinema style flicks. There are so many elements to consider when you venture into the filmmakers world. I hope the best of luck to you though bro. Just keep it real and put style into your films. just make them yours.

my school, RIT, has an excellent filming program, but I think it is hard to get into...for the skiing in the area, its mediocre, but pa isnt too far away...

 
The guy who wrote road trip and old school was talking about writing movies with an artistic aspect? What a joke. I'd rather take advice from my dog than that guy. Besides, Keats did a pretty good job writing in his early 20s... on the whole though, that probably is good advice despite the source.

film is basically a buttfuck degree that wont get you anywhere in life anyway, so dont sweat what school to go to because as soon as an employer sees 'film school' on your resume, it gets slam dunked into the shredder.

hell, alot of directors these days are do nothings anyway...between cinematographers/screenwriters/crew...90 percent of directors just yell action and whine alot...obviously thats not the case with everyone...but im a firm disbeliever that you have to have a wealth of life experience to do film school...i mean you really think people making a buttload of money doing music videos know shit about the world? maybe, but they dont need to

The Art Institutes can have good film programs depending on which one you go to...

yea i said i got into savannah, but its a summer honors program not actualy college, even tho its college classes. i don't want to go there for collge i want to go out to colorado or new york but they have an amazing fashion design school and thats what i want to do so i might end up going there. i am going there this summer for fashion design tho, i am very excited!!
