i have several hundred songs on my itunes, few of them are classical. i've been listening to classical all my life, however my mind has gone retarded and i can't remember very many pieces. please help me. oh and please include the composer.

so far i have: appalachian spring, pachabell canon, and...oh wait thats it.

song of the week to download: 'Streets Of London' by Ralph McTell

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman : God has a hard on for Marines, because we kill everything we see. He plays His games, we play ours. To show our appreciation for so much power, we keep heaven packed with fresh souls. God was here before the marine corps, so you can give your heart to Jesus, but your ass belongs to the corps.

damn, it's been so long since i played piano (laugh if you will) but i believe my favorite composer was Dvorak(?). Lizst (Liszt maybe?) was good too. that's just piano, though. i liked the ''darker'' classical music though, i think that's why i like dark drum&bass so much now

Abba Zabba, you my only friend

depends what kind of classical you like. as with any other genre there are thousands of different styles within it. i.e. different time periods, instruments, etc.

there's the obvious mozart, beethoven, vivaldi, stravinski, chopin, etc. just personal preference i guess. i played violin and piano when i was younger, and i love vivaldi but that's just me.

my favorites:

chopin nocturns

chopin anything else you can find, but particularly the ballades, preludes, barcolles, and scherzos

look up a peice called 'widmung' (also called 'dedication' by schuman. this is another one of my favs

if youre looking for more orchestral look up scheherazade by nicholai rimsky korsikov. also look up 'the hebrides overture' by mendelsshon. mendelsshons violin concerto is fabulous as well.

schuberts seranade for strings is beautiful if you get a good arangement. beethovens 9th symphony is good. saint-sans 'danse macabre' is really good. debussy and ravel are a little different, but look for debussys arabesque and clare de lune. ravels 'jeaux d'eau' and 'pavane for a dead princess' are beautiful.

look for gabriel faure's pavane and samuel barbers adagio for stings. also look for liszt's 'sospiro' and 'liberstraum' these are the most mello liszt peices you will find. the rest of his stuff is pretty lound and hyper. (if you want an upbeat liszt piano piece, get 'la campanella' it freaking rocks your socks off.

look for sebalius' 'waltz triste', his violin concerto, and 'finlandia'

another beautifull peice is ralph vaughn williams 'variants on dives and lazurus'

those are some that i like, just off the top of my head, that would get you started.

-you think you can take us on... you and your cronies-

As far as I'm concerned the best solo pieces ever are Paganini's 24 caprices for violin. The 24th is absolutely amazing. Being a clarinetist, I'm somewhat biased, but I'm a big fan of Weber's Clarinet Concerto. However, many of the names mentioned are great. Mainstays like the Moonlite Sonata are great, but there are so many other composers worth listening to. And to whoever it was above, Vivaldi is great.

there's some piece, i can't remember who it's by or what it's called (real good, i know) but it's a duet and one person reads it the normal way and the other person stands directly opposite and reads it that way and it sounds good when played together. anyone know what i'm talking about?

Ski Hobo, I agree, the 3rd movement is the best reason to listen to/play that piece, and it's too often overshadowed by the 1st movement.

Happy 250th birthday to Mozart (Jan 27th)

think any "pop" musician in the 20th century will be celebrated on their 250th birthday?

Mahlers 8th symphony is brilliant, and as far as an AMAZING guiar concerto, check out Rodrigo's Concierto Aranjuez (get the recording with Narcisio Yepes playing)

I would like to add Uccelini's violin sonatas to this list. I got a recording of them for christmas along with a couple of other CDs and they're soooo good.

Vivaldi is for little fairy boys.

That's just my opinion through my experience with playing with many orchestra's and wind symphonies.

My personal favorite is Shastakovich, because all his stuff is amazingly dark yet tremendously powerful.

Also Beethoven's Egdmund Overture is the only Beethoven that's not over played and is actually his best work in my opinion.

Nimrod variations by Edward Elgar are also very moving.
