alright, so for my major english assignment, i have to read two books and write an essay comparing them. now heres where you come in, i went to the library and realized everything i saw was either one of those ridiculously corny teen books, or one of those ridiculously long adult books, or ridiculously awesome kids books, which i am not allowed to read. can anyone reccomend me a good somewhat interesting SHORT book, it has to be a story not a long essay or something. please help me i am desperate. if there is one that has to do with skiing or something that would be even better. thank you kindly.

lord of the flies! my brother's class did it in 9th grade so its not a little kids book plus i heard it was really good AND it is extremely short!!!

'who wants to put the screws in?'

'i do!'

'no i do, my dad is a mechanic so i bet i am a lot better at stripping and screwing then you are!!!'

'ahhh, my ski just won't turn!'

'hmm..... have you tried turning it?'

^ yeah but it's so damn hard to understand the meaning behind the story. You need Coles notes for that one.lol. 2 books huh? Uh my brother has to do that exact same thing. What school do you go to? anyways...get some classic books or something like Robin Hood or something. Those work.

Of Mice and Men is SUPER_DEE_DUPER short and is pretty good... Animal Farm is pretty good and short too... Catcher in the Rye is really good...

By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept is really short... i dunno any other ones... its always best to do a classic with something contemporary or thats what our teacher told us for the same assignment!

Check out Edward Abbey. He writes a lot about the American Southwest and many of the adventures that can be had there. Be prepared for a strong go environment-corporate america sucks kind of attutude. My favorite was 'The Moneky Wrench Gang' Some people went on all kinds of eco-terrorism-esqe adventures. It's also got some R rated scenes, so that's always fun.

most adult books are pretty arousing

The Perks of Being A Wallflower, my favorite book, ever. Catcher in the Rye and Great Gatsby are good as well.

1984 by George Orwell and Farenheit 51. Classics and both based on Negative Utopia. You can write volumes comparing the two views on the same thing.

brave new world, is a good utopia book. The whole time, almost everybody is good looking, and they have orgies and take drugs constantly. Then my english teacher says, 'now why is this the anti-utopia'. Fuck bitch, i would rather live there then on this fucking shithole!

the hobbit. not as long as lotr, but just as good. i still say read one of the lotr books (or the whole story) too... the lenght doesn't matter when you get into it (finshed the whole novel - all three books - in 3 weeks... and i'm a slow reader)

Night, by Elie weisel. it is about the halocaust and how a jewish boy goes from camp to camp. its sad but very interesting. its also a true story and is about 120 pages long, and very hard to set down, you just keep reading, it goes by really fast

one flew over the cuckoos nest was really good. if you like sci fi read enders game. catch 22 i liked also. and most of the other books in this thread..

if you like scifi or if you don't read Enders Game that is such a sick book, like really really good. umm Blood Meridian if you like bloody western books.

Catch 22 is great, but somewhat long

The Outsider is a fast read (NOT THE OUTSIDERS!!! SO BAD!)

Of Men and Mice is also a classic and short

I loved 1984

I didn't really want to enjoy the moment;

I wanted to take drugs.

Dammit man, read 1984 (Orwell) and Brave New World (Huxley). could any comparison be easier?

The answer is no.

tak is right. or you could read either one and lord of the flies. we did that in ap english last year. animal farm is a good one that is easy to get lots of comparisons from, but for pure simplicity in paring, go with brave new world and 1984. you dont need to deeply read either, just a general overview and grasp will do.

ender's game as well as it's sequel speaker for the dead are excellent. starship troopers by robert heinlein is superb and very different from the movie. classics series' include the foundation series by issac asimov, the dune saga by frank herbert, the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series by douglas adams and the jack ryan series by tom clancy. catch 22 was rad.

you guys are really into the orwellian stuff eh? ya, you named most of the big ones along those lines but check out snow crash and the diamond age by neal stephenson. snow crash is rad. there's tons of excellent literature out there, depends on your tates. i dig some weird stuff like dostoyevsky and homer too. reading is fun but time consuming.

ya, i have to do the same thing for my english ISU, two classics tho. im doing the scarlet letter and the last of the mohicans....last of the mohicans is really really good...sort of long, but it goes by fast, its got an adventure/war thing going on, so youd prolly like it

*Look in my eyes...Im jaded now..Whatever that means...*

Anybody ever read Orwell's 'Keep The Aspidra Flying'? Any good counterparts to that?

FALLEN ANGELS is a tight vietnam war book. very graphic and realistic. best book i ever read.

~Jameson~

'And shepherds we shall be, for thee my lord for thee. Power hath decended forth from thy hand, so our feet may swiftly carry out thy command. And we shall flow a river forth to thee, and teaming with souls shall it ever be. E Nomini Patri, E fili, E Spiritu Sancti.'

i personally thought that brave new world was a tough read, because it is based on the entire anti-hero premise. Sometimes the characters were just too disapointing to go on, but i loved the book just the same.

Slaughter House 5 is probably one of the best books i have ever read. its very humors and very very interesting. i strongly suggest you read it, plus it goes by quickly and isn't very long.

skiinsted , night did rule. it was really damn good. that's my second favourite after Jurassic Park by Micheal Crichton of course.

i thought brave new world moved along faster then 1984, and that is the main reason i like bnw better. at about the 3/4 point in 1984 i got bored reading, and that never happens when you are as big of a nerd as i am.
