alright i was wondering what a good allaround lense for canon is like

one i can use as a promary lense so i dont always have to carry a

couple lenses with me. i dont want to spend to much. i would like to

try and keep it under $500

the best one is the 24-70 f2.8L but thats about a grand, so i would get another job if i were you

Bingo for every day use.

But is this for skiing?
If so, a 70-200 4.5 IS USM lens is the money shot.

an 18-200 (or somthing around that range) is all you will ever need, however they tend to be a bit pricey. but i would check it out anyways.

hey man i don't know exactly what you're looking for but i'd be willing to sell you this lens i bought with my 40D. it's less than a year old, i've taken extremely good care of it, it's had a UV filter on it since i took it out of the box, and it's a really good all around lens given the price, IS, and speed. i've sold shots to a few different companies and had some published with this lens even.

first of all forget about nikon.

second of all get yourself a 50mm f1.4 awesome for night shooting especially but great for day too you can get it for like 325ish

17-85 USM IS is not a bad choice either

Why not just get the 50mm 1.8 II ? Which does more than a good enough job for 60-80dollars depending where you buy from...

Also the 17-85 is a fantastic allround everyday lense, but for skiing I would want more zoom, look for something with a range up to 200, or get a 17-55 or something, and a 70-200. f.4.5 should be plenty considering you are shooting mostly in bright situations. IS is preferrable too, so try to strech your budget to it.

Whoever said forget Nikon... You are an idiot... Canon and Nikon are the two leaders in the market. Both lines of their equipment has it's advantages and disadvantages for set situations and you really have to buy what feels best in your hand, hating on either company is just pointless and unjustified. But this doesn't matter to this argument as you requested Canon.

Peace

i woulda agreed with you until my friend got it and i shot with it for some moon shots. it is solid for the price

any of them, would be fine for skiing, but if you want something to learn photography on then get ether a 85mm 1.4 or a 50mm 1.4 prime lenses are alot better if your just learning

Well spoken... +karma

at the moment i prefer nikons but however after trying out a few canon bodys and lens in the last few weeks i am becoming partial to purchasing. They both are the leading brands for DSLRs on the current market.

Hey

I had the same problem when I was setting up my photography kit. you want all you can get for the money... I would recommend the 50m 1.8 II its useful in so many situations, its small and light, so you don't realise your bring around another lense.

I bought a 28-105 USM and have just sold it. It was great for film cameras, however, for digital (I'm guessing you don't have a 5d or 1d) it has a focal range of about 45 - 168. so you don't have anything on the wide angle end.

I would go for a 18-200 sigma do a very good one, canon are just bringing one out that looks pretty good. However, if you would like longer zoom you can get a tamron 18-270. This lens will give you a zoom up to about 432mm! so this is super universal if say you wanna take photos of surfing with the same kit.

thats my two cents worth...

^^^ i would agree except for the fact that as i've read and heard all over the place, spend money on your glass moreso than your camera. good lenses will last forever, technology in camera bodies comes and goes. therefore, if you can buy a canon or nikon lens instead of sigma or tamron, do it. that being said sometimes there are lenses made by sigma or tamron which can rival canon or nikon in performance and price, but that's fairly subjective and usually not the case.
