Going to the University of Utah in spring '09

So I just got accepted and Im going to finish my 2 year degree here in iowa and then im going to transfer out to U of U for the spring semester. I have mainly chosen this school because of its close proximity to multiple nice mountains to ride at. For those of you that go to this school, how would you say that it is as far as life goes in SLC? Im just lookin for a good perspective on what its like because Im stoked to get out there and im just lookin for more reasons to get pumped up for it...

there's a giant outdoor community, so much to do outdoors from camping, to fishing, to climbing, and so many places to ski, large groups of people from park rats to BC hippies and everyone in between for you to ride with. Longboarding is epic, people are super nice, the city is really safe and mostly clean, and the mormon thing isn't ever as big a deal as people think it is.

Get stoked, Utah slays.

The people are fun, you'll definitely meet a lot of great people. The mountains obviously attract a huge scene, so Utah has a great mountain culture. The skiing as you know is amazing and you will definitely meet a lot of fun people to ski with. The partying can be pretty good and ahhh yeah Trevor said it. You'll have fun!

Awesome.. I dont think ive ever looked forward to something as much as im looking forward to this, and Im going in the dead of winter too, so the skiing is gonna have to be kickass. Moving all my shit on the other hand, might be a bitch...

you don't need all your shit. sell it. all you need is boots and skis, well maybe poles too depending on your preference. you'll want extra money when you get here, trust me.

truth. you need the sports equipment (whatever ones you like), a few clothes, and a sleeping bag. don't worry about anything else.

haha, so no bed no tv, no computer, none of that shit? you guys are crazy... And im only 20 so i would need that fake, you guys will have to help me out with that, noone here in Iowa that i know has a connection for that... Maybe i will leave the bed behind, but i need my computer and tv, or else how will i get and watch movies?

the dollar theater and molca are the greatest things to happen to me since i've moved here... besides the skiing.

I'll sell you a tv for 30 bucks when you get here.

bring your computer. Get good at catching shirts at movie premiers and you won't even need to bring a bunch of clothes. you can shop at the D.I. (thrift store) for pants.

oh and I'm being slightly sarcastic. Bring whatever you want... but def. come with some money for passes and shit.

um....no? Safe? Not really. Maybe there isn't a high rate of violent crimes, but you should make sure you lock your car and don't leave anything in it. There is a pretty high rate of property crime. I know two kids who had their cars stolen in the past month and a few more who have had their shit broken into. I've never had a problem, but I make sure to lock my shit up and don't really have anything worth stealing in my car. If you don't have a car, no problem there then.

And as for being clean..... not all the time.

Just being on this list is not a good thing. The inversion in the Salt Lake Valley can trap some serious pollution over the city making it pretty nasty looking some days. Seeing a brown haze over the whole city is kinda gross.

For skiers or any other outdoor enthusiasts it is for sure the place to be though being so fucking close to so much sick terrain.

and theres just a small meth problem... and by small i mean large.

i mean when i lived back in new jersey, i didnt think people actually did meth.. i wasn't even fully aware of it, or how bad it really was.

Well, I'm from california. When I'm longboarding around downtown SLC at midnight without even a second thought of if it's a good idea to be out that late, I qualify that as "safe"

people steal shit everywhere, especially bikes. SLC isn't very bad.

And yes, the pollution thing is gnarly... but that is because of the inversion, and it goes away when it rains/snows and when there is no inversion. It can be a little grimy in the summer and fall months but not that bad. It's not as bad as a lot of bigs cities, and it's really hardly ever there compared to others... EVERY day in L.A. is gray because of smog.

Plus, I was talking about various grime levels in the city as well... trash, ugly unkept houses and buildings etc.

yah definetly don't leave gear or anything in your ride. you'll just encourage it.

and if you live up high the inversion isn't bad. I live in cottonwood heights and I'm up the canyon atleast 5 days a week all year. but living down low when its around is seriously damaging to your health, its really bad. theres always a huge increase in lung sickness at hospitals. but this past year wasn't so bad because the storms and weather kept it out.

other then that slc isn't that bad for a "larger" city. you can walk around late at nite, hitch rides everywhere, and usually you won't have a problem. cept maybe west valley, I would stay out of certain spots in that part of town at night.

Eh. Dollar Theater is great, but old movies. And honestly I am going to get hated for this... but Molca Salsa is only good when you are fucked up. Barbacoa / Cafe Rio / etc have much better food than Molca (the 24 hour thing works well though)

bite your tongue chris! barbacoa sucks, it's the same as chipotle but not as good. i will admit cafe rio is danker than molca, but also like twice the price..

NOOO

Molca is 100 percent more legit than those other places. They are just americanized mexi food.

and Beto's is the best.

So as far as the skiing goes, I'm gonna be pretty poor so what resort would be the best to get a season pass from? And do they offer any kind of college discounts? I'm from the midwest so I am ready to get out to some true powder skiing and I care more about the natural terrain than the parks.. Let me know what you guys know about the best mountains, share the wisdom!

MOLCA IS ONLY GOOD DRUNK. Barbacoa on 9th and 9th might be the greatest eatery in all of salt lake, I love that damn place.

barbacoa blows balls. they don't even know what kind of food they make. yuck, worse then betos.

and yes the mountains do offer a college discount. best way to get a pass is working a couple days a week I think. free skiing and perqs.

if your looking for a real mountain definetly hit park city. so cool, they even have a red carpet and fashion show.

best mexican food is lone star taqueria on ft union
and el chubasco in PC
both are much bettter than any of the other greasy burrito bars mentioned previously

hold your tongue, all of you. Beto's is the best.

My advice skiing wise would be to get BC education and gear. I'm buying alpine trekkers to clip into my downhill gear.

For resorts, people usually do PC + Alta, snowbird or brighton. Brighton has a lot of fun terrain with a park, so some people think that it's the most well rounded, but I think that because of short runs and a park that's super sketch normally, it's a step below focusing on either park or pow if you are only getting one pass.

I'm just doing Alta next year. Alta is absolutely fun to ski. No park at all though.

So how difficult/easy is it to get a job at one of these resorts? If I could ski for free that would be ideal...

And I kind of like the idea of Alta, no snowboarding and no park. Not that I hate park, but Im not that great and its all Ive had to do here in the midwest. Im ready for that pure powder experience and I dont wanna waste my time getting hurt on rails when i could be ridin on some fuckin clouds. God I cant wait to get out there. How long does the ski season last in utah? Like from what month to what month? Im tired of these mid december to beginning of march ski seasons...

rail slayage went down today.... july 16th... gaurdsmans.... as long as i get a day in august and then it snows in sept., i will have skied every month in this past year...

that would be the one... but we set it up as an up this time..

here's bass being really emo...

it's alright man, just drop some x everyday before you go ski and you'll be riding on clouds all the time, and always riding the lift with polar bears that give you hugs and keep you warm
