Going to Japan and need some help with a pair of powder skis.

I am going to Japan this winter break and I need some help on what type of powder skis I should get. I am not going to do that much jibbing in the BC and I am not going to do that many jumps. I am going to take a pair of 176cm Rossignol Screamin' for the groomed runs, but do you think they could handle the powder? I am 6 foot 4 and about 180 lbs.

If you know of any good ski resorts in Japan that get a lot of powder and are not overrun with Aussies, please reply to my thread on where to go in Japan:
https://newschoolers.com/web/forums/readthread/thread_id/358887/

Any help is appreciated!

Youre 6'4 and on 176? You probably look goofy as hell. Get some bigger skis. Hell buy the biggest ones you can find.

No way 176s go to the bottom of your chin, I am the same size and ride 183s and they reach my mouth. My chin can't be that big. Get much bigger skis first, and hellbents sound good for a guy your size, get them at 189.

ok here is what you should do...NOT goto Japan, because once kids from newschoolers go there and the proceed to post threads about how "dope" it was and how they "nailed" all their "steezy" tricks in the "ill" powder, everything that makes it such a unique and amazing place will be lost because..... unfortunately kids from newschoolers tend to take something that rules and completely ruin it...so please kids don't goto Japan. Instead go down to your local WAL-MART buy yourself a medium to large calibre firearm, then felate it until it paints your room a nice blood red.

yeah dude really. if you feel strongly about newschoolers being idiots why are you on a site about them and why do you have over 1700 posts on it?

also hellbents, lizzies, and ep pros are what the jibbers like in the pow because they're floaty and buttery but i think you should try something with a little more burl to it and if you go with something like a prophet 100, you only need to bring one pair of skis

Ahahaha, this thread combines everything that is wrong and hilarious aboiut newschoolers into 1 place. Guy asks advice about powder skis, gets mocked for his skis being too short, then everyone says Hellbents and EP pros regardless of whether they are the right ski, or whether they actually own/ski them, then someone really hates on them= guy and acts all superior, then they get owned by a mod. Awesome, yet simultaneously terrible.

hellbents are incredible skis.. but they are gunna be extremely hard to find...

possible check out some rossignol skis.. maybe the brigade

possibly the steeze if you dont mind the grphics...

but if you want an extremely fun ski go with hellbents or ep pros

if you dont want to jib then do you even need a twin tip? if you wont be riding switch in the pow and just want to charge pow lines then buy a ski for that! I'm not an expert so I wont pretend to be but maybe the Rossignol B-squad (since you already have a rossi ski) or the Volkl Katana would be a good ski for you.. in the longest length you can find..

6 feet 4 inches is 193 centimeters, and a pow ski should be longer than a groomer ski or park ski. I'd go with something around 190 to 200 cms if you can find them

I am not your stereotypical Newschooler, I have traveled around the world (and not just for skiing) and I love the Japanese culture and have the utmost respect for it.

sarcasm meter of the guy you quoted = 10/10

he was just saying that in response to the guy who was bitching about a couple kids going to japan and actually making it noticeably worse ;)

i would definatly check out the line prophet 100 and the new mothership, ive seen it in person and it looks really sick.

Also from there, i would definatly consider atomic punx, i have heard pretty solid things about them.

from there, i would also really check out the Volkl Katana, its a bit stiffer and really wide.

I remember a time when you could ask for ski advice on Newschoolers and the responses would, for the most part,be helpful and make the decision-making process easier. Well I'm afraid that time is well and truly gone: A guy asks for advice on powder skis and his thread is defaced by an idiot telling him never to go to Japan because he will single-hanedly destroy the culture of a nation. Almost everyone else suggests a random selection of powder skis that bare little relevance to the threadmaker's needs and finally somebody suggests Volkl Katanas and Atomic Punx in the same sentence....

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

If you don't know what the fuck you are talking about, don't post- you are merely wasting space, wasting your and the threadmaker's time and confusing the process even further. Thank you.

Now, to the question:

1] What use will the skis get afer your japan trip? It would be rediculous to buy huge pow skis for a couple of weeks in Japan only for them to be consigned to the closet gathering dust for the rest of their lives. Unless of course you'll be spending several weeks in Japan in which case the skis will be worth it for the trip alone.

2] Japan is almost entirely tree skiing so you won't need anything with too straight of a sidecut, neither will you need anything very stiff.

3] What is your budget? if you have plenty of cash to spend, check out independent manufacturers like Praxis, DP Skis, Birdos,PM Gear etc. These are the holy grail of pow skis and typically you can buy almost any camber/rocker configuration from these guys. They tend to be a bit more $$$ but the build quality is far superior to mainstream brands, as is the performance.

If however you want to buy off the shelf, then off the top of my head:

Atomic Big Daddy 193

Atomic Thug 191

Salomon Rocker 192

Volkl Sumo 190

Volkl Katana 190/197 (durability issues)

Armada ARG 185

Line Prophet 130 186

These could all work but without further details as to what you want then a decent recommendation is impossible

What the hell are you talking about? That might be the dumbest thing anyone on this site has ever said.

haha yes this is so true

so heres the deal he said he would not be jibbing

so i would recomend either line prophet 90-100, the 90 should give you plenty of float, and allow you to bring only one pair of skis with you, as when i skied them this year, they were sick for pretty much anything

and if you cant get a pair of prophet 90's try for the head mojo 90, equally sick quiver of 1 ski for pretty mcuh any rider.

well all depends, if you are looking to butter around and just take the back country mellow, id say hellbents or ep pro's. but if you plan on charging, you might want a little more beef under foot, something that wil break through all conditions and chop snow even if you get epic pow. eric hjor pro model from 4frnt is pretty big mountain and sweet or maybe something along the lines of atomic. for length man, it all what makes you comfortable, but Im 5'8 and ride 186's for charging and have some 176's for mellow pow days. weight is also another issue. if you are a heavier guy a stiffer ski is going to be better, some of these soft skis are great for mellow pow play but a guy with size on non perfect snow, well, the will most def chatter.

You sound like you need a decently sized powder ski that is good all around, and really good in the trees. I don't think you need a crazy reverse sidecut or rockered ski, judging by the fact you are even making this thread. Go with something versatile. The JP Julien is versatile and amazing in pow and trees and is soft enough for a relative beginner to shred well, especially when they are 6'4. You can find good deals on them as well. I recommend that, and call it a day.

Line Prophet 100 186. Sick ski and you can use it in Japan for deep deep pow and when you get back this thing shreds groomers, crud, trees, and everything. Best investment for a big guy who doesn't do bc jibbing

I am considering demoing a pair (in Japan) but it is around $360 for 8 days and for that price I can get a pair of skis on NS.

mojo 90's used to come in 193, not sure if they still do. 90 underfoot would float you enough considering you're not jibbing (=going fast), 193 would make it one of the few skis actually tall enough for you. they turn and handle groomers as well. a great all mountain twin

If you want 189 Seths, I have this years model only used about 10 days mounted with Marker Dukes that I want to sell and I live in Japan so you would only need to carry them 1 way.
