Going sailing for the first time!

if i want to relax, i want to do so with only the work of a throttle...i don't want to have to work to go two mph...nor do i want to be stuck if i suddenly need to go somewhere fast. i literally have no desire what-so-ever to go sailing in anything less than something like the boats in the video dude posted a few posts up from this one.

alright, its fine that you feel that way; you are entitled to your own opinion. you should just respect others' as well and not hate on something so single-sidedly when you havent even tried it out.

as for this, sailing is a lot like hiking: its not practical, its not useful, its not extreme or exciting. yet a lot of people enjoy it because they have an appreciation for the nuances of the activity and the scene in which it takes place. sailing is no longer primarily a mode of transportation like it used to be, but then neither is skiing. like i said to the other guy, you dont have to like it, and you dont even have to pretend to like it, but you should at least respect the fact that some people do and there is a reason that they do.

and if you want people to ever take you or your opinions seriously, just avaoid generalizations like "there all smug as hell." it just makes you sound like an ass.

Oh really? your life must suck if you only enjoy things that are easy. Its a cliche but nothing worth doing is easy. Also nobody drives a manual because it takes skill, they drive a manual because you have more control over the car or that is the only car they have access to. Oh and i will go ahead and apologize for all those sailors who interfered with your efficiency you horribly busy man (sarcasm).

True that I will be my first time so I can't give anyone shit but i pretty sure it's gonna be fun

Azimut 55:

Cruising Speed: 25 knots

Max Speed: 30 knots

The Volvo Ocean 60 that I commandeer can go in excess of 35 knots.

I also lolled at 4 feet. Must be small boats that you are pestering.

plus those are proven to sail around the world easily and safely, i would not take that Azimut anywhere outside of long island sound, it definitly could not take waves over 7 ft

lol, how am i not respecting others' opinions? and how am i hating single sidedly? i said that i thought it was lame. doesn't do anything for me.

sailings sick when its windy, when its not, can be pretty dull. as much as i like a good sale, i'd rather go for a windsurf.

"Sailing is fucking dumb."

"I see all of these idiots out on the river just tooling around on their sail boats going 2 mph and it looks boring as fuck."

"yeah, sailboats are lame."

sounds like one sided hate to me.

nah, no real hate. yeah, i think it's lame. yeah, i think you're an idiot for doing all of that work to tool around at paddle boat speeds. but whatever trips your trigger, man.

Haha this thread is dumb, it's just back and forth nonsense. Respect ones opinion on something and let that be the end of it

I get stoned to fucking hell and sail or do other watercraft shit. In a storm I got a Lazer going 25 knots which is fucking impressive we ended up crashing so hard at that speed it was just too much. the mast fell off and shit got fucked it was fixable though. Oh the good times I have had sailing.

Bitches love sailing.

no, not those skanks that hang around your powerboat, but real awesome bitches.

And who the fuck uses sailing to get to destinations anymore? Its all about the ride, if you end up somewhere else, great.

Actually though. I have had the privilege of sailing with many hot chicks because they are into that shit. I have actually picked up like three random girls just because I was sailing. I hate those frat fucks that just get drunk on their motor boats with those skanks you are referring to. Really how in the hell is that fun?

i went sailing with some friends yesterday and there was no wind on the way back so we needed to paddle back to the harbor...

I think we went over this already.

Why does anyone do anything?

Because they like doing it.

Sailing is harder then using a powerboat, people might prefer a challenge.

Sailing is a lot more technical, there is something appealing to being in control of how the boat gets somewhere rather than drive the throttles forward and turning the wheel.

The adrenaline can be overwhelming when you are going fast.

Sailing can be incredibly peaceful and relaxing, just cruising along without any noise or smell.

With power boating it's more like "driving around" and more about the destination than the trip, when sailing, the voyage is the main point, the destination a bonus. With power boats the destination seems the point (let's get there fast).

And yes i'm posting this video again:

I like sailing on smaller boats since they are more agile and you can flip them easily and take a dip in the water if need be. I have been on some gnarly races with 40ft boats and it can be quite fun. Especially when 40 ft boats are inches away from each other going around turns with 30 knot winds.

LOL @ all the idiots who like sailing. It's already been explained in this thread that sailing is obsolete and therefore stupid. I mean, we have motorboats now, why use a sailboat? You wouldn't own a bicycle these days now that we have motorcycles!!

HAHA, silly sailers.
