Going sailing for the first time!

I'm going to sailing camp at the Seattle yacht club this weekend most likely. I don't know what to expect. Do you guys sail for fun? Should I do team sailing or individual let me know on the thread.

Having no sailing experience myself, i think it would be wise for you to do team sailing first. So you learn the fundamentals of it. Sounds like a lot of fun, I have always wanted to do it.

I used to sail lasers when I was a kid. I was never really good and the

boom always hit me in the back of the head but it was so much fun.

That sounds like a bad idea, somebody would for sure get hit in the head and knocked the fuck off/out.

I've been racing for the past five years or so and competed at team racing nationals a couple months ago, so obviously I think sailing is fantastic. You should probably try singlehanding first (one person per boat) if you're a complete noob. Also, SYC has shit wind for the most part meaning it'd be good for learning. Trimming your sails properly and keeping a flat boat (depending on the wind) are probably the most vital things to think about if you want to go fast. And of course try to have fun.

pm *stew last summer he was an instructor and this summer he might be too. The first day you will do swimming tests, rig your boat, wind interactions, and all the other stuff you need to know before you go out. I started when i was in middle school at meydenbauer yacht club and we used boats that look like bath tubs haha. The next year i moved onto 420s, and that was a 2 person operated boat. And after that i sailed a razor. give a s/o to *stew though cas that would be rad if he was your instructor

im going to be a sail instructor next week! personally i like the 2 person boat the most, hydrofoil that bitch and go!

lololol enjoy sailing while you can....sailing is the most boring form of boating. All about power boats. When were crusing through the harbor and the channels in our boat all the fucking sail boats get in the fucking way and the worst part is they have the right of way. My friend has a sailboat thing takes for ever to get to some place. All good because our monster boat wake just fucks up little sailers all day

I was hoping this was a windsurfing/sailboarding thread, even though then it would have been titled more as such. Oh well, wind is dope

You can also easily go through 60 dollars of gas/day in a power boat. Sailing's free, you can do it all day, you have the right away, and you're allowed to drink. Chances are the people on the sailboats you "fuck up" are having a better time than you

This guy knows what's up. Sailing is so fun, especially in high winds when you know what you're doing

I went sailing for a week with 4 other guys, 2 of them knew how to sail. We didn't go ashore at all, lotsa alcohol and it's awesome.

There is no challenge to power boats, which makes it great fun at first but after a while it gets boring.

I've sailed various vessels and always have fun whatever the weather.

YES!!!! YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES!!!! Sailing is fucking dumb. Can't ski behind a sail boat. It takes too long to get anywhere, etc. I'll take a motor. Thanks though.

plus sailboats take skill to operate efficently. personally I like a challenge not just driving a water car.

Nope, I stand by my statement. You can't ski behind a sail boat. Yes, you are able to physically ride behind one, but it's not "good" skiing. And you can't barefoot behind one at all. It's kind of like a jet ski or pontoon boat....yeah, you can ride behind one, but you can't really do anything cool. So, yeah, sailboats are lame.

I've competitively sailed 420s and lasers, shit gets intense when its blowing 20+ knots out so if its a calm day you'll be fine.

My only experience is with sunnys on a small lake. Its so much fun, way better that cruising on a powerboat in my opinion. Anything larger than a small sailboat freaks me out since im so inexperienced haha

i agree that some aspects of sailing are lame, like when theres no wind or your on a slow boat thats no fun, but when your on a fast cat or skiff that takes skill to sail and handle, and your going faster than the powerboats around you its awesome

Just got back from chartering a 45 foot lepoard catamaran in the BVI for a week. it was awesome. And sailing big cruising boats is super fun because once you set sail you can just chill out. The good thing about big cats is up on the bow of the boat there is the trampoline and in some cats have a patio like area with a table. Sailing>motoring IMO because it is relaxing, fun if you know what you are doing, and you don't have to pay for gas.

I'm also interested in getting into racing, does anyone know how I would do this?

i've actually never been sailing. Some of the gnar ocean sailing looks cool, but I see all of these idiots out on the river just tooling around on their sail boats going 2 mph and it looks boring as fuck.

During the summer i'm a captain on an old Volvo Ocean Racing 60.We do tours for rich people in the French Riviera with it.

Or we show them what their own yacht is capable of.

With a good wind we can go in excess of 30 knots on the Open 60.

The adrenaline is incredible, teamwork is the key and the environment is harsh.

On a rough sea it's pretty much this, you feel so alive. (and wet)

its just a relaxing sport, fun =/= adrenaline all of the time. i love cruising around a lake on a sunfish just as much as i do in tow of a ski / wake boat. you dont get a huge rush on a sailboat, but on water skis you never get a chance to unwind, soak up the sun, or have a conversation. you should at least give it a try before you go screaming about how much it sucks.

this. i used to sail three boats

one that was like a bathtub, and super shitty, but it was light and could move.

Sunfish. best low wind sail boat. super fuckin wide.

Laser. FAST AS FUCK! i mean i was 13 when i stopped sailing. but i remember going alittle to fast a few times.

i'm threadjacking this bitch

I live on a pretty small lake, but it has some pretty windy days. As of now I have a SunFish, the thing's dope but I want to pick up something like a Hobie Cat Wave. Those things seem to be pretty rare, anyone have any other suggestions? i'm looking for the catamaran type that you can get on one ski

im not hating on sailing because some poeple are into it....but as an efficient form of boating in todays society...no fucking way. It takes so long to get places. The long island sound on our 55 ft boat takes about an hour to cross where we boat....a sailboat would take atleast 3x more than that. Sailing is so boring, you just sit there going about 10 mph tops all day. Sounds boring to me i personally like a destination and actually getting there. Idc about "skill" thats the same bull shit people who drive a manual car say. Oh man you are a pussy if you can't drive a manual. Same with sailing there all smug as hell and think they run the water. Fuck sailing. They get in your way and think they run the water when in reality they all suck. I do respect some big monster yachts because there pretty cool, but if your gunna drop a couple mil on a boat why the fuck would you want something that takes forever to even get to where you are going

nah brah...dead fucking serious. Sailing is bull shit especially for the ocean. Enjoy taking like 10000 hours to get somewhere you can see all day. So annoying to be like oh fuck brah the winds gone? Good thing i got like 2000 horsepower on my boat fuck the sailers

Obviously sailing isn't practical or the fastest way to get somewhere, but racing or just cruising around in general can be a lot of fun. Skiing is the same way. In no way is skiing practical to get to a destination, with a few exceptions, but it's fun as hell and people work hard to improve. It's not always about how fast you can get places.
