Going out west

Hey guys I'm taking my first trip ever to Keystone and Breck. What should I expect coming from a small east coast mountain? What are some must do's and what are some don't do's? They don't have to be about the specific resorts but any input will help +k to all good answers. Oh and tips for Altitude sickness?

i went to Breck this year too! such a cool hill, but the town is pretty F'd up. every restaurant sucks except for 1: Ollies. get the fish burrito it was siick

also: weed is legal in Breckenridge so that should be fun for you if youre of age

dont be a gaper.

dont go out of bounds

dont be stupid about back country stuff.

dont be a pro hoe

have fun. hope for good snow. and ski.

also. go to dos locos in silverthorn or which ever town is before keystone..

i forget.. i dont live there anymore.

this is so wrong its crazy. ollies is mediocre pub style food. theres a ton of really good restaurants and bars in breck.

If you dont wanna buy a keystone lift ticket you can hike up Go devil and lap the park chair all day. go devil is quite steep though. WHATEVER YOU DO GO TO FUCKING LUCHA. Its at the south end of breck in La cima "mall" park in the Pocahontas (thats not the real name) lot and go down the stairs then turn left and you will see it. dougans has good sandwiches. the hot tubs at both Peak 7 and the marriot in breck are both very nice and both very poachable. Boatyard in Frisco has good pizza. The mountains will blow you away and i recommend you leave the park for at least one day.

if you are worried about alti sickness drink lots of water before and when you get up here. unless you are 40+ you probably will be fine. but you could get some RX drug, Acetazolamide (Diamox), from your family doc that can help too. And make sure to go night skiing can be a blast.

your totally wrong.

breck is a great town, especially for people on vacation since you dont need to rent a car to get around town, and summit has a free bus service to get around town.

weed is not legal in breck, it is decriminalized, this means you can smoke one ounce of weed in your home. im pretty positive that most hotels dont let you smoke in their rooms. and the mountain has a no smoking policy but who doesnt smoke when they are on the hill?

there is plenty of good food in breck, try erics, great nachos at a good price.

DO ski keystone, so much better then breck IMO

DONT ski loveland pass without proper gear and knowledge.

DONT buy food on mountain, you will pay

DO go to the kickapoo tavern for lunch, so much cheaper.

DO check out a-basin on a powder day, but if you cant get there the outback at keystone, and 6 chair/e-chair at breck are also a good bet.

DONT expect a powder day, it hasnt been the best year for that.

but the parks are great, especially keystone, and even if there isnt new snow make sure you get out and ride the mountain a little, you arent used to these mountains and it will definitely be a nice change!

have fun!

This needs to be clarified, it is still considered illegal to buy, sell, grow, smoke, or display in public weed. So basically its legal to hold it and do nothing with it, just treat it as you would anywhere else...

do you live in breck?

weed is not legal, you can not smoke weed in a public place.

you can smoke it in your home, and have 1oz on you at any time.

dont go to eric, eat and drink on mountain and pay $9 for a beer, or go in town and pay 3.75.

go ahead and ski imperial, shit will be wind blown, and the t-bar will probably have a half hour wait at least.

if you are skiing breck on a pow day, ski e-chair, or 6 chair.

i dont get why people think it is safe to ski LL pass with out gear, a slide can happen in the trees, and many people think a slide cant happen where someone already skied.

guess no one heard about the peak 6 slide.

As mentioned above try to avoid Breck (especially peak 8) on the weekends. If you do go there maybe try to get first chair and then leave after a few hours or if it starts to get mad crowded.

Also definitely hit up Mi Casa in Breck for happy hour or Dos Locos which is in the plaza right before the main entrance to Keystone.

Just finished up my last day skiing out here. It was definitely my best time ever. Skiied whale tail but it was super windy and whiteout. It was amazing to have snow though! Park was dope and I met a bunch of nsers and ended up skiing all day with one. I'll be coming back for sure! Thanks for all the tips +k

Yes, under exactly the conditions he described above...which in tons of other places in the US has been done. We call it "decriminalization". Did you even read it?

Everything RYAN66 said was spot on.
