End of an era for sure:

"With great excitement and emotion I’d like to announce my retirement from full time competition. Starting today would have been my 12th @xgames Aspen. Reminiscing over the last 10+ years of spinnin’ to win it has truly been the biggest blessing what this sport has given me. I could never express enough appreciation for the support of my sponsors, family, friends, coaches, and countless other supporters. With great pleasure I can’t wait to watch the next generation take over and put freeskiing on a global stage.

What’s next? Who knows. I’ll still be skiing, I’ll still be around."

c'mon man, outside of one incident, goepper has been an amazing athlete, gone to multiple olympics, went from not skiing at all to podium at xgames, and he goes on NS and supports this community.

dude was pivotal in ushering "spin to win" and is a good guy. He may not have the steeze of other guys, but I definitely turn to him to watch an absolutely stomped run. Hopefully he puts out more sled skiing stuff.

Spin to win isn’t a good thing lol

There was a post olympic party edit that he dropped. I cant seem to fond it but it was rowdy as fuck. Anyone got the link??

Nor is it a bad thing. It’s purely one aspect of skiing. Listen to the Jason Arens on the mayrand podcast. Hating on spin to win doesn’t make you cool. You look uneducated.

Anyways, Goepper has always been pretty gnarly. His switch 9 dub screamin seamen was hectic, his rail game was unmatched, his consistency was amazing. He was a great skier, and copped too much hate from tryhard cool kids on NS.

you try to manipulate kids so hard.

they see the truth, goepper sucked at skiing. he jocked and trained freestyle.

keep hating on the best freestyle skiers and pushing up the trash, its really working!

That edit was fantastic, any goepper hater should watch it if it is ever found.

Genuinely a super nice guy who actually bought quite a few things from the shop over the years just because he wanted to support us. Best of luck to him

Yeah this is true, but as someone that has experienced how he acts, I agree w Maim. Went to liberty snowflex camp in 2015 right after he bronzed in Olympics, he was coming as a guest pro. He ended up staying in the same Quad as me and my homies. We were so stoked when we found out and couldn’t wait to meet him. When he walked in the first day one of us said what’s up to him, he looked at us, ignored us, and walked into his room. The rest of the week he never said a word to us and avoided us. During every coaching session, he would stay at home, and then purposefully go ride after the campers. And then at the end of the week, all the campers stand on the knuckle of the jump while the pros/coaches hit the jump, and photos are taken. You can ask any camper that was there that year, he was pouting the whole time and didn’t do a single trick for the cameras, literally behaving like a toddler.

I totally get that people change, and he might be chill now. But that was the only experience I have being around Goepper, and he behaved like an absolute doucher.

Totally rubbed all of the campers the wrong way and set a horrible example.

*EDIT* I’m adding to this that Jon Steltzer was in the same room as Nick in the quad, and he was a straight G. He would chill w us the whole time and was a sick coach. What a pro should be.

This is an interesting dichotomy. I think I've only met Nick very briefly at a comp once, but the vast majority of what I hear about him from people in the game is super positive, that he's one of the nicest guys out there. Everyone is a dick occasionally, it happens and it sucks that was the experience that week though, and of course it'll leave a sour taste for those who were there.

However, he's always been great to work with, and always been stoked on NS and freeskiing despite the unprecedented hate here (of which I doubtless penned some). Is he my favorite skier to watch? Hell no but he's been a big part of this sport for more than a decade, he's insanely talented and hopefully he'll go drop a backcountry jump part now that makes us all lose our shit, or you know, just gets to enjoy skiing in his retirement because he's been in the limelight since he was what, 15? We'll try and do a proper piece on this sometime after X but if you happen to read this, shoutout Nick for one insane career.

Idc if he doesn't have much style, his rail game is ridiculous. I wish he showed it more.

his silver run in the people's republic of Jinping was so damn clean. he tore up any rail section mandatory but what set him apart was his bag of textbook long-ass fvckin grabs. if that's not style, i don;t want it

If you watch the xgames documentary, he literally was having suicidal thoughts and got checked into a mental health recovery center….

This is a great reminder that sooner or later everyone meets someone that, at the time, acts like an asshole. Maybe they are just an asshole…or maybe they’re having literally the worst day of their life. You just never know.

Props to Nick on a great comp career. I still remember seeing a 12-ish year old version of him absolutely ripping the PNS park when I would come home from college. Always happy to see him doing well.

Nick is an epic dude off the hill. Very nice human every time I have interacted- always having time for people he meets and generally bringing stoke. Inevitably some people will have bad things to say, but remember that anyone would come off that way if people talked about every single interaction that you have ever had.

after he was in the trollin episode and changed his ns username to nick gaper he really made himself seem very likeable and not taking himself too serious. i think it's important to mellow down when you are at the top lever of something. like nyjah seems like a fucking robot with autism
