Godfather of Skiing

plake definitely added the edgy attitude and personality to newschool, while douglas threw in a whole new bag of tricks. since then its been mroe of an evolution of style on the elements the originals put together.

gaffney, alf engen, jackson hogen...warren miller, scot schmidt, douglas, plake, alot of the canadian air forrce

while all the previous examples are the publicized godfathers, PETE PROOS progressed the sport way harder than all of them but was just unknown but if you get you hands on the movie Sanity and The State of Michigan Vs. TK then you will see for yourself. 5 years ago he was doing 270 on, uphill and down hill switch ups. backflips off 60 foot cliffs, road gaps to rails, rodeos both ways. he is a godfather that needs to be mentioned.

sorry boss but.... YOUR WRONG plake rips ive skied with him a few times and on the mountain, he can hang with the 20 yr olds even when hes rocking 205's

God damn it.....it is Mike Douglas....the end....that is even his nickname given to him by the newschoool community sooooo shut the fuck up about this already.

of course. none other.

well, others have followed and further influenced, like shan mcconkey and jonny, but no one touches glen.

freestyle skiing has been a progression, todays champions are standing on the backs of giants. chronologically speaking, Stein Ericson, Wayne Wong, Stu O'Brien, Nelson Carmichael, Edgar Grospiron, Jean-Luc Brassard, John Smart, Jim Moran, Sergei Choupletsov, Jonny Moseley, JF Cusson, JP Auclair, Mike Douglas, Shane Szocs, 4 Phils, Tanner Hall, Mick Deschenaux, Candide Thovex... assisted by the likes of Warren Miller, Greg Stump, Freeskier Magazine, Freeze Magazine, Iberg, Poor Boyz, and events like the Olympics and

X-Games.

I am suprised that no one has mentioned Shane McConkey. He DID pioneer fat skis and continues to push the sport into new directions. And he can still rip better than most, pontoons or not.

You gotta look way back to the Miners, and settlers who used to ride huge planks to get around, work, travel and have fun. as far as where Freeride skiing is now I would say it was Plake and Schmidtt first, then The New Canadian Airforce, for taking what those guys were doing before hand and progressing it. You do have to admitt that Mosely did change Olypimic mogul skiing forever. Gotta give that dude props for that!

ya, philou poirier would be the 4th phil in my post. Since the question was about the godfather of freestyle skiing and not freeskiing, I left Plake and McConkey out of the list of skiers who helped shape freestyle skiing. While Plake and McConkey are most definitely fathers of freeskiing, they are not standouts in the history of revolutionizing freestyle skiing.

exactly, reading this i was hopeing someone would say that, this is newschoolers so i figured that someoen would have picked up that he is known as the godfather of newschool earlier on in the thread

i'm pretty sure douglass is considered the grandaddy of it all. Morrison is probobly just the crazy uncle, and the new canadian airforce are all our cousins. oh the sweet family tree of freeskiing
