God....?

I had such an existenialist epiphany (I think) a couple of weeks ago. I was sitting with some friends outside, and a bird flew by. Somebody said 'what was that, a bird?' And then I said: 'It was a bird; now its a memory''. Experience; exactly Sweetcoz

God? I'd say it's just a little sumin sumin that Makes You Feel That Way, ala Blackalious:

''Deaf man get his hearing and in come vibes,

Blind man get his sight see his first sunrise

Dumb man speaking out now he's loud and clear''

And another thing, if you're a rationalist, don't attack the problem of God; it's quantum, and you're marveling at Newtonian workings. Just chill and wait...

Noam Chomsky's take on anarchism comes to mind; the neccesity to challange authorities being neccesary for freedom. I belive that its dangerous the accept something right away, without it proving to yourself its usefullness. I rejected religion, but I have seen and breifly understood ''spiritually'', and I am content with that.

Uh, I think that link above goes to a different interview than the one I was thinking above. I'll put the right one on here if I find it sometime.

ah HA!!!:

RBR: First off, Noam, for quite a time now you've been an advocate for the anarchist idea. Many people are familiar with the introduction you wrote in 1970 to Daniel Guerin's Anarchism, but more recently, for instance in the film Manufacturing Consent, you took the opportunity to highlight again the potential of anarchism and the anarchist idea. What is it that attracts you to anarchism?

CHOMSKY: I was attracted to anarchism as a young teenager, as soon as I began to think about the world beyond a pretty narrow range, and haven't seen much reason to revise those early attitudes since. I think it only makes sense to seek out and identify structures of authority, hierarchy, and domination in every aspect of life, and to challenge them; unless a justification for them can be given, they are illegitimate, and should be dismantled, to increase the scope of human freedom. That includes political power, ownership and management, relations among men and women, parents and children, our control over the fate of future generations (the basic moral imperative behind the environmental movement, in my view), and much else. Naturally this means a challenge to the huge institutions of coercion and control: the state, the unaccountable private tyrannies that control most of the domestic and international economy, and so on. But not only these. That is what I have always understood to be the essence of anarchism: the conviction that the burden of proof has to be placed on authority, and that it should be dismantled if that burden cannot be met. Sometimes the burden can be met. If I'm taking a walk with my grandchildren and they dart out into a busy street, I will use not only authority but also physical coercion to stop them. The act should be challenged, but I think it can readily meet the challenge. And there are other cases; life is a complex affair, we understand very little about humans and society, and grand pronouncements are generally more a source of harm than of benefit. But the perspective is a valid one, I think, and can lead us quite a long way.

Beyond such generalities, we begin to look at cases, which is where the questions of human interest and concern arise.

The whole thing here.

Yes, its so confuzzeling eh? All those long, tediously contructed sentances. But this thread isn't about Chomsky is it?

oh ya and tim, way back there, ya god says we're free. free to do and act as we please, with no consequences but the fate of our afterlife. the story of noah's ark contradicts this 'promise'. if god didnt want us to sin, he shouldnt have given us free will. so either the bible lies or god lies. blah.

you can't touch me, nobody has that right.

NS Ogre Crew

bleh interviews don't do much for me. I'd rather read something where he stated his theory, supporting premises and went on analytically. Interviews are just a staging ground for rhetoric.

namely: ''if you're a rationalist, don't attack the problem of God; it's quantum, and you're marveling at Newtonian workings. Just chill and wait...''

Caden bro, you're actually wrong about that 'promise' but I can't be bothered explaining it.

religion, all of them the monotheistic and polytheistic are all completely preposterous. Ther really isn't too much to explain and discuss, religion (monotheistic-based)was created in a time when man knew relatively nothing of science, knew nothing of the what existed beyond their own regions much less planet...at this time they considered egg shell one of the elements.

religion is born out of ignorance and fear, spawned by the masses of sheep (followers) who say to themsleves: 'yeah that makes sense, I'll beleive in that.' ignorance in what is possible and can truley exist, fear of death mostly. But they had no way to explain things in those times, as little they knew.

today we can explain things, some people still need stories to keep them warm and fuzzy, stories to provide them with false hope in a life after death, and suprisingly they still need these stories to keep people in line much as the tale of santa claus made kids be good, religion was also a way for governments to keep their people in line and fear holy repercussions.

It leaves me in a slack-jawed state of shock as I attempt to fathom that there are enough completely incompetent and ignorant people left in the world to still believe in these rediculous myths, but surely this religions will die out soon as people begin to grow intelectually and soon they will be extinct like ancient Roman and Greek religions.

I want to get in this conversation, so just as a starting point I'll try to the best of my ability to explain the reason why God doesn't reveal himself physically to people (although I fully believe he spiritually reveals himself to anyone who seeks him). Our purpose for being here is to have communion with God. God seeks a deep relationship with his creation and he looks for hearts that want to know him. Now part of this relationship is faith. Faith obviously plays a major part in our relationship with God. If God were to reveal himself to us physically, well then there would be no confusion... we would all know that God is real and thus there wouldn't be much to following him. Jesus says to Thomas in the book of John 'Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.' So I mean, that's a brief summary of how faith goes hand in hand in our relationship with God.

Now I know some of you may laugh at the Bible. But if you really doubt it, then I challenge you to do a little studying. I'm not saying listen to what your professor has to say about the Bible or what you hear from your friends or what anyone spoon feeds you... but YOU get alone with it and judge for yourself. Or you can continue to just say 'the Bible was written by a bunch of drunk guys who are afraid of death.'

god cant be proved anymore than he can be disproved. no ones come up with a really convincing argument either way, or maybe theres good arguments both ways, but if it was as easy as ol slick whatever his name was thinks it is, there wouldnt be any argument here. to me the idea that life in any form came about randomly is as perposterous as slick thinks religon is... i dont see evolutionary theory as contradictory to religion... but to me, there has to be a grander design behind the existance of not only life on earth in all its forms, but also the existance of all the great and marvelous things of the universe... i must agree with a saying that all things in the universe from the smallest creature on earth to the great planets ad solar systems in the heavans are testiment to a devine creator... all things denote that there is a god... i think that there is too much to life to have it be happenstance.

Tim, i must say that I disagree with your last post. I feel that the opposite is true. Never-the-less, I feel this topic pointless, so let me quote my brillant self once again:

''if you're a rationalist, don't attack the problem of God; it's quantum, and you're marveling at Newtonian workings.''

'look at me I'm phatttim, I don't possess the intellectual level to think for myself, and I beleive everything I'm told like a mythical ghost in the clouds that controls the planet earth, plus I'm so ego-centric that I feel there is that ghost watches my every move, and the whole point of the universe is for mankind, and earth is the only planet he watches.' so tim I have to tell you this right now...you are ignorant.

science never lies, only stupid people lie
