God+Skiing

this is why i hate the internet. you didn't answer the kids question, you just insulted his religion. people use the internet to express stuff like that, but you would be a lot more hesitant to say it to his face.
if you don't have anything important or nice to say, why say it? its one thing to argue about stupid stuff like tall tees, but come on man this is his religion, if you don't like it keep it to yourself
 
^ yeah i honestly went way overboard there, and your right i might no say it to his face unless i knew him so well. i just got really frusterated because i had no tolerance for this. i apologize for being rude and offensive and somewhat ignorant. and if anyone is offended im sorry i offended you, i sunk to a low level there. i just see jesus less realistic than harry potter, so i tend to get frusterated over this question. to me its like argueing about 2 + 2 = 22 or 2 + 2 = 4, and religious people say its 22.
 
1. Because a belief in God is a belief that he can do anything - like make a woman become pregnant without having to have sex
2. Jesus cured loads of people, of different things
3. Jesus is called One in being - therefore is God himself. It was 5 loaves of Barley Bread and 2 fish. He made it happen.
4. Wine and crackers being blood and flesh, not bone, is representative of the sacrifice he made dying, it's not literally eating flesh and drinking blood.
 
I second this. Saying that it is unhealthy to love sports is fucking stupid. I hate churches they are all such bullshit.
 
what about people who die in the war? we dont eat their flesh. they were actually real too ..BONUS
 
im not gonna argue with anyone, i dont know enough about religion to argue, im just gonna agree to disagree.
 
sorry, but those are two completely different things, and if you had thought about it for a minute you could come to this conclusion yourself.
The reason communion is given in churches commemorating the IDEA of the death of Jesus is because his death was the death of a man who was one in being with God, who died for the sake of all humanity. Look into into it if you want to know more.
A soldier dying in any war is fighting for the protection of his country or way of life, a small portion of the totality of humanity, and for human reasons that may or may not be just in the grand scheme of things.
When people try to argue for or against religion and have no knowledge of what they are talking about, it makes them sound pretty dumb. Learn up on what you are talking about before trying to argue about it.
 
haha thats why i claimed that above your post. i read my comment, then i was like "hmm no uhhh yeahh uhh noo thats stupid, im gonna look like an idiot". at least i can say i know that i dont know.
 
skiing is one of the best ways to feel one with the creations of god. skiing is one of my most spiritual activities and i believe it would be a sin to keep someone from doing what they love especially something like skiing. i think god would be pissed at you for not appreciating his creations. i mean the universe is all so perfect that it would be an insult not to go experience all you can and see as much as you can see. i feel like thats kind of our purpose in life. to live, experience and then develop your spirituality out of those experiences.
 
#1 is this even a question? Hes God, he can do that if he wants to

#2 he doesnt give miracles and blessings to everyone. and correct me if im wrong, i think he did heal many blind men, definitely not all of them though. He also had his reasons for it, there were times when he might do it to show people that he's legit. or that person might be in need of spiritual help or they are very close to God so he blesses them. There could be a lot of possibilities for this one

#3 He's Jesus, he can do things that we can't

#4 its supposed to be something you do to remember that he did that, not pretending that ur are eating his flesh and drinking his blood, just to remember that it did happen.

#5 many people wrote the bible, just fyi. the bible is the most accurate book of history during those time periods

 
When a religion tries to prohibit all actions but glorify a god, there is something wrong with your religion. Give it up and live YOUR life, not what someone else want you to live it. Stand up for yourself man. Question leaders, make it your job to understand, not follow. Your life will be just as good.
 
Skiing IS REAL and the whole world knows that. So why would you stress the opinions of something that has never left any actual proof of existence?

There is no evidence supporting any of these numbered claims, which is why it's called 'faith'. Water into wine, virgin birth, resurrection, parting of the sea, Noah's Ark, Adam from dust and Eve from a rib, a talking snake...ya, ok.

To OP, don't let an organized religion of baseless, unprovable claims with a TOTAL lack of empirical evidence to support itself, get in your way of what YOU want to do with your life. You only get once chance here on Earth; make the best of it.
 
dude i used to be mad religious and even then, noones ever told me that sports are bad. fuck that guy hes way off course, do what you want. i believe god said something about exploiting all the talents you were given, nows the time brah.
 
To all the people saying religion is whack. yes it is. but what your not going to change to minds of millions of people of who actually believe in an invisible guy who lives in the sky. but your getting to caught up in the insignificant pieces of it. religion is supposed to be a guideline for people to live their lives, taught through scripture in the bible and the ten commandments. its based on mutual respect between humans, if we all treat humans as we want to be treated then we will be admitted into heaven. This message has been distorted by fanatics that took literal meaning to the bible and greed because people would pay any price to attain salvation. the reason religion sounds so crazy to most people is because they don't understand its true meaning, even people within most organized religions dont know why they believe in god, their so scared of life after death they'll buy into anything that will calm their fears. just my opinion
 
hahaha sorry if it seems like i have "posted and ran"... i did not run, i have been reading everyones responses and i appriciate everyone who has responded. thank you all for showing an interest. i havent decided to quit skiing, lol. but i have decided to ski more and say this is my life, skiing is the best thing that has ever happened to me. god is not taking my skiing away. this is my life and im gonna live it up, especially with skiing. thanks again to all.
 
Who is your youth group leader to speak as though he knows what god thinks/wants you to do more than you do? Just go and ski.
 
I couldn't stand that movie.
I really really enjoy watching and reading atheist arguments - but the reason I like them is because I like to be able to THINK about them.
That movie is full of invalid arguments and fallacies. It's stupid, the arguments don't make any sense based on reason. It's just one super ignorant dude finding the most ignorant people he can who on the other side of things as he is, and interviewing them. It's idiots being interviewed by an idiot. I would hate any movie that was made like that, be it about religion, skiing, or sporks.
The only redeeming quality was laughing at the absurd interviews.

hahaha yeah, the some of those interviews were suuuper funny. but he made religion look stupid by interviewing stupid people. not to mention to movie was made based on one mans opinion so they probably edited it so it supported his thoughts and feelings. it was still funny though

2. Sociological effects: If you are doing something wrong and get away with it some one is always watching and judging you.

3. Intellectual effects: Religion provides explanations for things we cannot comprehend such as the creation of the world and universe.

If you believe in god that's great, it gives more meaning to your life I however can't pull myself to believe in something that has never shown any signs of being real.
 
Dude just do what you love and love what you do. There is no such thing as picking something over your god or loving it more, unless you allow your god to directly regulate the amount you enjoy yourself in existance.

I was raised catholic, and I always thought the whole keep god #1 thing a bit trivial. I think it goes without saying you should love you family, and the things on this earth you enjoy the most because no matter what, and Im sorry if this is harsh, at the end of you life your just going to be dust, and where that dust goes is all up to you. You might as well just enjoy as much skiing you can before you die, because the one universal truth that no one can argue against is we all die. So till then go shred!
 
A couple of things.

1) I dont think any religious leader (Christian/Jewish at least) would say that skiing is bad.

2) Eternity in hell is VERY LONG. Say you live to be 120 and every second is partying it up, getting laid by hot chicks, etc. Even up till you die. 120 years of pure joy. Now multiply this by a million. Now multiply that by a billion. Multiply that by a trillion. Think about how many individual piece of sand there are on the entire earth. Multiply that by the previous number you got. That is nothing compared to infinity. Religious leaders are just concerned for your soul, and dont want you to spend infinite years in hell

3) If you become too obsessed with anything other than religion, it can cause you to lose the very special relationship you have with God. It is like a Herion addict. All they think about is herion, how to score it, etc. Not that I think anyone here is that addicted to skiing. That is just where your youth leader is probably coming from.
 
Religion has been invented to help people cope with life because they're way too scared to live it without knowing everything... It was/is used to control people by using fear while at the same time providing answers for the unknown. but don't worry we're getting there. In maybe 10'000 years science will be advanced enough to answer all those questions that scare you so much, such as:

"why am I here?"

"where we come from?"

"whats after death?"

"where ends the universe?"

"what was before the big bang?"

Personaly I can live my life without knowing those answers and I don't need a "god" that explain everything just so I feel better. I know that 1000 years ago we thought earth was flat and we didn't know what was the bright yellow round thing above our heads. Now we know, it's called the sun. So yeah give it time, and we'll find answers.

Seriously though, I'm a bit sad for all of you that have been brought up in a religious family where you've been brain washed since you were born into thinking a god exist. It's way too late now. So I'm not trying to change your minds, it's not possible as some of you pointed earlier.

Just ask yourself this question: What if you were born in a Muslim family in let's say Iran or Indonesia? What would you believe?

 
I dont think the youth leader is saying skiing is bad because it is fun, or that skiing is bad. He is saying (basically) to have fun, but remember remember your relationship with God. Do not let a activity make you lose your love for God.

As far as heaven, I think if you asked any youth leader or minister/preacher/pastor "If I believe Jesus died for our sins, and repent and truely feel sorry for my sins and ask for forgiveness from God, but can't help myself and sin, commit adultery (and truely in my heart want to stop, and ask God to help me), will I go to hell ?". I think he will say acts dont get you into heaven, love for God and Jesus will.

If you become addicted to Coke, your life is going to suck. Your youth leader is basically trying to help your life not suck, doesnt have anything to do with the afterlife. For those that dont believe, as a believer I think it is not acts that God wants, it is a relationship with him and Jesus. I think most Christians would not want to condemn you, but just pray that you get a relationship with God and Jesus.

If you are a non Believer, how about every night pray to God and say "God, I do not feel your love, please let me feel your love". I am not asking you to not do any particuliar act, not asking you to not have sex, drink, etc, just pray to God and ask for him to enter your life.

I believe when the Bible says "do not take the Lord's name in vein", it does not mean dont say Go* Dam*, it means do not things to other people in his name. That bible verse would condemn the crusades. If a Christian parent's 3 year old son says Go* Dam* and the parent whips his butt till it is red and blistered, the parent, imo is the one taking God's name in Vein.

Christianity is not about actions, it is about love.

Feeling God's love and having a relationship with him is what it is about, and you can have that anywhere. Have you thought about asking God/Jesus to show you their love? Just take 30 seconds every night. Don't worry about changing your actions, not skiing, not having sex, please just ask God to enter your life. It is only 30 seconds a day.
