yea, god and jesus are the same person. it gets pretty cracked out when you think about it.
Jesus was a human. but at the same time he was God. not just God's son, but God. And he is the same person as God, even though God was in heaven while Jesus was on earth. And then you throw the holy spirit into the mix, and you get the Holy Trinity. All the same person, but also individuals.

my fav is Spinoza how he just says god is the universe and is indifferent and doesnt care. i heard some good things about hume but i havent fully gotten into him yet

I'm better at ethics, personally, but metaphysics is ok. I kind of prefer epistemology in some respects, though. You should look through Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding, it has some excellent insights on the nature of the individual, including the famous ship analogy.

As for the whole thing on God not preventing suffering, think of it this way..Have you ever had an experience that was so painful that you thought there was no way anything good could possibly come from it, and then later on after you made it through the tough times realized that you were a better and stronger person because you went through those troublesome times? If God were to remove all suffering from the world, humans would not have free will because they would not be able to make decisions that affected them in negative ways. Here's another analogy I think we can all agree to..Let's say you were a parent, and you loved your child and of course would never want anything harmful to come to them..But would you let them ski, skateboard, drive a car? Or would you follow them around and be an overprotective parent, not letting them experience any struggle which ultimately ends in growth.. That's what God does, of course He doesnt want you to go through harm, but He gives you free will to do what you want so you can learn from your experiences. Just something to think about.
