do you need to buy a memory card to put in it or does it have built in memory and you just upload it when your done filing?
 
you need an SD card, preferably a rather large SDHC card 16gig or something, it should also be a class 6 SD card (correct me if i'm wrong, could also be a class 4 but anyways it should be a rather fast card...)
GoPro HDs have been known to have compatibility issues with other SD cards...

so would it be best for me to buy a class 6 memory card? and does the amount of gigs affect it either?
 
Class 4 and 6 differ by minimum read and write speeds. The minimums are typically well below what the cards can actually do. Buy a name brand like Kensington or SanDisk and you'll be fine with a class 4.

I have a 16 gig SanDisk that works great.
 
Don't worry about class or brand name. get the largest card you can get. thats where your money should go. Even a class 2 will record at higher then the gopro's max data rate.

Besides, 32gb class 6's are dirt cheap on eBay.
 
probably class 4 then (i wasn't sure) but anyways if you can try cards first, do it, not all cards will work...
