I'm wondering what you guys use cause its clear to me now windows movie maker doesn't support MP4 and i really don't want to put it through a converter first takes too long and i'm impatient.

I usually just edit mine in i movie. But since your rockin that nappy windowsteeze your just gonna have to be patient my friend.

Awe shit. Fuck Windows i want a mac. i've heard Sony vegas 9 can do it but its pricey. maybe i'll just torrent it.

I torrented a copy of adobe premier pro, it's solid. And it's pretty easy to do basic things and when you're bored and want to learn more there's tons you can do.

Yeah Sony Vegas 9 HD Home studio or something like that is around $30 bucks... Thats what i will use when i get my go pro... Right now i use Vegas 7... Dont think that will support HD so ill have to upgrade

I use vegas 7 too. it works but it is really really slow with my go pro. Can someone confirm thats vegas nine works better? Because i am switching right away if it does

when i try to import the Go Pro MP4 footage into Adobe Premiere Pro it recognizes it only as an audio file. how can i get a visual on the footage?

You guys are all wrong. both PC and Mac edit the GoPro footage fine. FCP and Premiere Pro will both have problems editing the mp4 files if you shoot in 60fps. The solution is to put the H.264 video files from the camera into a different container.

This will work for both mac and PC.

1. download Mpeg Stream from www.squared5.com

2. open the .mp4 file in Mpeg Stream

3. click File > Save As

4. change file type to .mov

5. save file

What this does is keeps the entire H.264 movie in its original format, it does not compress or expand the footage. All it does it put the movie in a .mov file container. Once you have done this almost all editing software should be able to edit it without a problem.

quiktime pro should be able to do the same Save As technique, bu Quicktime Pro costs money and Mpeg Stream does not (Mpeg Stream also supports Mpeg2 natively).

Also, make sure you only select "Save As" and not "export As" unless you are trying to compress the footage before you edit (not a good idea)

i edit using adobe premiere pro cs3. its pretty good if youre not really looking to make any super professional videos. if you want a really good/professional editing program for a pc, you should get avid. supposedly its better than FCP from what i hear. im not sure how much more it costs that FCP or adobe premiere though.

I originally import them to imovie and select the clips i want, then i export them into final cut express.

yeah this is great, but it doesn't work with Final Cut, you can export the files from mpeg stream clip but playback is jumpy in FC?
Can someone editing go pro footage in final cut please explain how they are doing it

Windows Movie maker will only support WMV files, cause they are douchebags. Im pretty sure of this cause i used 123ski's advice and converted a quicktime to MOV. W movie maker doesnt support it.

through some digging, PMing, and trial and error, i've discovered this for working with FCP:

download mpeg streamclip and open your clip/clips and export them as .mov in FinalCut ProRes 422 format. final cut should be much snappier when working with the .mov files now, although the file size will probably be a little bigger than they originally were.

yeah, in streamclip. trim down your clip however you want, then go to file > export to quicktime. the first option, in a dropdown box, is compression. this is where you select pro res 422. obviously you want to keep compression at 100% so you don't lose any video quality. depending on what kind of audio you're working with, you could just kill the audio quality/audio in general if you know you're not using audio from the clip to keep file size down slightly. i included a screenshot of what the window should look like, if you're working on a mac.

Thanks man that was super helpful, for some reason I dont get the pro res format in the dropdown in stream clip, this apple uncompressed 4:2:2 format seems to be working in FCP but the files are huge .. any ideas? My friend thinks that a lot of the probem with final cut is that it is set up for my other cam (HV30) and I need to change the settings, any ideas on this?
I gave you k for the help, see you ski at the bird!!
