Global Warming?

Hey, I live in Montreal and we ve hade a pretty weak winter, hardly any snow, really early spring and even some record high temperatures in March.

I was just curious about what people on NS think about this. Human induced, natural causes or just a shity winter?

Im doing a Human Environment degree in unversity so my oppinion may be a little bias. Personally I think that people are definetly having an impact, but its hard to tell how much.

Anyways tell me what you think.

I can totally agree that humans are having a somewhat impact on the "warming."

But most of my opinion is on the fact that there is a natural warming period happening on earth right now, which is causing climate change.

Global Warming? BS in my thoughts.

Google "climategate". The scientists made it up and everyone got rich. That's the point of global warming. Just take a look at Al Gore.

human induced, and yeah man winter is lame everywhere because of it

notice how the source is 'forumpolitics.com'... but what cracks me up is scientists claiming to know average temperatures in the 1100s. So great. They still thought the earth was the center of the universe then. Woohoo!

just because people were idiots a thousand years ago (most still are now) doesnt mean that we arent able to figure things out about then from various natural records

i dont know whats scarier. the fact that you made this thread at all. or that you claim to be studying these types of things, and made this thread anyway.

that said, winter here was COLD! with a shit ton of snow.

There were some emails from some top scientists that are studying global warming that were released a few months ago showing that they were fudging data because human impact on global warming did not add up. Many scientific studies show that Earth goes through many cold and warm phases and I believe this is simply a warm phase. This is not to mention that CO2 makes up a very small percent of all greenhouse gases. Water vapor is the main greenhouse gas, and humans are not creating it.

ok clearly an argument is brewing so i suggest we all stop..... unless we want another chad's gap thread

There's probably thirty words on those charts, and you managed to not read them before making a blanket statement. Congrats.

Seriously, it says it right there. It's probably a combination of different factors, some of which are caused by man, and some of which are natural cycles. Will we ever know what the main cause is? Probably not, so just let the two political parties bicker.

mmhmm. when you wake up and realize that nothing in those emails was incriminating, and that they were just interactions between a few twisted personalities who couldn't find a way to use the overwhelmingly large amount of evidence available to prove their case......let me know.
oh and by the way....
Al Gore is currently touring the U.S, giving lectures and helping support political action. You know, kind of like Bush, Cheney, and countless other anti-global warming advocates? /rant, but before I go, let me ask you this; why would the entire scientific community, millions of people, gather together to try to hoodwink the entire world?

Personally, I believe the nanomolecular viscosity quotient or the stratosphere has been undergoing exponential decay due to quantum harmonic oscillations. Of course, ergo, increasingly, clearly.

It's obvious the earth is warming

naturally and probably will for centuries to come. But.. Is it really

man-made global warming, or is the earth naturally heating up?

Scientists say that global warming has an influence on storms, in

different parts of the world, but storms that effect america are

global warming-influenced. Maybe that explains why, some ski area's

in america got ridiculous amounts of snow, at some point?

The blue stuff isnt from records made by scientists over the last thousand years, they're extrapolations from coral and tree growth, which form a pretty reliable and agreeable gauge of temperatures stretching back.

coral and tree rings yes. tree rings actually can only go back so far because they only age so far, they can do this thing that matches dead trees with live ones...but thats a different storry. dont forget about ocean sediments which form biannually and track levels of oxygen 18 in the ocean and can be directly correlated with temperature. also ice cores tell a lot abotu past climate. this warming is fast but its on the path of several trends for the past 100,000 years or so...

I hear what you are saying. My point though, is your 'extrapolations'. What I should have said is that it is hard to prove a theory with facts that aren't exactly that. An excellent case could be made either way in this situation. Most intelligent people could give a convincing argument for either case, which is why this topic is so hotly debated. I personally don't think we are going to melt ourselves and our planet by our greenhouse gas production, but I do believe we should be good stewards of the earth. Anyway, there are a million threads on this. I am sorry for commenting with so little attention paid to it. My apologies for analysis, without, well, analysis.

Global Warming is nothing more than a giant scam hyped by Al Gore and our government to make you all spend money and have a constant fear of a non-realistic problem, although we still should work towards greener living.

Scientists dont claim to know the temperature in the 1100s, it is an educated guess based on ice core samples and co2 in the atmosphere during that time dipshit. The debate isnt whether global warming is real or not, it is unanimously agreed that the earth is warming. The debate comes from the cause of global warming with some saying it is because of humans and industry and the opposition saying it is natural.

Its been getting colder.....our earth just has a cycle its all natural relax.....Al Gore's super cereal aint that good a cereal :)http://www.newscientist.com/data/images/ns/cms/dn14527/dn14527-4_629.jpg

Are humans to blame for increasing climate change? Yes

Is this the reason for the shitty winter this year? No. El Nino years are just in general bad for snowfall.

Hahahahaha the ENTIRE scientific community.

The 'entire' scientific community HAS NOT attempted to do any such thing. Your question is therefore not valid.

I feel for people like you who have their head stuck in the sand when it comes to things like 'climate change'.

Global Warming is a natural cycle that has been hyped up by all our Governments to create jobs and bring in cash flow. needless to say its failing. Every time theres a snowstorm when there shouldn't be, it's global warming, it's snowing 1 foot in Dallas, global warming, its 40 degrees when this days average 100 years ago was 39, global warming. Considerring in 1970 they confirmed we were going into the next ice age, this earth doesnt go through its patterns in 40 damn years. and since the environmental hype has only been over the last 50-100 years. It's complete bullshit, 100 years isn't 1 second in geological time. And we've proven that th earth goes over these cycles over 20,000+ years.

They are most certainly not getting rich. Climate change is happening, and we are the cause. Having said that, there are numerous other environmental problems out there. The good thing about the awareness of climate change is that to combat it also helps other issues.

Al Gore is NOT rich because of global warming. He has been championing the issue since he was in college. Anyone who says he is doing it to get rich is an idiot.

The 'climategate' turned out to be bullshit. The scientists were guilty of being obnoxious, nothing more.

Climate scientist emails show no fraud - HinesSight

Having said all of that, one lame winter has little to do with climate change. California has had a great winter.

global warming is bullshit, its a great new way to make a shit ton of money, thats it. for al gores movie, they would fire any scientist working for them that came up with anything that challenged global warming.

they would get their measurements from cities that didnt exist 60 years ago, then compare the different measurements from then and now. say water levels were dropping in lakes that are being used as a water resource for towns.

if global warming was real they wouldnt have to lie and come up with bullshit data to prove it.

the earth could very well be warming up but its a cycle, its a known fact that the earth goes through cycles.

now i do agree that we need new sources of energy, but these retarded hybrids dont cut it. they are a perfect example of how people are making money off global warming. they arent any better for the enviornment, sure they get better gas mileage, but the process of making and getting rid of these cars is way more "harmfull" than any normal car.

I won't say global warming exists or doesn't, but I will say that based on the evidence provided by both sides, as well as the people and techniques used to accrue that evidence, it seems most likely that nobody has any real clue as to what is going on.Glaciers in the Norther Hemisphere are melting at what some call alarming rates, while ones in the South are growing at rates never before seen. I think we can all rule out the idea of the polar ice caps melting since it is so cold that even a 30degree average increase wouldn't even come close to melting them.I also think that a lot of the talk supporting global warming is a scare tactic used by certain ex-politicians to promote their agenda that supports the people who give them money ("green" energy) but I think it is important that we not lose sight of the impact we can and do have on the environment; pollution, deforestation, strip mining, and have to ask ourselves, what cost are we willing to pay for "progress."But, I think in no more than 30 years we'll look back at the global warming debate and look at how foolish we were regardless of what the verdict is.Bottom line, environmental science of this nature is similar to avalanche science, nobody really understands either completely, and people who claim to should be viewed with great skepticism.

reading the evidence in layers of earth left behind by mother nature indicates different temperatures.

not "scientists in the 1100's"

What sort of credentials does one need to be considered a member of the scientific community? I'm just curious if BS in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Thermodynamics would qualify me enough to make some money talking about anthropomorphic global warming.

Thoughts?

PS: I am very good at Keynote. I made some amazing presentations back in school.

its el nino or whatever its called. I personally believe we have created an impact on earth but Al Gore created a big scam, global warming is False

True. Not the ENTIRE.
But ever climatologist, environmental or water scientist - or any scientist that is actually legitimate.
So, not the ENTIRE scientific community, just all of it that matters.

Yes, his movie was completely biased and one-sided, and full of bullshit. However, Al Gore didn't invent the concept of climate change and global warming, that happened before he was born. Basing your argument on that assumption and his movie makes you sound as dumb as he is.
Yes, there is a cycle, but the world is no longer on the cycle. Although we aren't far off the natural estimated cycle from the last however many years, we are off it, undeniably. And the world is a super delicate place. there's no telling how much this little change could dramatically and irreversibly effect the entire earth.

I believe there are some warm spots and colder spots...some places like d.c had an amazing winter when northern ct got nothing and western mass only got a big dumping about once or twice this year

my house in suffield,ct at most got 20 inches this year in all...shitty winter for me
