Global Warming

Our planet is being killed by us. We are killing the earth we stand on. Soon, the artic ice sheets will, the oceans will rise, there will befood shortages, and no skiing.

Global warming has already begun. On the east coast it is easy to see. Winters becoming shorter, summers long, ect.

There are so many little things that we can do to stop this. Simple, easy things, that would only take seconds from your day. It's our planet, it's our choice. Do you want to keep skiing?

Do this not for me, but for yourself...

1. carpool with friends when you go skiing or go anywhere

2. walk, ride a bike, take a bus, anything to use less gas

3. use energy efficient cars, appliences, anything that saves energy

4. recyle

5. use solar energy

6. and go to www.globalwarming.org

Thank You

Just the other day reserachers found frozen contents of beetles and other various types of warmer climate evidence on the South Pole.

Also CNN report incorrectly that Greenlands Ice sheet has melted by 40 percent. Which is rediculous. And was disproven by a correspondent in Greenland.

Calculations and history show that temperatures and the earths warm climate were harsher between 1920 and 1930, than at any other point in recorded time. Do your research you'll find it.

Also i highly reccomend everyone to take geology. I do believe we're having an effect on our planet, but no where to what everyone is making it out to be at this point in time.

if your in the states (unlike me) vote for someone who WILL do something, Global Warming has been my topic of choice for over a year. I don't want to explain the whole reasoning behind it, but one of the best things you can do is vote for someone who will do something please.

sweet another global warming thread.

I think everybody has been aware of all sorts of opinions from people about global warming. People are aware that the earth is changing people just have different opinions on why the earth is changing. I just think that humans think there more powerful (can change the world...) than they really are. My opinion is that the earth goes through cycles, and we're just living through one.

my 2 cents yo!

word to this dude

to the creator of this thread.. do some research on the subject and stop blindly following the main stream media, and then make up your mind.

guys wake up. life on earth is going to go on for millions and millions of years.

humans aren't killing planet earth. we're killing ourselves.

we'll go extinct! woo! life goes on for the most adept species!

I did a speech at school on global warming. It's quite a serious subject that seems to be all talk and no action right now.

A guy i new just bought a prius. looks kinda like a sissy car right? one of the COOLEST CARS IVE RIDDEN IN, and he fills his tank every ten days for 25 bucks, 45 miles to the gallon, and it has such a dope interior, with an awesome touch screen pad and a back up camera... so sick AND i heard somewhere, idk where, that ice caps are also growing...

yeah i really dont give a shit about global warming,  people make up such bullshit about it.  im gonna go drive suv's and pollute!!!

Good point. If we do things to affect the earth then humans will die off decreasing the problem it is just a natural cycle. Earth will allways win.

99% of the Worlds scientific community is in agreement that global warming/climate change is real, accelerating, and is caused by human activity.

But I suppose all of you skeptics must be smarter and have done more research than them...

As long as we don't do anything the human population will die off to a certain degree getting rid of the problem. Though if we do stuff about global warming to slow it down not as many people will die. The human population dumps so much carbon dioxide into the air it is ridiculous to say humans don't have a significant affect on the earth's climate.

usually theres been atleast a couple good snowfalls by halloween.

this year, there has been 1 so far, and it melted that night

global warming is real for sure. but its not as terrible as most people make it seem.  its a much smaller issue than people make it.  for the movie an inconvienent truth they fired any scientist doing research for them that said anything about global warming not being bad.    and he had examples of places around the world where temperature was getting much higher and where ice had melted etc.  for example he was saying how one lakes water level is much much lower than it was like 20 years ago,  but its because they built a canal and use it for a city or something, not because of global warming.  another example is that he was saying how one area got like 10 degreese or so hotter over like 80 years. but its now a large city when it used to be forrest or something.

and almost everybody that tries to freak everyone out about global warming stretches the truth in this way.  so until they stop lying and actually give some proof that global warming is a problem im gonna keep driving suv's and wasting gas.

i believe humans and "pollution" have some affect on the planet. but not as much as it is played out to be. think of it this way, millions of years ago there was an ice age and this ice age occured without any or with minimal interferance from humans.

it is just a cycle the earth goes through.

it's almost inconceivable that a section of westernized population still exist who choose to believe that we, as the human race, haven't caused considerable change to the system we belong to on earth. since the population explosion and the exponential increase in human related output of waste, we've been so detrimental to our environment without truly being aware of the great extent of our actions.. it's silly. the vast, vast majority of the scientific community concludes we are presently reaching a tipping point, and the vast majority of opposition to our line of thinking is coming from partisan sources, mostly from american state funded university professors and researchers, or from research linked back to big oil and mining companies. even so, the american government is slowly changing their official beliefs on global climate change, but whether they'll come around in time to set an example for all you idiots to change your beliefs and silly behavior has yet to be seen.

if you take time to critically evaluate where you are basing your point of view from, you'll gain a much narrower and more accurate idea of what viewpoint or viewpoints actually hold true. climate change is very real.

i'm intrigued to see where your getting that 99% number.

If half of you took geology you would rethink so much. There is glacial scarring in countries that are now around the equator. Yes pollution is terrible, and effects our world. But it doesnt change that much as everyone think it has over the past 3 years or what ever. We havent even reached the temperatures that were reached in the 1920's and 30's.

Its gotten to the point where if a tornado happens in Texas everyone blames it on global warming. CNN has been disproved on many claims or theorys they had for global warming by scientists. So your 99% is pretty shot. Land shifts and moves over time hence earthquakes, tsunami's, volcano eruptions.

People blame all this inactivity on golbal warming, You think the Dino's blamed volcanic activity on Global warming? I mean really in the end it comes down to common sense. Most people will acknowledge that our pollution is bad and needs to change. But we're all considerabally young to how long the world has been around. I've asked my parents and they've even said they've seen worst winters then we have the last few years.

To me global warming seems like just another thing to use for business', money, and political enhancement for a candidate. They get us to buy new cars, thats money spent, we donate more money to fema, nothing wrong with that, just saying. Catastrophe's are terrible but they've been happening for ages.

This goes back to some of the earthquakes in La and San Francisco. Havent seen any lately. Were they blamed on global warming back then? Same with India and certain parts of the middle east. They've had earthquakes forever, and now if it happens you see some quoted smart dude come on TV and tell you its because of Global warming. Humans like to blame all there problems on somebody else. And in the end it will never get resolved because everyone will keep blaming one another. And since Joe wont buy a hybrid, why should Carol? I mean dont get me wrong i wish i could afford a more enviorment friendly car. But why invest in it? Its a waste of money to me and 15,000 i dont have.

In the end its all money and political motivation. Why simply believe someone because of what they say in a movie? (An Inconvenient Truth) Half the scientists arent even working anymore since so much of the movie has been disproved. I took geology and oceanology w/in the past year and half and have learned tons of things and i've based my opinions on solid fact. I guess think about it, even if the Ozone is burning up how would it infect the enviroment enough to cause storms/earthquakes. Alot of that evidence just isnt backed its theory.

I know alot wont agree and sorry for the long rant i had a very thought provoking night but please feel free to disagree this is simply what i believe and respect others opinions. And where i can jump in and feel its necessary to save our planet i will, but wont be suckered into something dumb.

Hey all of you, take a look at this. This graph is CO2 (carbon dioxide) concentration (red) vs Earths superficial temperatures (blue). It starts 400 thousand years ago to date. You can notice how incredible correlated they are through history. And you can see the vertical increase of CO2 on the last 40 to 50 years (man action). It is fucking scary to imagine that temperature should follow up also. This graph was taken from Science mag and I used it on my final thesis for engineering.

Even if the world isnt warming. it is changing and whether or not its due to us the question is. do we really want to be dumping all this crap into the air we breate and lakes we drink even if it doesnt effect the climate it effects the enviroments and it effects us because we have to breathe the air everyday and drink the water everyday.

I've never seen "An inconvenient truth".  The global scientific community has been in consensus about climate change since long before that movie was made.  I, along with many others, have been concerned about it since the early/mid 90s.

It's almost disappointing that Al Gore made a movie about it, because it gives people an excuse to deny the global scientific majority on the premise that it is "politically motivated".

If anything is poiltically/fiancially motivated, it is the movement to dicredit the theories.  "The fifth estate" recently ran a very interesting piece called "the deniers" which centered on corporate America's efforts to try and discredit the overwhelming scientific majority.  Among other things, their lead scientist in charge of claiming that global warming is untrue, is the same guy who, in the 80s, tesified that there was no link between cigarettes and cancer.

there have been times when the earth didnt ave any ice caps. but since we have them we are technically in an ice age

l love how theres so much debate on this subject...so many people reject it as it keeps getting worse...I mean whats the hurt in trying to be more energy efficent? are u going to use a debate for a lame excuss to try?!

i believe it's bound to happen.

however i think that people would take global warming more seriously if they changed the state of mind from "save planet earth!" to "save our species!"

as an afterthought, how will domestic animals such as dogs and cats survive if humans are extinct?

"save our pets!"

on a topic closer to home, at least my home, the arctic ice cap is going away. a fourth, and soon to be a third is melted, gone. im not one of those gung-ho tree hugger heads, but seriously. when kids look at world maps and see antarctica and the north pole, the ice surrounding the north pole is going to be gone in 30 years. they will see water, and not know what the north ice cap is.

blah blah blah, some say its good, more shipping routes, whatever. its bad, the sealife there is taking a beating. polar bears are resorting to killing their own, especially males killing females and cubs. huge numbers drown now because they cant swim between ice and shore anymore, just to name some of the things going on.

until i went to a lecture about it, i kinda figured fuck it, what can we do and even so, its not near us. thats until i found out it was in alaska, kinda woke me up. whole villages are dissapearing because of the erosion caused by warming of the sea, and this is in my state. sadly, its going to take an event to make people realize somehting needs to be done. and like someone said above, we probably cant stop this, but we can do a damn good thing and be greener (yes, its a gay term haha) and at least be a little more enviromentally minded.

ya a big example is freggin the resorts most national banks are not releasing money for new ski resorts because they believe they will go backrupt and another so today at keystone there is like 3 inches in the areas the haveent been extensivly blown with snow its reall kinda sad that all this is happening and no way to stop it soon

i also believe that we have a huge environmental effect on our planet. however i also believe that the issue of global warming has been blown way out of proportion. corporations are taking the issue and exploiting ppl's beliefs by making products that are "green" and creating cars that are "safer for the environment". I worked at one of these corporations over the summer (Eco Products, i did web design for them, ecoproducts.com,http://www.biodegradablestore.com is the site i made : ) ) They made biodegradable paper cups and plates among many other things. what ppl dont understand is that making these products takes wayyyyyy more energy than it does to make a regular plastic plate. also with "energy efficient cars" such as the prius have batteries that take almost as much energy to make as you will save driving the car. plus the batteries are very toxic and not easy to dispose of. as for GM's flex fuel technology its an ok alternative, what would make it better would b we lifted our trade embargo with Brazil on sugar cane so we can use it to make ethanol. ethanol made from sugar is far more economically feasible than corn. the amount of corn that would have to b grown to supply our nation with ethanol is ridiculous. that is the current plan from the whitehouse, to use corn to make ethanol. when you look at the numbers this plan is completely impossible.

so do you really think that our country would keep a trade embargo on another country if the resource from this country could help save the world? maybe, bush does only care about the upper class getting $. in the end tho if the environmentalists are correct experts say that the effect of global warming will become a pandemic for coastal cities by 2100. its a ways off and we have WAY MORE IMPORTANT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES TO DEAL WITH. like the depletion of the water table under colorado, nebraska and kansas. in a matter of decades millions of ppl will b without tap water, imagine that. this problem is very real and is well known within the science world, it just doesnt make money like the thought of a glacial meltdown does. ppl think you can just pump all your water from a river.

as for snowfall that is hard to tell. average snowfall has declined in the northwest but stayed pretty much the same in utah/colorado. the decline in average snowfall in the NW is definetley partly due to our effect on the envirnoment but i dont think you really need to worry about not being able to ski in your lifetime. to be honest its mostly up to China, they are the fastest growing and largest nation in the world and they really dont have any emission standards. soon the average chinese family will have two cars, they will be producing many times the amount of CO2 that we are.

A new analysis of peer-reviewed literature reveals that more than 500 scientists have published evidence refuting at least one element of current man-made global warming scares. More than 300 of the scientists found evidence that 1) a natural moderate 1,500-year climate cycle has produced more than a dozen global warmings similar to ours since the last Ice Age and/or that 2) our Modern Warming is linked strongly to variations in the sun's irradiance. "This data and the list of scientists make a mockery of recent claims that a scientific consensus blames humans as the primary cause of global temperature increases since 1850," said Hudson Institute Senior Fellow Dennis Avery.

Other researchers found evidence that 3) sea levels are failing to rise importantly; 4) that our storms and droughts are becoming fewer and milder with this warming as they did during previous global warmings; 5) that human deaths will be reduced with warming because cold kills twice as many people as heat; and 6) that corals, trees, birds, mammals, and butterflies are adapting well to the routine reality of changing climate.

im tired of this its is not cars that cause global warming it is planes and trains a plane well emite more co2 and other gases in a single trans alantic flight then a family car well emit over 25 years. and trains are just as bad if each person were to drive to there destanation it would burn just as much fuel. so dont blame it on cars. and as well as that it is also all of the coal were buring espisialy in china

k im gonna call bs there. the warmer our climate gets the harsher our storms are. the reason the colorado front range got hit so hard with storms last year? el nino, a slight warming of the water in the pacific ocean. and it is not the actual temperature change that creates deaths but the resulting effects of the temp change.

To me, although I believe in Global Warming, I think that the media's depiction of it is so off that it causes us to become distracted from seeing everything else we are doing to rape the earth.

Please don't use observation of one year worth of weather in an isolated area to support a generalized statement about climate change. Your thesis here is "The warmer our climate gets the harsher our storms are." Whereas your supporting argument is "Colorado had a huge snow year last year." Eliminating unsupported claims from this thread and others like it would make the discussion much shorter and much more productive.

There is no way you can look out your window and say that humans don't have an affect on the planet. Do you see the buildings? the cars? and the seven and a half billion people in the world see the same things as you do. There are cars everywhere, there are resources being consumed everywhere. For the people who say that where just in a cycle, your right except that we have induced this cycle hundreds of times faster. what used to take 1000 years + to get to this point has taken a little more then 100. There is no more time for a debate about yes or no, its come down to what can we do now to stop the storm and for the people who can't look past there own needs i feel sorry for because they are the ones we can thank when its all over in about another 100 years. lets see that should be around your kids life times

Did u ever stop to think that maybe the C02 concentration rises because of temperature rise? NO. You didnt.

just after the industrial boom, which was around the world war 1 to world war 2 time (1910-1945), the temperature went DOWN. this is after tons of factory shit was released into the air, PLENTY of which was CO2. i cant give an exact reason for that but i think i read/heard something that might explain it. and this is that when water evaporates, co2 is somehow produced/released. so as the temp rises, more water is evaported from oceans/lakes/rivers which in turn would mean more CO2. that might be total BS but if it is true this would explain how CO2 amounts rise BECAUSE of a rise in temperature. the earth is covered with 75% water.

Are you fucking serious? Have you even took like grade 7 science?

CO2 isn't released when water evaporates. That's the most retarded thing I have ever read on this site.

Honestly personal sacrifices aren't going to help significantly. What we need to do is elect government representitives that see this as a major issue and will mold policy to reflect that. We need more wind/nuclear and less coal. We need an electric car that works and doesn't cost 100k. We need someone to get on that fusion shit and make it happen.

Sadly nothing significant will likely be done until we are damn near out of oil and we are about to drive right off the end of the cliff.
