Wow. Hats off to everyone. This is a perfect example of how a thread can crash and burn. I’ve seen some really good threads on some heavy topics the last few months. This, however, is a nasty contrast to some of those good threads. I’m officially calling this a disaster area. Lets review.

1) Nothing gets the ball rolling like the classic “FUCK BUSH� in the first post. This is a true guarantee of a quality issue-only focused dissection. Score 1 Brownie Scout point for SKI-and-DESTROY!

2) SKI-and-DESTROY is also quick to build a solid foundation to the apparent acceleration of global warming. “In a couple of years somehow it will destroy the ozone causing the uv rays to melt the snow.� Nothing like using the word “somehow� to strengthen the credibility of your statement. It okay though, he saw it on CNN. 1 more Brownie Point for SKI-and-DESTROY!

3) “Our commader and thief is not worried about this cuz he ''thinks'' that it won't be a big deal and everybody will like the heat.� Woah there! Slow down little britches! Lets not get ahead of ourselves. For this statement to be true, Bush would actually have to think that everyone will like the heat of global warming. Another Brownie Point for SKI-and-DESTROY! (That makes 3 total)

4) Sever fellow NSers greet this grand opening statement with a few rounds of mudslinging, effectively killing the already abysmal topic. No real opinions on the issue yet...just some subtle counter striking. Brownie Points all around!

5) Holy Crap! The fifth reply goes panning for gold...and finds a few flakes! We now have the first inkling of a discussion. Pussyfooter makes an independent notion that doesn’t just rip at the original post. We now have an opinion...just not terribly well founded. Score 1 Brownie Point to pussyfooter.

6) The topic is not quite dead! Another independent thought. Entering the thread is levistewart. He composes a beautify crafted run-on sentence. Another flake of gold, and a Brownie Point to levistewart.

7) The thread is on the mend! Will987654321 asks a very legitimate and precise question to the threads creator. No insulting comments either! 1 Brownie Point for will987654321.

8) Ouch! If this thread were an open wound, skiierman just poured some salt...and sulfuric acid on it. Guns a-blazin’! Insults fly! The original topic is assaulted. I was so wondrously awed, I almost forgot that this post contributed absolutely noting. 1 Brownie Point to skiierman.

9) Ice-Is-Scarey mercifully tries to mend the poor thread. Another flake of gold saturated in sarcasm. An extra special Brownie Point for Ice-Is-Scarey.

10) Lots of filler and half/thoughts for about 5 posts. Brownie Points for skiierman, XxXScRAtcHXxX (2), pussyfooter, and levistewart.

11) Suddenly, Lord Klixitron bursts through the gates in a fiery inferno! The refugees screamed in terror as the evil lord descended upon their..........oops. Sorry about that. I strayed off topic. *Neil greets the thread by replying to the original post...but its another topic entirely. 1 Brownie Point for *Neil.

12) Redemption? XxXScRAtcHXxX makes is triumphant return to the thread. I think this is the first decent reply of the thread...17 posts later. Another Brownie Point to XxXScRAtcHXxX.

13) Unlucky number eh? I guess thats why we see 4 more pieces of filler and half/thoughts. Brownie Points go to...fuck it! I don’t care anymore!

14) A serious reply a not so-serious-post. I think XxXScRAtcHXxX is fairly desperate for some kind of argument or discussion at this point. This thread’s topic is officially dead. Rest in peace global warming, we hardly knew ye’ (seriously).

Pick up the August issue of Popular Science. In the opening statement from the editor he says this:

"I woke this morning to the news that a White House official and former oil-industry lobbyist has been moonlighting as an editor -- repeatedly taking his red pen to government climate - report drafts to add doubt and ambiguity to otherwise strong declarations about legitmacy of global warming and the central role played by humans burning fossil fuels."

"Voters believe there is no consensus about global warming in the scientific community. So let's be clear: There is consensus. The levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are the highest in 420,000 years. There is a correlation between CO2 levels and global temperature and current projections are that average temperatures will rise between 2.5 and 10 degrees by 2100. Is this debatable? [There was] a recent study that looked at every peer-reviewed scientific paper published from 1993 to 2003. Of the more than 900 articles in the study, not one challenges the premise that human influenced global warming is reality. And the national scientific academies of 11 countries including the US just released a statement saying 'It is likely that most of the warming in recent decades can be attributed to human activities. This warming has already led to changes in the Earth's climate.'"

SO: Global warming IS happening. It is NOT a normal temperature fluctuation.

The magazine also looks at a bunch of ways to reverse global warming in the future and is actually really interesting. Give it a read.

There are lots of ways to tell the levels of CO2 in the air 420,000 years ago. Check with your local sedimentary soil. Anyways, I was just providing you with a published example. What's your proof that global warming ISN'T happening? The fact that average temperatures are rising? I don't get how you can disregard facts. The only thing that is under debate is how to stop it. hush

Point: the earth does experience climate cycles, but we're reaching the "extreme" level of this warm period and exacerbating the problem by quite a bit.

Yes the Earth is generally getting warmer, not by much but I accept that. But thats not to say that it will start getting cooler in a few years. You can't prove or disprove it either way, It's all speculation because theres no way to tell what would be happening if we wern't here.

actually. its proven that in the next 10 years the oceans will all rise in temperature by at least 1 degree celsius which doesnt seem like much but just that one degree can have a huge impact on the earths entire climate

you all need a copy of Adbusters and not Popular Science.. sure it's by 'hippies' but it shouldn't be ignored. in every issue there's always at least 10 good rants on global warming. to the bush bashing on this subject: My girlfriend is just finishing her masters in Environmental Science and she says that in every one of their class there's always a tangent into what the us government is NOT doing or ignoring on the subject and it turns into a bush hate-fest.

interesting point on global warming:

cars and industry release CO2, which is one of the leading greenhouse gases, but they are not having the effect that they should, meaning causing a greater increase in heat than what is already occuring. the reason for this is that the oceans act as giant sponges, absorbing much of the CO2 and holding it has bicarbonate ion (co3) however, when these giant sponges become saturated...we are all fucked!

CO2 levels will increase exponentially and as a result global warming will also increase
