Global Warming is Killing a Ski Hill

The Summit at Snoqualmie, Washington State:

Scientists already have noted decreases in spring snowpack. With snow levels likely to rise at the rate of 300 feet for every degree of warming, a Snoqualmie skiing season that's now four months long on average stands to shrink to less than three months in 20 years, researchers say. In 40 years, it could be down to two months. Last year's opening, delayed nearly a month by lack of snow, could be a sign of things to come.

Imagine -- snowless in Snoqualmie.

So basically, no snow in the Cascades to ski on by most of our mid-lives. I imagine at that age most of us will be wanting to ski powder turns instead of rails and parks, so yes, this effects you.

Snomaking wont help much either, as the temperature has to be low enough to actually create snow, which it wont be.

Global warming sucks.

Aren't many resorts getting more snow because of global warming?

Sure it sucks that the Alpes du Sud in France are drying out but spots like Avoriaz, Engelberg, Laax, St. Anton.. are getting more snow every year. I thought BC was also getting more and more...

As long as the glacier in Zermatt doesn't melt off I'm happy.

yeh pay that.. all the greenies lie about stuff like that, there findings can be totally wrong in heaps of situations

yea, with the atmosphere slightly warmer it can hold more water vapor and that means more snow. thats the good way to look at it but give it a couple hundred years and we could have troubles, so pretty much we're not seeing the effects of global warming yet but we need to start sahaping up or we'll be in trouble...o and by the way this is the forth or fifth global warming thread if seen in a couple of days and i hate to say it but think about maybe "search bar??"

yeah the earth goes in cycles, but they take thousands of years to complete. i learned in my geology class that if there is a major volanic eruption, it could lower the earths average global temp... increasing snow fall. basicly we are going to have to work with what we got.

i know what you mean valley's opening was delayed for a mounth, luckly i work there so i got to rip befor the public did

maybe the west gets more snow.. but the warmer temps are ruining the east.. .the last two winters have been soo bad.. more rain than snow this year

its all cycles, sure theres global warming but its mostly in the extreme climats(north south pole) even then we are just in the last 50 years comming out of the "little ice age" witch lasted about 500 years (the time in history where temeratures and all that started to be documented) so compaired to previous data yeah it is global warming but not because of pollution but the natural cycles of the earth

apparently they're all going to melt pretty soon so ski while you can. also some resorts in eurpe have starteed covering their glaciers with giant alu foil in summer to stop them melting

global warming probably doesnt exist. yes, we're not helping anything, weve fucked up the ozone & the environment plenty, but do you know how many times the earths climate has changed? glaciers have covered large parts of the northern hemisphere 5 seperate times. the sahara desert & northern africa used to one of the most fertile places on earth. the earths climate changes from time to time, and thats just that. humans only think on our timeframe, there are so many cycles that take tens of thousands of years to complete, so we dont know jack shit about them. we might be fucking up the earth, but global warming b/c of us is bull.

sorry, i had a long day. i felt like ranting.

Dude! Global warming does exist. Its true that it goes in cycles but all the CO2 we put in the air it goes quicker... And as a result of it Europe will get colder and more wet and US cause of land climate will get more dry.

last year was fvcking bad, so less snow, but for example right now, i mean today i wasnt in school because the roads are closed because of avalanche danger, and that isnt the first day this year that the roads were closed, this year is so much better, pow pow everywhere, i got like 6 times more powder days than last year, thats a lot when you think that most of you dont know what powder is :)

^and word up to you, youre probably very right, the only thing is the time the climate needs to change, it used to last longer, but since the industrial revolution the whole process (which is pretty much natural) was forced in an unnatural way.

all in all, i am pretty sure that the planet can regulate the climate until a specific point. and all in all, a lot of other (other ones than the author mentioned) scientists say that this point hasnt been reached yet.

Dont know if thats true, I guess u are and i think it also does. But its typical American to say we havent reached it already so it wont effect the economy which involves Americas power and also they want to keep their voters happy..

yeah global warming isnt real, we got more snow here in MN than we have for the last couple years, and it was COLD for a while too

theres a good article in the last freeskier that explains how global warming will affect skiing.

It doesent have to be really cold to make snow...you need the right humidities and stuff and it will work out..it will just be a little wetter...at my local hill we make snow at -5 but thats as warm as we want to try really.

Global Warming is tricky. Are we having a greater impact than thousands of years of geological activity? No. Are we hurting the environment to the point of affecting global climates? Probably. We can't say what is going to happen in the long run and how things will change. However, we are on a warming trend. It may be geological, but we are certainly helping it along. Places will get more and less precip, but it's the mountains that are right on the temperature cusp that will notice first. Averaging one degree warmer all season can be devastating to a mountain that isn't too high or too far north.

I thought you guys were supposed to be the future! Recognize what is happening and not what people tell you. Of all the SCIENTIFIC , peer-reviewed papers on global warming/climate change in the past five yeras, ZERO have made the claim that global warming was not happening. All the articles that are claiming there is no climate change are NOT scientific articles and could very likely be (and were proven to be in one case which came straight from the whitehouse) people with political agendas trying to add ambiguity to the issue.

every time i see your name i know im gonna hate you and myself for whatever i write

ughhhh one more year of working then mammoth lakes for a year!

Not necessarily. Numerous studies have INDICATED that the phenomenon of "global warming" (with all its causes; some natural some human-related) increases the likelyhood of more severe weather patterns by providing the weather systems with more energy. This creates more and bigger storms in SOME areas, but does not cause harsher winters in terms of temperature(they'll just have more precipitation). So while the temperatures stay below freezing, you might in some areas see increased snow.

Usually a rainy winter is not referred to as harsh, where as a cold, dry(er) winter is: Think Seattle versus North Dakota.

The main projection I've seen for severly COLDER weather is in northern Europe if the Gulf Stream changes course.
