Glidecam vs Ronin M

Getting ready for winter and getting the fear all ready and the budget allows for some new toys. Iv got the old trusty Glidecam that is my workhorse but a friend of mine just got the Ronin M and has had nothing but good things to say about it. Has anyone here taken one of these on snow? I'm concerned about the battery and the cold. But I know I would use the Ronin M a lot more outside of winter shots. Input? Suggestions? Thanks!
 
mōvi m5 is lighter than the ronin m and also lets you use a ring vs the normal handle so you can set it down during a shoot, IMO that makes it a lot better

I've heard the ronin M has has a lot of issues, I also imagine it being much more of a bitch to ride with it on the lift. I've rented the larger ronin though and was super impressed with it
 
Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the Ronin M. I was on a short film a couple months ago where the DP had just got one and was all gung ho about using it a bunch, and it was mostly just a huge pain in the ass. It wouldn't stay balanced, battery was draining really fast, and it would occasionally tweak out in the middle of a take. We ended up ditching it after the second day and I borrowed a friends Glidecam vest instead.

IMO Gimbals are great for specific kinds of shots, but especially for skiing a well balanced Glidecam with a skilled operator is gonna be way less of a headache AND get smoother footage.

Also consider that you basically NEED an external monitor on the Ronin because of how the camera is positioned. So thats just more expensive shit you have to buy/carry with you on the hill.
 
I have both (not a ronin, but a knockoff, and not a glide cam but a knock off flycam)

If you are doing skiing stuff I would go with the flycam/glidecam 100% and this is why. The gimbals have too much electronics, and being around snow is suer sketchy. If someone were to spray you and snow got into the electronics you'd be screwed. Also are you really going to turn your gimbal on and off every time you get on the lift? Glide cams you don't have to worry about any of this.
 
^ I say that because this one time this asshole snowboarder sprayed the shit out of me and I was holding my t2i, and it was absolutely coated in snow,... if I was using a gimbal the thing would be fried

Also, glide cams will really help you if your hiking or backpacking into somewhere, obviously you wouldn't want to bring a heavy gimbal with battery restrictions, when you could hike in a light glide cam with unlimited battery time
