very good chance, and to be honest, as much as that will suck, keeping people sober is probably the only guarenteed way to keep the riots down

i GUESS their gonna ban beer in the park, and bars from selling liquor and showing the game

but nothing is final

You've gotta be kidding me! Banning alcohol is only going to cause more rioting. You don't think that people are going to get good and loaded up on their own before watching the game? They tried the alcohol ban at OU and it just made things worse. I think the most horrible thing about the entire situation was that the girl was killed by the police! They were using 'non-lethal' bullets and guess what.....apparently they're a little more lethal than they thought.

 
as bad as i feel about the girl dying, the police had to do something...their not non lethal bullets, their 'less lethal', meaning there is a very small but realistic chance they can cause death (such an instance, if they strike your eye, diretly into your heart, another vounerable part of your body)

people were trying to flip cars, they were climbing the green monster/reverse the curse billboards/everything...its just pure stupidity on their part..and its mostly college kids who dont even live in Boston, but just go out planning to have a good time, then busting shit up

it's sad, because in this case, there WAS NO NEED or police to react in this way. A lot of people who were with her or saw it happen ahve all reported teh same thing. The group was under control, NOT rioting. One person threw a bottle near a police horse, and another officer turned around and immediatly fired 2 shots into the crowd. the girl fell over instantly.

a less-lethel weapon such as the pepper bullet used here is deisnged to be shot chest level or below. NOT at the head. The cop fucked up big time, and I hope he/she is charged.

while you know I do consider you a friend, id have to disagree with you.

Sure, cops are a bit trigger happy, but you cant tell how anyone in that situation would react. IN all riots, the people always claim police did the wrong thing. In this instance, the police FUCKED UP, and the city of boston, with the right move, quickly admitted their mistakes. You just cant ruin the officers life, because clearly, no police wanted that to happen. It wasnt anyones intention to take her life, its just a horribly tragic incident that really ruins a great night for Sox fans

anthony. I do agree with you for the most part. however, while I do think he should face some penatly, murder is not what I would like to see him get hit with. A involintary manslaughter is a very fitting charge in this case. I just don't see any excuse for one human killing another, especially in this case.

because the people who turned it into a bad moment didnt have a reason to be happy because theyre not true red sox fans. Theyre fuckers who just want an excuse to destroy things like they think its 'the cool' thing to do. it's too bad that the girl was killed, but u can't blame the police casue they need to do something to stop all of the assholes from rioting or every year it will get worse and worse. most of the people who riot r drunk college kids who have probably never played baseball in their life and truly don't give a fuck about baseball. they r just out their for the moment, and i u ask me, i think the police should use more force casue i think they deserve to get the shit kicked out of them for wut they r doing.

it's the cops fault for firing above the shoulders but if the girl was at home or somewhere else (ie-not in an angry/happy mob) she wouldn't have been killed. but, then someone else would have.

That is disgusting on the Herald's part...I mean...jesus a dead girl on the ground then BEST SOX COVERAGE.

I don't really know exactly what happened, it was hard to get past the picture. But the riots weren't too bad, I watched them live on TV. They smashed in a soveriegn bank sign and lit a few small fires..but thats about it. And once the police moved in, the crowd dispersed. I know it was an accident and all....but damn does that look bad for Boston police.

First they're in trouble for doing too little in the Superbowl riots, now they're in deep deep shit for going overboard. It's really a bummer.

the following below is an eyewitness account from a person directly next to the girl who was fatally shot with a pepper gun bullet of some sorts...while it is tragic that she died in this senseless riot, it gives a unbiased opinion that the police were being verbally and physically assaulted..so they had SOME bearing to shoot the rounds into the crowd

Perched on a cement parking deck on Lansdowne Street early yesterday, I watched a tragedy unfold.

     As an unwitting Victoria Snelgrove stood by a sausage cart with friends, six police officers on horseback and a handful of riot cops became surrounded by a surging - and increasingly hostile - mob of Red Sox revelers. Despite scattered fires, vandalism, a few scuffles and some arrests, the scene was relatively under control for a while.

     But things took a deadly turn after a heated exchange between a mounted officer and a surly young man in a gray knit cap. After he refused the cop's orders to leave the area, the officer, from his horse, grabbed the man from the back of his shirt and tossed him to the ground.

     The man got up and began hurling obscenities and making obscene gestures at the furious cop. Tensions quickly rose. Some in the crowd tossed bottles at police while the horses began getting out of control. Riot cops moved in and started forcefully moving people from the area.

     At one point, I saw an officer toting a compressed air gun fire at least one round into the crowd. A split second later, the 21-year-old Emerson College journalism major was lying on the sidewalk, blood streaming from her face.

     Standing directly above the scene, I watched her friends softly caress her head as she drifted in and out of consciousness. One felt for her pulse. Some in the crowd began screaming for an ambulance. Another cried, ``Call 911.''

     At first glance, she seemed just a minor casualty in the foolish clash between drunken knuckleheads and police trying to reign in the chaos. But it soon became obvious the situation was dire. After about five minutes, an ambulance carved a swath through the crowd and the dying student was taken away on a stretcher.

     Today, she's in a funeral home.

The following is a message to the University community from President

Daniel Mark Fogel. It is being distributed through a special listserv. You

cannot unsubscribe from the list.

I regret to inform you that we experienced a riot on the Redstone Campus

in the early morning hours, following the Boston Red Sox victory against

the New York Yankees.

According to early reports, more than 1,000 students participated in the

riot, in which a service van was tipped on its side, close to 20 campus

light poles were snapped off and several windows were broken. We are

currently tallying the damage and do not yet have a monetary value.

We are thankful that no personal injuries resulted from this most

unfortunate and inexcusable incident. It is nevertheless the case that far

worse things can happen than what we actually experienced last night in

the course of this incident and, accordingly, we take last night's event

and the need to prevent similar occurrences with the utmost seriousness.

University Police Services requested assistance from two dozen police

officers from police departments in Burlington, South Burlington,

Winooski, Colchester, Richmond, Williston, Essex and Vermont State Police.

Police officers, following well established response protocols, deployed

pepper-ball launchers to disperse the uncontrolled mob and restore order.

The launchers deliver paint-ball-like balls filled with Oleoresin

Capsicum, an industrial form of the capsicums that make chili peppers hot

and spicy. It is considered a safe and non-lethal tool that police

agencies deploy in order to prevent the type of personal injury and

extensive property damage than can result from riots growing out of

control.

The behavior exhibited by our students this morning is completely

unacceptable. Any students found to have violated campus judicial codes or

state law will be held accountable.

As an educational institution, we will explore ways to foster constructive

and peaceful ways to celebrate. It is a sad statement that in our society

so many of these celebrations of athletic success turn into dangerous and

destructive events.
