Official press release:

"WHISTLER, BC, April 17, 2007 – Whistler Blackcomb, a mountain resort already renowned for daring innovation, has announced its boldest move yet with the construction of the Peak to Peak Gondola, for completion December 2008. The two mountains will be united by a gondola that will set world records for length and height while providing an unmatched experience for winter and summer resort guests.

The Peak to Peak Gondola will travel 4.4 kilometres in just 11 minutes, transporting winter and summer guests from Whistler’s Roundhouse Lodge to the Rendezvous Lodge on Blackcomb Mountain, giving them unprecedented access to both mountains’ expansive and unique high alpine terrain and spectacular vistas.

“The Peak to Peak Gondola will create a dramatically enhanced experience that no other mountain resort in North America, possibly the world, can offer,” says Dave Brownlie, Whistler Blackcomb’s Chief Operating Officer. “This link will effectively double, or more, the options for accessing the highest quality and greatest variety of terrain on any one day, from anywhere on the mountains. We are going to completely revolutionize our guests’ experience.”

Skiers and riders will have the opportunity to easily take advantage of 8,171 acres of terrain encompassed by both incredible mountains, via the world's longest continuous lift system. Moving freely between the high alpine areas of both mountains skiers and riders will spend more of their day in the best weather and snow conditions. The adventure for summer visitors will include spectacular views of glaciers and peaks as well as access to an expanded hiking trail network on both mountains.

“This lift is the catalyst for a sustainable economic future benefiting both Whistler Blackcomb and the entire resort community,” says Brownlie. “It will solidify Whistler’s position as the undeniable leader of mountain resorts in North America, while increasing our appeal as a top destination in the world.”

With 28 sky cabins each holding up to 28 people, total capacity will be 4,100 passengers per hour. The Peak to Peak terminal on Whistler Mountain will be located next to the Roundhouse Lodge and easily accessed from the valley by the Village Gondola. On Blackcomb Mountain the Peak to Peak terminal will be located next to the Rendezvous Lodge and accessed from the valley via the Wizard Express and Solar Coaster Express.

Construction will commence in May 2007, with the lift being manufactured and installed by the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group (Doppelmayr) of Austria The Doppelmayr 3S tri?cable gondola will span 4.4 kilometres (2.73 miles) in total distance from Whistler Mountain to Blackcomb Mountain with the world’s longest unsupported (free) span of 3.024 kilometres (1.88 miles) between the two towers furthest apart. The highest vertical point is over Fitzsimmons Creek at 415 metres (1,361 feet) – the world’s greatest distance above a valley floor."

This blows, Intrawest does NOT need more tourists to survive and make buttloads of cash. More evenly crowded on the weekend = no more empty lift lines on blackcomb on saturdays = fucking lame.

One mountain is by far enough terrain for a day.

Too bad ski resorts have absolutely different interests than the minority of skiers that enjoy themselves a lot and aren't contributing as much to some dude's wallet in New-York.

yeha, this has been a dream of thiers for some time.    There si also a HUGGGE expansion out to function junciont and creekside, 4 or 5 more new lifts......but it won't happen for awhile if ever.

Do they have the land rights to that? Wouldn't that go through that Whistler demonstration forest and like, bayshores, spring creek, and who knows what else?

i think it's not that bad. sometimes you go up one mountain and then you're like fuck, i wish i was on the other mtn. and then its just not worth it to switch, but now it is! weeee!!

rumour has it that you can pay an extra 60-60$ and get a season's pass for it. Still not worth it, can't wait to see the crowd movements that are going to happen.

The demo forest is lower and  sort of off to the side of the mountain.  the far reaches of this project start on a platuea up from function junction. Which is further out and a bit higher than spring creek and all of that jazz. Before they rebuilt creekside they had a building set up with diagrams and models of it all...it was super sweet.

10 bucks extra per ticket is a fair amount, but 60-80 on top of 1200 is really not that big of a deal. The biggest thing I'm disappointed in is this likely means more crowds for blackcomb.

Also, it looks like they have to move the drive terminal for the solar coaster, meaning it will likely require skating to get over to 7th heaven, and hiking a bit to get up to the rendezvous. Not the biggest deal, but it is a pain in the ass. Plus the money could have been spent in waaay better ways. Like a lift from the blackcomb glacier runout up to the top of crystal or something. Something to take the pressure off of excelerator.

wow, that's crazy. At least at around lunch when lots of people are lining up to cross, the hills won't be as crowded.

Except, that fee might discourage almost all the tourists, who wouldn't buy a $60 seasons pass for that thing.

yeah im so so on it... i like skiing a line down from whistler tho. like the highlight of the day when i change hills!!

There's no way you'd be able to see the cables from the village, its like a mile away. You might be able to see the cars, but they'll be super small. When you look at grouse mountain while you're on the north shore you can't see the cables, and have to be fairly close to see the tram cars, and those things fit 100, not 28. I don't think the view will be that ruined.

As far as I'm concerned, thats smallest problem with the plan. 58 million dollars? There are so many better ways that could have been spent. And don't say lowering ticket prices, thats never going to happen, so we might as well get more lifts/terrain/tree clearing/snow making/restaurants for it.

gay. build a chair for the black park. or wait i have a sickccckkkkkkkkkkkk idea... have a half pipe you could ride at night.. maybe even with a rope tow!!!

^yup...or better yet a magic carpet cuz thats even lazier and you could possible have little naps on your way to the top.  id be stoaked!

bump... who thinks they'll be more anal about smoking in this than in the regular gondolas. 28 people is a whole lot of angry tourists, but on a slow day with a bunch of your buddies, will this be possible? or will it get you into trouble?

There will likely be times you'll be able to get your own cabin, so once that happens I don't see how it would be much different from the regular gondolas. 11 Minutes, I think that's the longest trip besides the Village Gondola right? At least un-interrupted it is.

And ya, sex in that thing (glass bottom FTW!) would be awesome. So much more room than the other ones! lol.
