To all you crazy kats that are sponsored by skiing related companys. How did you get sponsored in the first place and what kind of benefits do you get from it?

no way i am going to even answer to this stupid question again, ski for yourself!

Dude you don't want to be sponcered. Sponcered is just the term they use. In reality we have to give CEO's and Reps head everytime we see them. I'm all ready getting arthritis in my jaw and all my clothes have protein stains... man I wish I never signed that contract.

Things you can do,

some can't be done.

Don't mind those people telling you off.

The easiest way to pick up a sponsor, is by starting at local reps. But before you can approach a local rep, you need some kind of substance to get them to give you some gear. The easiest and most fun way is by making a video of yourself. Even if it is done by 2 vcr's and a cd player for the tunes, its still fun to do. If that is out of the question, then the next easiest way to attract local reps is by winning or placing well in local events. All the big air comps, halfpipe comps, slopestyle comps, etc. The problem is that comps are usually another story in itself, and often you are not justified in them by judges. Regarless, there is something to be said about someone who can hit every comp and win. Of course good comp results and a video to boot is the best way to show off to local reps.

Once you've got yourself some decent placings in comps and hopefully a video or some photos at least, then you can go to the local rep (ask your store for names, numbers) or see if you can meet them in person. Often a local rep will be at local comps to promote their product, and this is the best way to get in touch with them. Anyways, talk with the reps and see if any of them can give you some gear. Often this isn't very difficult to get. Voila, local sponsorship. At this point you gotta keep on working hard to get better and better and do well at the comps (again, you dont HAVE to do comps, but its certainly an easy showcase of your real skill) and then if you warrant the opportunity it is not hard to move up in the sponsorship ranks of a company through the contacts your local rep has.

Just work real hard, and sell yourself. You dont NEED this or that, but those are just solid items that can shoe you into a company.

Good luck !

- G

Also, get to know the people who count. All the photographers and videographers always have the right contacts and usually know someone who counts. Its all about getting deep into the scene, and its easy.

I promise you if you get to be friends with people who count, it will not be hard to get some gear, if nothing else.

Also, by talking to local reps, I dont mean going up to them shyly and saying ' I'm Joe, can you give me a pair of skis ?'. You need to make honest friends with the people you meet, and sell your personality and skills to them. If they feel that by having you on their product on the hill it will benefit themselves, then there is no doubt that it will not be difficult to get some gear.

- G

Garret's right.

The only other thing I would say, is when you are talking to the reps it's important to be confident, patient and positive. The reps want somebody on their equipment who is not going to be afraid to talk to everybody about the gear they are wearing. Answering questions, psyching kids up, and just generally pushing the gear is super important. 'cause afterall, you're really just a walking billboard.

Why can't we all just get along?

Nice, garrett.

We should be nice with new people, this guy doesnt know that this thread has already been send.

or enter a major comp as a mysterious figure, then win it. then sponsors will come to you.

Getting sponsored by chance is hard and very unlikely..

dude good luck to you in your endeavors.

Sponcorship isn't always about your skiing ability... You can be a great skier with a bad attitude and nobody will want to sponcor you because you create a bad image for their company. You need to show the company what you can do for them; how you can help sell their product. Only then will they consider helping you out! It's a simple business move really. You help them, they help you! Good luck man!

Joe: 'Red, do something with your life'

Red: 'I do. I smoke weed all the time. And I took a shower earlier. What am I? A fucking superhero? That's plenty.'

yeah, so what's wrong with smokin a little pole to get ahead? (no pun intended) i'd say it's the moral high road compared to tossing salad, but hey, if you love the stink, i'm no hater. sponsers are sponsers, and hell, i know how much freestyle walking matters to you now, so go out there and get all those cool companies on your list.

YOU FOCKERS!!!!!!!

Garret dont be givin all the tips out... thats what seperates the men from the boys. they should have to figure out that shit on there own.

besides its that kinda shit that gets people skis and money who dont deserve shit... skiing comes first... and gettin all chummy chummy with the people who matters is just the bs way into it... you gotta do that along with ski well.

learn how to ski..and then worry about the sponsorship.

The people who get skis and money and don't deserve it are getting weeded out within the next year or two, its too tuff a field now a days to make it on bs. All I left were suggestions that helped me get through a few years ago, and for someone looking to strive forward, I dont think my suggestions are negative to anyone in any way. Bitter a bit ?

- G

Yeah, I'm siding with Garrett here. Don't think that it's all about skill, 'cause getting sponsored has very little to do with your skill. A rep from a company doesn't give a hoot how good you are, if you sell skis you're filling the sponsorship role.

Everybody thinks like 'I'm good, sponsor me.' That's a load of garbage. Like Garrett said, if you're wicked with a bad attitude, you're useless.

Nobody cares about your skill. They care about your marketability. So whether or not philisophically it is right to schmooze with reps to get free stuff, that's the way the world works.

Skiing is not JUST a sport. That's what FIS wants to turn it into. If we want this sport to stay the way it is, we have to realise that it is just as much a business as it is a sport.

If you want something that is JUST about how good you are, then go to the olympics.

Why can't we all just get along?

dude you need to shut up freshyfresh.. i am not worried about myself... you probably even know me.

but you guys need to realize that thats what is shitty about skiing right now... obviously marketablity is a big deal... and i have that worked too... but shit if the sickest kid in the sport cant even get a pair of skis then something is wrong.

you are probably the type of people who dont deserve shit and thats why you are talking shit on me. i know that garret for sure isnt that good of a skier, but he's probably better than you mdrotten..

so eat my balls and die

BB...niggas

you dont think the olympics has anything to do with sponsorship, corporate bs and knowing the right people???? you need to get some clarity kid....the olympics involve way more sponsorship than your run-of-the-mill comp, when we go to continental cup competitions (a step below world cup) we spend an average of $2000 on wax for 5 people for a 2 day comp...and that's on top of equipment, travel costs, food, etc. Sponsorship is everywhere, and if you have it, life is a whole lot easier

damn straight!!! thats why americans dont win races that much.. cause the way our athletes are picked isnt by skill its based on skill age and money backing them.. being marketable..

the racing industry is alot more lucrative than freeskiing and if you think that corporate sponsors dont have anything to do with it then you are just plain stupid.

i've come to the realization that the only canadians who arent complete morons are the BC kids.

thanks pocketpooldude!!! you're right.

i'm out.. shut your mouths.

Sport is totally corrupt. It's awful. I do agree with that very much.

The way that I look at it is this: I have to pay for my equipment. If hitting up the reps for gear will allow me to continue doing the sport that I love, and will let me continue pushing myself without having to quit. I'll do it.

Besides, all your doing is proving that you are willing to push their product, which is viable for a local rep. If you really want to be concerned about only GREAT people getting sponsored, then they are the only ones who will get contracts.

Who are you sponsored by, Billy?

Why can't we all just get along?

I can't believe newschoolers has come to this.

Who are all these people?

Why can't we all just get along?

Billy, Oh Billy boy. You went ahead and trash talked to me. Just so everyone knows what I'm talking about, and to refresh your memory Billy, here is the friendly message I received from you:

'i think that you are a bigger shit talker than me.

you need to let these kids figure things out on there own...

you are like a jahovas witness giving his spot away in heaven.

keep it on the DL and leave things to those who have the sense to work it on there own..

i know that you learned on your own and i learned on my own... so just let everybody else figure things out on there own too. cause otherwise you're gonna have a bunch of shit talking posers all over.

yes when it comes to money then the scene is being weeded out in the next years... but not at a more grassroots level.. and thats what really matters in skiing. we dont need kids shit talking to reps for free shit... we need kids out there who can ski as well as shit talk.. otherwise the future of skiing is grim.'

I think you've lost all sense when typing out that mindless drivel. I'm a bigger shit talker than you ? I don't understand, please pick out on any of my posts where I'm 'shit talking'. If you find something like what you've said about me, such as 'Garrett is not that good of a skier' and 'you are like a johavas witness... ' bla bla bla, then I'm only as low as you.

I have no shame in hiding my name, nor do I profess to be some kind of super pro skier. For the record I skied 4 times this year. I love skiing just as much as I ever have, and first and foremost I'm a FAN of skiing, but since school and money (or lack thereof) cut in this year I'm simply left at a FAN of skiing. What I've always been. I still keep up on reading all the ski forums every day, and when I see someone asking how do you work your way up sponsorwise, I tell them my advice. I'm really sorry that this is possibly cutting 'Billy Buckwiggler' or whatever your name is out of your much deserved limelight, but thems are the breaks kid. You seem awfully bitter and perhaps a little worried that a 13 year is going to steal your 'grassroots' thunder.

Maybe concentrate on your skiing skills like you say, and then everything else will fall into place.

- G

Oh, and back to your nonsense - At which point did I advise kids to go 'shit talk to reps' ?

And if you've truly deserved your shit and worked your way up all on your little lonesome, then why not use your real name so we can all know which mysterious pro is the real die hard ?

Speaking of the future of skiing looking grim... phhh !

- G

i believe billy got put in his place.

In my opinion, if you need to ask advice on how to get sponsored on a skiing web site then you're not ready for it anyways...

so go out and figure out your own game plan on your own...

oh yeah and go skiing too... with a big fat smile on your face.
