Getting Sponsered (the journey)

I know some people who are sponsered by huge brand such as k2, armada, etc. And some people by smaller brands such as a local clothing line, or whatever. So how hard is it to get a free pair of skis? what do you have to go through? How big or smooth do you have to go>? do companies flow their skis out or are very picky when giving skis away??

just something to discuss

i dont know about sponsorship... but i got a free pair of skis by throwing a brick through a window. wasnt too hard, you just have to be able to lift and throw and have an escape plan.

i cant really offer "real" info on this, but i would tell you to consider two things.....

1. how many kids try to get free skis (even ones whose parents clearly have no hard time buying them new ones every year)

2. how many kids actually put together a professional presentation of themselves to a rep?

I think if you are a good skier with some style, and put together a professional sales pitch on yourself, most companies would happily help you out.

ah ha! you people no longer have any excuse to troll and post a billion "get your grandma to sponsor me" threads because the search feature is now back in action. check it out.

^ yup. make a neat promo video, a typed up resume, and some pictures. they send it. it worked for me.

i think networking and who you know has a large part to do with it as well... obviously you have to be a decent rider but skiing at the right place and knowing the right people definatly helps out

its shitty for me because i know no one. i may be a better skier than the best friend of an armada rep, but they will be the ones who get the deals. either way that brick comment made me laugh

if you act professional, it could go a long way. good luck. i think sending an email that isn't professional with a few snapshots of u won't cut it. call the companies on the phone or send a nice email introducing yourself. ask for an address to send stuff or some companies have links on their sites.

Dude, if you are asking about it i dout you will get free skis. Seeing that you didnt even know was "poping" was i dout you'll get free skis, or even goggle. But its fucking hard.

guys im now asking how to get sponsered im asking how hard is it>??

^^^ and yes i do post some lame threads but i have nothing else to do, and i just feel like specifying some things so go fuck off.

you have to be fairly good. all the guys i know who get free skis and more are like good, throwing cab cork 9's 10's and stuff, good competition results and known throughout our area.

You have to do comps and get yourself out there a much as you can. There's no reason for a company to sponsor you if you just ski your home mountain all the time and nobody knows who you are- even if you totally rip.

Someone already said it...

Newtworking is Key

The ski industry is a very small inbred group of friends who have known eachother for years... get in good with a local sales rep, offer to help out at demos, be chill and dont talk too much about how gnar you are...

Don't assume anything, even those "freebies" that reps give out to local groms cost them money. Nothing is truely for free and don't expect some dude with a ton of skis in their garage to give up a pair cause you just nailed a 450 to disaster at Boreal.

Make friends with local/regian reps and team managers....

i hate how people act like fi you don't know anything about it then you can't get sponsored. Its about how you ski, not your knowledge of the industry. Having an inside helps, but some of the best skiiers and boarders I know don't even know the names of their tricks and would have no clue how to go about playing the industry, and they have gotten sponsored.

What waynewong said is very true.

I have a friend up here in CB trying to go and same route you are, he has a few things going for him already (drinking buds with a local rep). But whether that company puts on a demo at CB, my goodness he is there working his tail off. I also have a friend that is a rep, him and I were talking a while back and he said that he's tired of kids coming up to him and demanding that they be sponsored because they are sick. Demanding things won't get them done early on. BE TRUE, and genuine. People can spot fronts, and it all ends sometime.

go befriend a rep, work hard, if you think you can nail all four 720s over the biggest hits with style....clean all rails with 270s on or/and off.....ski the big mountain like it's nothing, then go and talk with them. But until then, be their friend and be a true one

misty7 has got it. its has nothing to do with style, ability, presentation or anything like that. sending a video to someone is a joke, cuz they dont know you nor do they care to give you free things.

its a waiting game to get a hookup. you have to wait for someone around you to get a break (not a sponsor either). someone needs to move up in there job or get blessed with authority then you call them up have a beer with them and blamo, your a pro.

I'm new around here, but qualified to answer the question.

This is the best advice here. There are so many quality skiers seeking sponsorship that professionalism goes a long way.

Companies like dudes that are good at promoting themselves, 'cause that's what the whole game is about.

A resume and good quality photos are a must. A video helps, but isn't necessary. Having something to show - pics, video, results, references - you can't just call and tell somebody how mush ass you kick 'cause they hear it all day long.

Don't email - it's a waste of time...we get millions of them. Find out the team manager's name and direct mail him and follow up with a phone call.

Being able to list the local shop or ski area as a reference helps.

You probably won't succeed your first attempt, but keep trying. Team managers like that - it shows your committed.

Good luck.

dude....you cant just get sponserd because your good....you have to have somthing taht nobody else has. you also need to show to the company that you are totally supportive of what they are doing and you want to contribute to the overall product that the particular company is selling.you have to rep it well......
