Getting into Canada with a DUI???

Hey guys I thought some of you might have some insight on this topic...

I got a DWAI last April (basically a low .bac DUI.) Anyway, I heard from some people in my community as well as on the internet that people have run into trouble when trying to cross the Canadian border. Anyway, I figure some of you guys might have first hand experience with this matter. I really want to go on a trip to Canada in the near future but I don't want to risk getting turned around at the border.

Thoughts??

a guy i used to work with was charged with a full OWI and said he is not allowed in Canada, not sure what it would be for a lesser offense though. i wouldnt go until i had a for sure answer if i were you, google it/make some phone calls

What is an OWI?? For sure they do turn some people away, and it is well within their bounds, I'm just curious if anyone has first hand experience because from what I can tell it seems to be hit or miss. I got people I can visit in Seattle if worst comes to worst i suppose hah

hahaha thats cool man. Do you happen to know what his .bac was? I'm not sure if it would matter. But mine was a .067 so I feel like it could make an impact.

Hmm that article says a dwi in canada is a .08, which I was under, so there may be hope.

It's really frustrating. Like I know I made a mistake, there was no collision, it was a first offence. Why's Canada gotta be so lame about it eh?

any implication of driving while impaired no matter the limit prevents you. i just ran a trip into canada and had to turn anyone away who had prior implications.

I went to CA a few weeks ago and all they did was look at my passport, ask a couple questions and I was through. Can't imagine they'd have time to look up your driving record...

b/c it's a felony charge on your record you fucktard. and for the asshole who said you got a dui for a .06. you can get a fucking dui for blowing .01 it all depends on how you're driving.

they need to stop making capital i's look like lowercase l's. a capital i has two horizontal bars on the top and bottom.

/rant.

a few friends of mine recently went to Montreal, one person in the car had a DUI and the Canadian boarder patrol wouldnt let him in. a taxi had to pick up the dui-er at the boarder and bring them back to school haha

we dont take too kindly to the drinking and driving crowd up here, however, drinking and dogsled racing is our underground national sport. only two casualties this month, frank and ted...

Damn its pretty crazy how seriously they take all this. Granted it was dumb as fuck, but I was driving fine, I got pulled over because my licence plate was dirty as fuck and the cop couldn't read the numbers.

I gotta admit it kinda sucks having another country thinking I'm a felon. It is most def. not a felony in the united states...

After 5 years I can apply for a "rehabilitation permit" and pay the Canadian government 200 Ca to prove that I am an upstanding citizen. Nothing like a bribe to a government to prove you are a good person!

Or I could just go with my original plan and hike over from AK. I did it when I was like 17 and needless to say, border patrol was pretty damn chill...

because one of the prime ministers (and im not sure how many years ago this was - maybe 10), was in hawaii for vacation got a dwi and the media here in the states tossed it all over the place. he didnt take to kindly to that apparently and stepped up the laws for any of us getting into canada with the felony. cant say i blame him

Governments suck. Its not like I'm trying to go up there and rape all your women or anything. Drink at a lower age than the US? Maybe, but I mean, Canada is just a really beautiful place and I've only gotten to explore a very small part of it. Now it sounds like I won't be able to visit a country that shares a 5000 some mile border with the US because my government is full of a bunch of dicks, and the Canadian government is full of people who hold grudges. Sounds a lot like some school girls bickering to me...

its completely dependent on your situation. Being charged with a DUI or whatever your state calls drunk driving, but taking diversion to get it off your record will mean you can enter canada. When you actually have a DUI on your record, meaning you were too lazy to take diversion, fucked up your diversion, or have gotten more than one DUI, unless your fucking lucky you will not be getting into canada anytime soon.

Yeah trust me its been a pretty shitty year thinking about a lot of things haha It just sucks because I know I am a good person and very honest and hard working, but the legal system doesn't care about that...

I wasn't given an option of diversion :( You need to pay for a lawyer to get that I guess... I don't really get how it all works. Seems like everyone is in each others' pockets....

hahaha is that a serious phone number? Thats awesome. I'm pretty sure I acted out because American culture sucks. Now I'm stuck here maybe. Oh the irony haha

how is .06 illegal at all? if i got pulled over and blew a .06 the cop would be like welp fuck, later buddy have a good night.

Actually, a DUI is not considered to be "criminal". Second, I have a little minor record and I still travel to Germany and London.

Thats Boulder for you... And to PowskierCO, Canada seems to be WAYYYYY more strict about it than other countries... I guess I just won't be visiting there and spending any of my money there. Thats cool with me, Its just a lot cheaper to get to Canada than to get to Italy or New Zealand which are my other options...

Regarding entry to Canada, you are inadmissible if you have a DUI or other criminal offence on your record. We are a Canadian Immigration Law firm and specialize in Temporary Resident Permits (TRPs) and Criminal Rehabilitation, which are the different steps you can take to deal with your inadmissibility. For more information on our services or to ask any more question you can refer to our website: http://www.canadianimmigration.net/criminality-and-inadmissibility/dui-canada-entry.html#.UbjThvmTjuo

got to say that's harsh if at 0.06 you can't get in (thats below limit in Canada as far as im aware). i had three buddies go the other way, two had dui's and all the agent did was verbally confirm that they would not be doing any driving

You're just butt hurt you can't go to canada. Although, thats absolute bullshit you a "DUI" for .6, but then you DIDNT get a laywer? You fucking idiot, you probably wouldve got it amended to like intoxication in public or some other bullshit. I had a weed ticket and paraphernalia ticket, one got dropped and one got lowered to some bullshit charge and now it doesnt even come up on my record anymore, its worth paying $2k to not get raped by the law.

I now realize this thread is 2 years old, but still, i stand behind my statement, you fucked up OP.

Is there a time limit on this shit?? I don't have a record at all but what if you got a DUI would you be able to get into Canada in like 5, 10, 15, 20 years??

Who the fuck knows. My brother, who is now a high ranking police officer, 'over-stayed his welcome' in the States by 2 days in 1997 because he was a dumbass and got his flight dates mixed up. Anyway, after that he had to apply for a US Visa and when he wants to go to the States he has to que at immigration with all the Mexicans. He has no record, he has never even had a speeding ticket. Last year we were travelling together to our cousins wedding in LA and they refused him entry. He had to go to all the way back to the American embassy in London, pay some money and he was given special dispensation to travel to the wedding. America and Canada are fucked up. Outstay your welcome in Europe and they give you money!!

Once i was on a bus to whistler for a company trip type thing. One of my coworkers got kicked off the bus because of a dui he got in the 80s. (According to him anyway).. i know there is a way to petition the canadian government to get in but probly its a huge expensive hassle idk

In Canada, drinking and driving is always a felony offense. As such, if you have a conviction for DUI in another country, they view that as a felony also (regardless of what it is in the country where commited).

That being said, it is up to the border agent where you cross if they will let you in or not. Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't.

You can also apply prior to your trip for permission to enter Canada with a prior DUI, but it costs a lot and takes months to complete.

Eventually (I believe 10yrs, but could be wrong) you will allowed in hassle free.

Good Luck.
