Getting a job in my local shop

ski shop?

Have you been there before - do they know you?

Why not just go and talk to them?

The only issue is that i assume as you are coming towards the end of your season that they wouldn't necessarily be looking to employ people right now?

yeah i know them all good. i wanna be a ski tech i know good bit about skis and i think itd be a fun job. but do i need anything going into getting the job?

experience is key if you dont want to be the shop bitch. I run a shop. If you are younger, chances are youre going to be the kid doing rentals and boring shit. If you know your stuff, theres a better chance of you actually doing something more intelligent

Possibly t ell the guy you will do some work for free so he can see you know your shit - with the view of employing you if he's happy with what he sees.

For a tech job, youre better off going in in like early september. But go in now, give your resumer or application or whatever so they have it on file, then come back later if you dont hear anything. Following up is prime.

You said you wanted to be a tech right? Do you have any experience with machinery, or better yet mounting and tuning skis? How old are you? If you want to become a shop tech they have to invest time and money into you if you have no experience.

At the mountain I work at everyone in the tune shop started in rentals. In rentals you have to be certified by whatever company's stuff you're working on example: Rossi & Burton LTR. So rentals is a good place to start. Just be the person that is good at solving stupid little problems, and that is easy to get along with.

Ill tell you my experiences...

I am 17 now for the record. As early as 13, I hung out in the shop during the summers, winters... all the time. I got to know the guys, I asked if I could help out in the fall, at age 14. They were chill and trained me for rentals right away... I worked for free for about 6 months but have been working there for pay ever since. Im still a rental bitch, but it is totally worth it... Cheap gear, great people, great parties... Ive been trained fairly well in the repair shop and done quite a bit of retail sales. Its been a great experience and I imagine it will give me a leg up in the industry in the coming years... Do what ever you can to get the job, but dont be dissapointed if you are doing rental`s a few hours per day... Then just take every opportunity to learn repair shit and you are golden...

Good luck, and just remember its all for the love of the sport.
