George Orwell's 1984: not so far off?

Every year that goes by world afairs seem to get worses, the list is infinate, but as governments seak to 'protect' citizens some freedoms are restricted but all in the interest of saftey. In addition as technology becomes more sophisticated with video phones, high speed conections, and monitoring capabilities the concepts of George Orwell's 1984 seem a potential reality for the future. Its no longer purley concepts or theories layed out in a political satire but infact the ground work is already begining to be layed out.

no, not animal farm. animal farm deals with the communist revolution, 1984 deals with censorship and the man/big brother/the dirty government.

I think anyone who wants to call themself educated should read that book. It just puts things in perspective (ps, the perspective I have right now is that we AREN'T living under Big Brother, and that our government is set up with checks and balances to keep our government from doing precisely that).

i'd say the world seems to becoming a mix between huxley's 'brave new world' and orwell's '1984' thats my take anyways, and we aren't at either yet but we could be if we don't watch our government and shit.

you can't tell us we can't sell Pent House in Abbotsford!

You look like you were built for me; You talk like you want to steal my drink

You kiss like you already came; And that's a lift to pull a line for those with out any game

It's like damn baby; You know you can't save me

But you should still tell your people that your leaving with the band; Maybe you can show me your hustle

Neither one of us would be so lonely; If only you would come over here and hold me

I caught you trying to hide your smile behind your glass; But all of your secrets become a swing set when you laugh

And all of your regrets that you're carrying a burying; Don't mean a damn thing if there's nobody to share them with

We've been following each other all night now; We ought to be all over each other like right now

I don't like crowds lets take flight now; Cause that face that you make

Reminds me of my life now.

As possible as it may seem, consider reading Huxley's Brave New World, which follows the same concept only he believes the things that we love will inevitably destroy us, which is a different but also logical perspective.

We'll have you dead pretty soon.

I still need to read A Brave New World. But 1984 could very possibly be right now. If you let your mind go, you can easily imagine the government having everything in it's control and just directing and running us like a heard of cattle.

yeah but at least here we're not having imaginary wars... and the media isn't in favor of the government... and there's more than one party...

faaaar off from 1984

yes but if you think about how the counties of 1984 got to thier status/position in the book, they must have started off with increased restriction of rights, sensoring, elections with questionable outcomes, and with people rallying behind a cause. With the use of the word 'terrorism' these days their is no one enemy, everyone is a potential terrorist. How do you know who is and who isnt, who makes up al-Quaeda ?, how many other sects are enemies, seeing as for the most part terrorists are invisble, how can one know who the terrorists are. The government has the ablity to raise the alert status to red, and how will citizens know wether its true or not. As a result people will rally behind a leader that says he will fight terrorism in any shape or form. I deffinatley dont think the USA is like the england or the world of 1984, but just that its not a great leap of imagination to see it becoming that way, the ground work has become.

there are 'different parties', but who is to say that the elections are really elections. The world is ran by one megacorporation from mars. It's like The Truman Show on a global scale.

I think we all are on the lookout for the 'thin end of the wedge', so to speak (I'm not sure who I'm quoting there), but some measures that could partially restrict your freedom are necessary for maintaining order. However, once the restrictions become severe enough that law abiding citizens are hassled then it has gone too far.

Article I wrote for my website:

Rhe Republican National Convention started a couple days ago. And while Dick Cheney has said some suprisingly moderate things (like that he feels the states should decide for themselves about gay marriage) and also blessedly pledged not to run for office again after this campaign, Bush has been touring the country. One day, at a question-and-answer session with the 'general public,' someone actually asked a good question: Can the war on terror actually be won? Bush's response: No. Now he's trying to backpedal. In a speech later he said that the war on terror cannot actually be won in the sense that we will never 'sit down at the peace table' (NPR News, August 31, 2004).

And there it is right there. It's the perfect Orwellian concept. The war that will never end. The war that, by definition, can never end. We're fighting our war with Eurasia and we've got our eye on Eastasia. And Oceania too, in case they try anything funny. And, even though we cannot measure whether the terrorist mindset is really subsiding (actually, statistics indicate that the number of terrorist attacks worldwide is increasing), we are told that we are winning. We are told that we are winning so that we will keep lending our children to the armed forces to be used as cannon fodder. No, it won't be easy. We're not doing well in the war on terror at the moment. But we ARE winning.

And behind all this doublespeak is doublethink. How can we be winning the war on terror when we don't even know how to fight it? Fight fire with fire and someone's gonna get burned.

And sadly, the American proles are the same as the proles of 1984: they just don't care.

But don't worry. This will all be sorted out by Minitrue. You know who I'm talking about... the ones who are Fair And Balanced.

as said earlier, the party in office has the abbillity to raise terror levels, give blanket alerts, and keep the public frightened. such as the recent announcement of an al-quaeda related attack planned in the states, based on information that was retrieved over two years ago. so lately, it being an election year, the big question seems to be 'who will win the war on terror?' the bush government is putting old news on the table to scare the voters into another four years of shit. orwell's idea was not too far off from what we've been seeing in the oval.

I read the book about two weeks ago and i was so paranoid. the first thing that i thought was 'the patriot act'. how many freedoms are we willing to sacrifce to defend oureslves? at what point does the world turn into the world of 1984? has it already started?

yah as the state of events progress towards the 'end of the wedge', or line or what ever you want to call it, the line becomes more obscured. I think the point that alot of the citizens dont care is really disturbing but true. It would be nice to think that everyone is monitoring the gov't and making sure they dont cross any boundries, but sadly everyone just puts complete faith into the gov't. It seems that in a state of threat the common people feel very patriotic and are unable to separate government actions, and loyalty to their country. On a slightly different note, the war on terror fundementaly is a war of ideals. The western way of life vrs the rest of the world. The west attempts to turn third world counties to a new way of life, the life of the 21st century, while the citizens of the countries feel no change and only see what they do not have, viewing countries such as the USA as only suppresing them, attempting to keep them under only to further their aims (the usa's). Sadly this seems to be exactly what does happen, as organizations that represent the west, IMF, world bank, 'keep the third world on its knees', in debt, in essence run by those organizations. It is no wonder that in a situation like this members of the held down countries, in many cases seemingly with no hope, end up taking their frustration/vengance out on the perpetrators; at which point we wonder why?

well one major diff i found between our world and 1984's (other than the extreamness of '84) is sex.

orwell predicted that sex would become merely a method of reproduction, odd and uncomfortable, not to be talked about.

but our goverment is actually trying to make sex more common, open to everyone, and a thing merely to be enjoyed by anyone with anyone. not as a pact of love between to people, but a hobby or a sport. i find this scary, that our goverment is trying to make something as special and private as sex, into something as open as a sporting event

ultimatley that might achieve the same goal, not that i think their is a goal of the gov't at this point in time, but as opposed to being a prohibited activity it will be so common that it will have little or no significance?

One life. One world. Live, or die trying.

i pointed out earlier that the world is hbecoming blend of 'A Brave New World' and '1984' its both the never ending war and control needed to 'win' that war that is from 1984 and on the other end it is the m-tv culture and sexualiation(sp) of everything that is the element of A Brave New World.

you can't tell us we can't sell Pent House in Abbotsford!

5 books you should all read.

1984 - Orwell

Fahrenheit 451 - Bradbury

A Brave New World - Huxley

A Brave New World Revisited - Huxley

Island - Huxley

Society itself is rolling towards the images depicted in 1984 and BNW. 451 points this out. How do you stop society?

'Hey look, a gay INTERACIAL newly wed couple, burning the American Flag.'

think about the level of the Chicago 'protests' in 1968 and then the protests in New York last week. Then compare the number of arrests.

yah i definately read 1984 last year, and had to write an essay on how 1984 relates to the circumstances our country faces now these days. I definately agree that it seems like we're moving towards a controlled society. But honestly i dont think it'll ever get that bad. it was a good book tho...to tired/lazy to type any more of my views...plus no one would read it anyways!
