GB Freeski Media Guide

I can't help but feel that there was some stuff in there that NS really helped get into popular venacular.

And in true British style..... I don't know what it is about British ski governing bodies but they just think they are the shit.

And who ever put the fridge kids. needs a slap.

Is that not cool?

I think that is awesome. I wish I was a fridge kid.

Its like the European version of a mid-westerner or average east coaster.

I grew up as a fridge kid.. Started my racing career there.

But for the most part the park rat fridgeys its a bunch of cocky kids that think they are unreal until they go to a real mountain and shit their pants.

It was more the explanation of the fridge kid that needed the slap :P

"Fridge Kid

An athlete self taught on indoor slopes with a

reputation for out-competing skiers born and bred on

natural snow terrain"

Makes us skiers from the UK sound like dicks.

Suck a fat cock.

I consider myself a 'fridge kid'.

Ive skied in them all my life pretty much and they did not turn me into a "cocky kid".

Maybe in racing where you all have gay boners for each other. But certainly not in the park scene. ITs super chill and a well recognised building block of many people's skiing career.

Racing in the UK is full of cocky dicks. Kids that cry when they loose a race on a 100 meter slope then throw there skis at their parents but personally I think the UK freeski scene is the total opposite. Everyone is always stoked on each other.

Like everywhere there are a few stuck up kids but in what sport are there not?

This "Media Guide" does not come across as a good thing for British skiing in my opinion. Makes us all sound like arrogant and stuck up which were not!!!

Yeah being a fridge kid is cool. Ill agree that when some get on a mountain to ski it can be pretty funny but get them in that mountains park it's a differnt matter. Fridges develop some great park riders.

The 'summerhayzed' thing's stupid.

Most of the definitions sound like they've come from straight from here as well.

Seems like they're trying to make skiing seem 'cool' to people new to the sport

What's wrong with summerhayzed, I think that one is awsome. Really I think some people are taking it a bit too seriously. It's supposed to be a bit of a joke nothing more. Prob put together by sharpie, you would all be complaining much more if it was supper serious.

I guess summerhayzed isn't stupid, it just seemed as though the definitions are trying too hard to appeal to non skiers.

Do you not think they are trying to actually appeal to your average skier. Most skiers will have no idea what a britney or kfed area when it comes to skiing. It's just trying to explain some of the weirder and funny names for things we have in freestyle.

...or maybe its when LVV is commentating on ski slope and he refers to something that woodsy does on a rail as a 'K-fed' and when they call him a fridge kid, (which happens in almost every live coverage of an event he is in) people don't think that skiing is retarded and they actually know what is going on, therefore making it more appealing to everyone.

I suppose so, I guess I came off as complaining about this whole thing, which I didnt mean to do.

Exactly, you've got to remember what your typical british skier is. Most skiers from the UK will spend a week or two in the alps each year skiing groomers and drinking vin chaud at lunch. Whilst of course there are exceptions, this general rule is reflected by only by page 22, but also by most of the skiing media in the UK, print and digital, and what products most shops stock.

It's not just the uk. The vast majority of skiers don't ski park. People here forget that we are a small minority being park skiers.

How did they try to hard? It's a non serious look at the stupid names we have for things. It's a light hearted take on skiing if anything.

There trying too hard for people that are already in the industry as its bigging up the gb team to a much higher level than they actually are.

If you look at it from a gapers point of view Im sure they will love the media guides and it will teach them allot about the sport, But from the point of view of someone in the sport some of the stuff in it is pretty ridiculous such as the definition of fridge kids, freeski friday and Summerhayzed

Plus I think it would scare off potential investors (which come on is going to be the big plus of the sport being in the olympics otherwise there is no point) if they saw the sport as to much of a joke.

I know it doesnt effect most of us. But, it's a factor I see.

I really don't get why people think the definitions are so bad. They are things that get said. Skiing is not a serious sport generally so sorry if you feel the gb team should be taking things more seriously.

And in terms of bigger them selves up, I don't really they are. They currently have the no 1 rated slope skier in the world and Katie on the woman's side has a very good chance too. The uk does not really have many athletes who can potentially medal at the Winter Olympics apart from sliding sports. So the fact we have 2 skiers who have a serious chance is a big deal. As a Brit I'm very proud of our team as a whole and having working with the gb team I can tell you they take it as serious as any other nation.

Get behind your team if your from the uk and don't worry about a few silly definitions you think make us look uncool.

I never said I wasn't behind my team. It just bugs me when they big up the team only to then promote the team negatively when they dont get the results everyone wants. I saw an article the other day about the NZ open titled "Three brits fail as road to sochi 2014 gets underway" and it pissed me off as if you look at where all these guys come from, where they ski and how well they do is definitely not a "fail"

I mean how many halfpipes do we have in the UK? None

How many mountains do we have with consistant good weather that are easily accessed and have parks of a high quality? again none

So the team is doing exceptionally well.

Im looking forward to seeing Woodzy and Katie competing at the olympics and I will be backing them 100%. I just don't like the way it is being promoted in the UK.

As a country which doesn't have access to mountains and snowy conditions, along with the fact that only a small percentage of the population partake in winter sports, please excuse us and our team for being a little excited about having a few medal prospects which has rarely been the case in the winter olympics.

Well that's just media unfortunately. When you have people starting to do well, then when you have a slighty worse result the media get up in arms. I think you will find though leading up to the Olympics the media are going to be fully getting behind the team. This could be a big deal for the uk in winter sports. Don't worry about the odd negative article if anything it will just spurt the guys on to do better.

I am british..... don't get me wrong i'm fully stoked on how we have medal prospects.

But at the same time it's going to be like Alain Baxter all over again... or in fact any sport where we have someone good.

Never once said it was bad that we are excited. You misinterpreted my point.

You fucking kidding?

If you actually knew anything about skiing, you would know that Woodsy is ranked 1st in the fis slopestyle rankings.

If you knew anything about reading, you would know I didn't say he wasn't. I am quite aware about his fis ranking. I never mentioned it.

^ but you compared him to Alain Baxter who randomly got a result for a short time out of nowhere. We have never had any one in skiing who was going into the Olympics with very real medal hopes.

totally agree with this, considering our size and lack of any mountains it would unreal for a brit to get a medal. Also being a fridge kid is pretty much the only good thing bout skiing in the uk, the fact some people can use having no mountains to their advantage by getting sick in the park at domes is awesome
