Gay marrige ban vote

If you're not gay, does gay marriage really affect you?? Why SHOULDN'T it be legal? If 2 men get married, or two women, does it alter your day to day activities? will it really keep you awake at night? Marriage is something that binds two people together - if 2 heterosexuals get married, they are simply committing themselves to eachother. The same goes for two homosexuals. what the hell is the problem here? I honestly can't comprehend why people are so against it. If it doesn't affect your life (which it doesn't) it shouldn't concern you so much.

Ok, first, I support gay marriage, 100%. But I really dont agree with that^ arguement on this issue. Gay Marriage will affect America, as it will probably give gays a bit more power, socially and politically even to some extent. I think it's time for that power to be granted, so thats why I support gay marriage.

I dunno about that argument tho, that restricting gay marriage would be like restricting fat marriages, because in all but the most extreme cases, being fat is mostly your fault. Being gay isnt a decision or a lack thereof. You cant just decide to be truly gay, you're born that way.

I voted for the ban on same sex marriages. There is something I don't understand, however. Assuming homophilic attraction is the same as heterosexual attraction, why do homosexuals feel compelled to get married? If a heterosexual couple was denied the right to marry, would that then effect how the felt about each other? No.

Its not an issue of gay rights or allowing people to be gay, it is an issue of protecting an age old tradition. Somethings are meant to be kept old and traditional, and this is no different. People see gay marriage as undermining the covenant that they have made with their spouse by allowing something that they believe is wrong to be a part of it. They are not trying to take away rights of homosexuality, they are just trying to protect the idea of the traditional family, an idea that this society was founded upon. People believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, and thats what they have always believed, and its not changing anytime soon.

the very term 'age old tradition' implies the fact that the reason for keeping gay marriage illegal is religous. no one can force the church or other religous group to perform ceremonies in their 'age old tradition' if they do not want to, but the issue is a legal one. although seperation of chrurch and state is becoming increasingly theoretical, the government is supposed to be blind to the differences between people and protect the rights of minorities. putting this to a vote and letting the majority decide the fate of homosexuals is unjust because, unfortunately, public opinion right now is descriminatory as it once was towards other races as pointed out above

I think that the problem in america is that religion is running the country and not common sense. I mean as long as some gay guy doesnt want to marry me i dont give a shit if he gets married to his boyfriend or whatever. It's like saying should black people be allowed to get married. Im not black and i dont have a black gf but i dont care who gets married if they love each other. But really whats so good about marriage my parents have been together for 26 years and theyre not married ( theyre not gay either) and they have no intention of getting married. I'm still trying to understand how they are losing their rights. They are still allowed to be in relationships. Marriage is the bond between a man and a woman ... since the beginning of marriage itself. So people that want to spend the rest of their lives with a person of the same sex can find some sort of union other than marriage. People here are completely missing the point. By banning gay marriage, we are not banning homophilia. If so we'd have laws against it, like pedophilia. Besides, there are plenty of hetero couples who don't feel the need to get married.

Much more is intertwined within marriage other than loving someone. Property, visitation rights, etc etc. Lets say, hypothetically, that you're gay and have a gay boyfriend or whatever and live in a house, if your bf owns the house and dies, it doesnt go to you, it goes to the state, etc etc. Im not gay but I do know that I'm definately not going to vote for something that promotes discrimination, why legalize discrimination? Remeber when everyone thought that slavery was such a good idea, an idea that the founders of the country agreed with, George washington had slaves, doesnt mean that it's right or even acceptable. They are losing rights by not being treated equally. yes, some hetero couples don't get married, but they have a choice. if the ban is passed, than homosexuals will not have that choice. they are being denied the right to a legally binding contract concerning their relationship, and all of the benefits that go along with that.

If a church wants to deny a homosexual couple from being married, that's fine. I don't care if a religion wants to deny groups participation in their ceremonies. They are fully justified in doing so. But, as soon as government treatment of them changes, it is no longer justified.

The argument that homosexuality is a choice is also not well founded. Do you really choose what you are attracted to? No. When you see a something that is aestheticly unpleasing (for example a garbage can) can you change your mind and find that thing beautiful? Go try it. You can't.

Even though I believe that homosexualaty is not a choice, I can also understand why people deny it. If you are raised to believe that it is a sin to be a homosexual, then to deny that choice is going to fundamentaly change your beliefs. I accept that people are not going to change there beliefs. I can accept that they think it is choice, but I don't accept them using that as justification for denying social benifits to gays.

I find it ironic that people make comparisons between homosexual marriage and a person marrying a dog. The fact that you can even consider the two to be relevent toward eachother show's truely how lowly you think of homosexuals. That is cruelly disgusting.

One thing I don't understand is why do you think that homosexual marriage (the governemnt 'civil union', not the religious ceremony) is any different that heterosuxual marriages?

i was listening to a govener in the south talk after the election. he said 'i will not only make sure gays can't marry, but i will also keep them from being teachers.' it sounded familiar, very familiar. what occured to me was that the south is a hateful group. they NEED someone to hate and discrimate against. blacks, french and now homosexuals are discriminated against because they think they are superior. i really hate being part of a country with people like this.

That was Jim DeMint, SC senator elect. He does have some very conservative ideas regarding homosexuality and single mothers, more conservative then the electorate. I worked for his campaign some this year from the standpoint of gaining another senate vote, I don't agree with that attempt at banning gays from the classroom. However, I do agree that if they are in the classroom, that if they are teaching young children they really shouldn't tell the kids that they are gay, it would create too much confusion and get parents in an uproar. At an older age, past elementary education, they should be in the classroom, at that point the children are able to reason and make decisions for themselves. He is much more conservative then I am.
