Gasoline = Gone in 20 years

It's cool to see companies developing new sources for energy. On a business trip I visited Statoil, an oil company based in Norway. They told us that they have plans to use tidal energy. So basically they plan to put what would be a series of windmills in the ocean that uses the water current. How effective these 'tidalmills' would be, is a good question.

yea solar panels are definitely the most non-efficient way of doing things. I am definitely going to start riding a bike a lot, because when I was in europe people over there drive as little as they possibly can, and not just because the gas is about $4-5 a gallon, its because its not hard to walk or bike to somewhere thats within three miles if you think about it. we are so damn lazy here, like i usually drive to my friends house thats only about 6-12 blocks away or whatever. we drive way to damn much. i am gonna jog or bike everywhere now. plus i will get fit as shit n save money.

it's a bit more complicated then '20 years of oil and all cars will stop'. We will have oil for a longer time then that; the only thing that will change is the quantity we will have. The estimatedd peak of oil production will be within the first 5 tot 10 years. From then more advanced, work-intensive and therefore more expensive techniques will be needed to drill for more oil. (you can compare it to squeezing a spunge somemore, which costs more energy to do)

Nevertheless, quantities will lower, and prices will raise further and further on. My biggest worry in this matter is the following: will the world industry still have the funds and resources to switch their engine (which runs mostly on fuel) to another energy source? I fear it may be too late when we realize it.

 
they did an article on ocean powered turbines in either newsweek or popular science in the last month that was an interesting read. i don't remember which one though, i've read too many magazines lately to remember.

go buy the Honda Civic GX, it runs only off Natural-gas. still the same size as old civics, same hp (100hp), dame look and everything. only difference is it runs off natural gas. now that some killer shit now aint it?

yeah diesel is like 30 cents cheaper than normal gas... but what i think is that prices will get so high that no one will be able to afford buying gas, and we'll have a little bit left that will stay there forever.

diesel also gives of more nitrogen oxide emmissions due to their high compression ratios. Hydrogen is NOT a fuel in its own right, it is merely an energy storage medium, meaning it takes about as much energy to produce hydrogen as it releases when used. Currenty, all commercially produced hydrogen comes from natural gas, which does zilch to solve our problems. hydro is renewable, but still jacks up the environment, solar is expensive, wind is ugly and inconsistent, geothermal has potential but only certain places can do it. For consistent large scale power, I'd say nuclear is a nessessary evil for now, we could always bury the waste in Sweden.

gas prices here just hit 2.10. what the crap.

bush is probably getting filthy rich from these higher gas prices. same thing happened with peanut prices and jimmy carter.

last year i researched this new machine that can turn anything into oil and loads of other stuff. i found that you could put in cow poo and get a bunch of oil out of it by rearranging the structure of the atoms inside it. cool stuff.

solor panels are kinda like computers, each year there componets get smaller and smaller, and each year a solar panel can create more energy per square inch. With advancements in nano technolagy, solar panels may become so efficient that we'll be able to render Hydrogen without the use of fossil fuels and create electiristy for houses in sunny climates.

about the diesel thing. there are already diesel engines that run on some sort of vegtable oil. hydrogen cars cant happen because its just more steps to pollution as someone else in this post put it. But i think that a good deal of us should be using hybrid cars because its still as convienent as using a real car but it is much much more efficient. the big problem with every body is getting them to change (metric system). people dont want to have to change abruptly but if we can ween our selfs off of gas to hybrids and then to some other energy source, be it electricity or some other source that we will find in the future that would work. o shit i can believe i wrote that much.

theres oil off in the beaufort sea, in Canadian waters, the yanks are after it and claim its THIER property if ones borders were by magnetic north. some points:

- you have to do more than change power sources for cars... think power plants, planes, ships etc..

- the first person writing about population and food supplies was incompetent... the were in a global economy, if there is a famine in china or india, world food prices will go throuhg the roof.

- to the second person writing about food supplies and population and peak world population: were closer than you think to the peak i think. world water supplies, deep aquifer supplies (similar to oil) are not immediately replenishable, and are being quickly used up. farmers in china are drilling down 4000 feet for water. china is self sufficient as far as grain production goes right now and when there water dries up, so will their food. and when china runs out of its own food theyre going to look to the good ol breadbasket of the world, us. then we get some good ol supply and demand action, super high food prices, starving poor people around the world... problems. india isnt far behind china in this regard.

- to anyone who thinks there are no problems: get your head out of your ass, and think about the rest of the world instead of just your own interests. your self involved egoism is... well its disgusting. so fuck you.

This is the plan to save the planet from global worming/drilling in alaska/invading countries for oil:

The first thing is to start driving Diesel cars...many trucks are diesel and M_Benz & VW also have diesel cars...with simple modifications you can start running your car off vegtable oil(which you can get free from McDonalds) Buy a little bio-diesel(a true vegtable based diesel-no gasolleen/oil involved) used to get your car started.

This will take dependence off oil and will hopefully make gas companies to start producing it.

^true. the good thing about bio'oil (bit of a paradox but what the heck) is that it cycles C02 from plants to diesel to C02 to plants and so on. So it doesn't raise the C02 level more. If we wanted to produce oil for global needs tough, I think we need another planet to grow it on.

Don't think diesel is clean tough. It may produce less C02 than gas, it puts other toxins in the air like sulfur composed molecules and soot-compositions. I didn't know the right translations for that ;).

But in my humble opinion, I think your country could you use a serious upgrade in the bus and railsystem, am I right?

wind farms seem to be all the range in northern europe with Nation Wind Power or sumthing like that hoping to have 10% of northern europe powered by wind farms. and what better plave for em then in the ocean...

and if oil does follow a Hubberts Peak we should be screwed almost 2x as fast as the upscale of the bell graph becasue rising population and commerical needs put way more strain on the same amount of oil production in 2020 as in 1980 (just using 2000 as the peak of the graph for an example)
