Gas prices taking a toll

i ski at mt. hood and it costs about $25 dollars worth of gas everytime I go up x30+ times per year=shitload of money...whenever I take friends up I make them pay for part of the gas and they get all pissed which is stupid of them...I realize it could be worse though, like for those who live in california and have to drive to mammoth and tahoe

man your petrol is cheap as, in new zealand it costs $1.74 a litre! its tipped to $2 a litre by christmas, its liked 80-90 bucks a tank

Yeah heaps of forecasters seem to have reached a consensus that petrol will be upwards of AU$3.00/litre by 2010 - thats fucked.

Yeah, just drove to whistler and it cost 200 bucks to get here from salt lake city...

gotta make their money now before its all gone, thank god i have a car that gets food gas mileage

Yeah, experts here are predicting US$4.00/gallon by the end of the summer....It's ridiculous, but as society we still haven't learned to cut back. I mean, yeah your new hybrid helps, but it's not gonna reduce gas prices on its own. I'm not going to lie, I drive way too much, and it sucks.

I'm just glad I'm going away to college next year where I won't be able to drive.

the oil reserves are not anywhere near "gone" it's just that we've reached the peak of oil production, as oil productions decline, we feel the impact hard, it's not when we reach the bottom of the well that ruins us.

yeah gas is expensive... and people dont realize how much it costs to just go like 30 mins away. its been costing me around $12 to go to my home mountain but we usually go a couple times a week. I dont understand when people give me a hard time about splitting gas like your friends.

ah incorrect, American Oil peaked in the 70's and saudi oil has also already peaked.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubbert_curve

this is an accurate account of oil supplies. on a side note it was projected that the opening of ANWR (in ak) would push the curve forward TWO WEEKS.

while production will not run out so to speak, it will not longer be cost efficient to extract the remaining pockets that can be found. NO new reserviors have been found post 1970 such that can support the energy needs of the world.

Gas prices will continue to rise due to speculation, inflation, tensions, and draw downs. the solution? dont ask me, im going to continue paying until something changes, which it will have to, as economics dictates. this isnt some oil company monopoly blah blah the man etc coverup deal, its the way things are.

its unfortunate that in 30 years we will look back and say we saw this coming and wasted all that time not creating an answer when we had the time and werent facing a crisis we cant even imagine now.

Look I hate expensive fuel as well, but americans are the biggest complainers ever! What don't you idiots understand about simple economics, if the demand out weighs the supply, they can charge WHATEVER they want and will get it! We created this problem though the suburban sprawl and the resulting lack of any viable public transportation. We still have it cheaper than most of the world, so stop complaining especially when you are creating the problem!!! We should have learned through europe years ago that cheap oil is not a birth right!

the article still states that even with new technology we are doing nothing but pushing the curve. it also takes into account oil shales and other forms, which at this point are cost prohibitive to extract since oil shales require intense production and never mind take a huge environmental toll for extraction. you can look into what oil shales are yourself.

Also the guy who they consulted for this article works in the industry, and for a saudi company! there's no way to be impartial on either side of this topic, but there's no way the saudis will admit that they cant keep up and have passed their peak. The hubbert curve as i pointed out above is very accurate when it comes to these type of situations, although does feature drawbacks for anthropogenic influences, such as OPEC's limiting factor.

there have not been discoveries of new oil fields since the 70's that can support this trend.

were fuckin lucky here, i have uncles in england and its costs 2000 dollars just to fill up like a range rover.
why does everyone complain, although i shouldnt be talking i cant drive yet

yea i just paid fuckin $3.41 in saratoga ny. it costs me fuckin $40 to fill the tank in my badass chevy cavalier when its a little bit less than 1/4 filled. wtf. and with me living in toga the race track helps gas stations price gouge. the predictions for toga have the price of one gallon of gas passing the $4 mark this summer. fucking bullshit. i might just move to canada or something and ride a bike everywhere

$3.67 out in seattle, washington today. bitchy fuckers. good thing my motorcycle gets like 50+ miles to gallon and only holds 3.5 gallons haha woohoo

this coming from the oppinions of largest oil corporation in the world...

sure there may be plenty of other deposits of oil, but where are they, perhaps there is 10 - 15 trillion extra barels of oil, i'll grant you this, but where is this oil going to be? Easily accesable? not likely...

so Saudi Aramco says we should invest in the tecnology to tap these resources to starve off peak oil untill 2060... i'm pretty sure thats still within my expected life time. I think it's misleading to say that peak oil isn't a big deal and that we shouldn't concern ourselves with this, because it's not a problem-- It is.

IMO our efforts would be better directed at developing solar energy, but what are the the chances that Saudi Aramco is going to agree with me there?

i meant before the majority of the world switches off of fossil fuels, but yes i am aware that we're not even close to being out of oils and that it can also be extracted from coal and so on and so forth

there's speculation that there is a shit ton of oil below the northern ice caps, so the oil companies are hoping it will melt so they can drill there

as if the ice caps melting won't have any effect on the rest of the world...

seriously, this might be a case of psychotic delusion

drill in anwar(ha ha i know i didnt spell that right) seriously though, we need to do more drilling and build more infrastructure here in the US (not ethonel)

o yeah gas is around 3.14$ a gallon here

hydrogen fuel cells, they have the technology to do it it just isn't quite cost efficient enough. it's a shame the oil companies have such an influence in politics that these things aren't being looked into enough

and the gas prices are high because all people do is complain like bitches and then get into their 5 mile per gallon SUV last year oil companies made record profits because we will pay whatever gas costs

ya i have a buddy that has never payed me for gas going anywhere and we ski around 80-90 times in a season with around an average of 20$ per time. And he always bitchs that he has no money when he is just mooching off me to fuck.

here at some places it's 1.25/litre.. and it cost my mom $75 to fill up the tank.

I'm so glad I don't drive, and instead bus or bike everywhere/hitchhike to the mountain.

Hmm every American, which i am, that read this must not know how much a litre is, cuz uhh if they did they would be quoting you. So yeah ill just convert that for you... Thats 12.00 a GALLON! 4 litres=roughly 1 gallon.

I hate living in the mtns. Its like 30-50 cents cheaper down in reno compared to tahoe, haha.

I wish i could go hybrid... too bad i got lots of shit to tow around, including sleds. so it costs about 70 bucks to fill up my 4runner (but i can make it from reno to bend on one tank if i drive right)

mean while any given day in europe you pay $2/L ....

As far as I see it gas prices will continue to rise until people acctually consider it benficial to bus but people are often to stuck up to take a bus ride. But lets face it, if more and more and more people took the bus everyday and less people drove they would have to lower prices because they wouldn't have customers. So if everyone just stopped taking cars then they would know they couldnt raise the price more.

Thats my theory.

One difference in America though is that we rely alot more on our cars than other countries. We are very spread out, and have very poor public transportation systems. When I was in Japan in like '04, gas was $1.98 per Litre, way expensive, but their transportation systems are so good that you can get anywhere around the country at a reasonable price and you don't have to drive.

Hah the states has the lowest gas prices anywhere. You guys are rocking suuuuuuper cheap gas. Its $1.23/litre in Montreal right now and there's no way its going to go down.

Gas needs to be more expensive, then we'll finally think about how much of it we're using. People who drive massive pickups and have big sleds are the worst polluters of us all... and its relaly too bad becuase thats much of the top end skiers in our sport.

Expensive gas will at least make everyone think twice about buring more and more and more of it.

people with trucks or vans etc. that have a purpose for it don't bother me, its the people who have it for no other reason than "its a truck" that get under my skin

Ya I know a bunch of people like that. Or like when you see a kid driving a truck that's been raised up and is on huge tires, and they only do it cause they think they are a bamf. I grew up in a town with a bunch of rednecks so you see it all the time, they all think they are badasses cause they drive their trucks and never actually use them.
