A hill by me recently made a new policy that anyone seen going off the side of rails (gapers) got a warning, and if they did it again got their lift ticket taken away. Personally I think this is super necessary and think more places should use it but some of my buddies disagree. What do you guys think
 
Sure its annoying as hell but they have paid for a lift ticket just like yours. Youre both equal
 
I'm kind of on the fence on this one.

On one hand, that is the way some gapers start learning / get exposure to freestyle stuff.

On the other hand, it is annoying and can be dangerous if they are snaking people which is often the case.

I have noticed at some of the bigger mountains I ride (Keystone, Copper) side jumping isn't too much (still happens) of an issue, I think partially because all the gapers head to the smaller parks and stay out of the larger ones (A-51 and Central Park, respectively).

However, some other places (generally smaller mountains) don't have the option of "hiding" the entrances to their main parks (or don't have separate large parks) and it gets sketchy with gapers running rampant.

I guess I would say that policy should apply to larger parks with medium to advanced features and not apply to smaller entry level parks. But I don't know where that leaves mountains that don't have the luxury of separate parks.

If they bought day passes like most gapers then they are paying way more. I talked to a lady the other day that paid over $100 a head for her whole family to come up for the day. Add in fuel and food and she easily paid over $600 for her family to ski for just one day.
 
What if you were filming for the 50/50 straight air challenge? What if you're building your building up the courage to actually hit the rail, but keep psyching yourself out?

Tru though, what if you're going for a rail then dont have enough speed so just go off to the side last minute

Another one would be going for a new trick and you bitch out last second it happens. I would flip the fuck out if someone tried to take my pass cause I didn't commit to a 2 or something.

I always liked the idea of the extra 10 bucks on a day pass for the park pass and you have to watch a park etiquette video, then if you fuck up you get your ticket pulled. Its harder to implement because you'd need a scanner or a park guy at the top of the parks but still would work.
 
I get annoyed with it too, but are they really fucking bothering you that much? Get your shit straigh, most times, they do not snake you. When they do snake you that is dangerous and obnoxious so I can understand the frustration there. But really? Someone jumping off the side, does that really impact you that much? As long as they aren't getting in your way then it shouldn't matter. I know it packs down the lip, but so do you when you hit the feature. Thats why you have park crews who are supposed to maintain the lips. Really, it is not a big deal. Chill out, have some fucking fun and stop worrying about what other people are doing.

As for the policy, that's fucking stupid and I highly doubt that is actually a thing.
 
Are we going to start segregating hills by skill level?

If gapers check their blindspots before going off the lips, that's completely fine by me. If they are reckless, get them out of there. Skiing is expensive, it doesn't need more rules.

Totally agree Mingg, but I'm guessing it also has to do with the park crew not wanting to rebuild the lift every morning
 
The way I see it:

>Gapers can't side jump

>They now see the park as less entertaining

>They stay out of the park

>Less collisions, snaking, etc.

>Park crew gets to spend less time reshaping

But I don't think the rule should be enforced in low level parks

I work park crew and we do have people at the top at all times, (well Atleast the weekends even just talking to people who are newer to the park scene goes along ways

Would like to clarify that if they're kids that are actually getting ready to hit rails and are in the learning process obviously they wouldn't take lift tickets, this is for the kids who fly through just to jump off the sides and snake the hell out of people

Yes I figure we all thought that, but I am learning how to hit down rails and I chicken out quite a bit right before I hit it. I feel like it would be hard to decide whether or not if I'm just jumping off the lip for fun or not because

That's just what it looks like. In my opinion, stupid rule.
 
Yea I never really understood why people get so upset about going off the side of rails. I guess if enough people do it it messes up the approach a bit but besides that who cares?

I'm with you.

1. You were once a little kid that wanted to "catch air" off every bump and lip.

2. Every skier that enters the park is another skier exposed to free-skiing and its brands.

3. You are always 100% responsible for your own safety. Never rely on the competency of other skiers to keep you safe. Be aware of your surroundings always.
